We Came Up With Bizarre Descriptions of DJs—Then Used Artificial Intelligence to Bring Them to Life

There’s nothing that blurs the line between frightening and fascinating quite like artificial intelligence. And since artificial intelligence and electronic music are becoming more symbiotic by the day, the staff here at EDM.com wanted to see just how far it could go in a visual sense. So we came up with bizarre descriptions of artists and fed them through A.I. art generators. Some images are photorealistic. Others are fancifully distorted. And the majority of them are flat-out creepy. But we digress. Read on to see our weird and wonderful creations. How a Long-Running Daft Punk Prank at Burning Man Found New Life With RÜFÜS DU SOL

The long-running “Daft Punk at the Trash Fence” prank at Burning Man has mutated into something entirely different. At this year’s event, thousands flocked to a location in Black Rock City—a camp called “Dusty Throwdown”—after reading an advertisement submitted to the Rockstar Librarian Music Guide. The ad promoted performances from RÜFÜS DU SOL, Kerala Dust and an unheralded musical act called Persephone, who were said to be playing on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. But they found no camp under that name—and none of the artists. It was a hoax. Kerala Dust had heard about the fake ad in advance and tried to dispel the rumors over social media, but it was too late. Kerala Dust/Facebook Perhaps the Librarian herself—who publishes the guid...

Watch This Guy Turn a Vintage Phone Into a MIDI Controller and Play Daft Punk’s “Around The World”

Creative Daft Punk fans have used calculators and even Tesla coils to preserve the robots’ legacy in the wake of their split. But this one just may take the cake. James “poprhythm” Kolpack has repurposed an old phone and, through the use of an Arduino Diecimila device, turned it into a MIDI controller and vocoder to play Daft Punk’s classic, “Around The World.” “This project takes a vintage touch phone and converts it into a musical instrument, or more specifically, a MIDI controller using the push-buttons to generate the signals for musical notes,” Kolpack writes. Look Inside a Space Opera Dance Party Inspired By Daft Punk at LA’s Biggest VR Dome

Daft Punk may be no more, but a new experience in L.A. won’t let the legacy of the robots fade anytime soon. We recently attended a Daft Punk-inspired concert experience called “CONTACT,” an immersive show that marries a “multi-sensory dance party” with a space opera. The 360° show went down at Wisdome, the largest virtual reality dome in the City of Angels. An evolving roster of DJs and multidisciplinary performers appeared throughout the night, donning realistic versions of Daft Punk’s iconic helmets and suits. They performed atop a 3D LED cubed stage, which pulsed with kaleidoscopic colors as they rinsed hits from the duo’s discography. There’s a 360° Daft Punk-Inspired Show Coming to Los Angeles’ Largest VR Dome

In virtual reality, anything is possible—even a live performance from electronic music’s most legendary robot duo. Sadly, fans around the world were robbed of the opportunity to ever experience Random Access Memories in a live setting given Daft Punk‘s shocking breakup in 2021. However, in Los Angeles’ Wisdome, a sprawling, 12,000-square foot VR venue, there’s an opportunity to experience what alternatively could have been if history played out differently. “CONTACT” is a special Daft Punk tribute unlike any other. The show marks an opportunity to experience a unique performance played within a 3D LED cube stage, similar to the iconic pyramid the duo famously played in during their Alive 2007 tour. The 360° show is complete with immersive visua...

Daft Punk’s Former Creative Director Partners With Hegid to Design “Retro-Futuristic” Watch

You’ll feel like a real “Starboy” by wearing the new timepiece from Hegid and Hervet Manufacturier. The two companies, the latter of which was co-founded by Daft Punk‘s former artistic director Cédric Hervet alongside his cousin Nicolas, have partnered to create a “retro-futuristic” watch with an aesthetic akin to the legendary robots’ helmets. Jérôme Coste, the artistic director for Hegid, a French watchmaking studio, called upon the Hervets to design the spacetime-inspired “Celeste” timepiece. With a frame designed to replicate a “radar dial,” the watch, Hegid says, was “made to match inter-galactic explorers’ helmets and gloves in style.” “Celeste is a mysterious, geometric and uncompromising ...

SG Lewis’ New Double-Single Was Inspired By Daft Punk’s “Discovery”: Listen

Disco darling SG Lewis has returned with the music industry’s equivalent of a double feature: a banging double A-side single. Marking his debut on dance music industry heavyweight Astralwerks, “Missing You” and “Something About Your Love” are out now. According to Lewis, the two tracks are an ode to 70s and 80s club music, evolving the disco themes of his debut album, times, into the next era of dancefloor movers and shakers. The resulting effect is comforting and nostalgic yet stirringly emphatic, composed of gilded synthwave melodies and glistening sound design. And by acting as each others’ tonal foils, they together capture the ethos of a modern Molly Ringwald, dancing the end of a movie away under a disco ball at prom.  Then there are the ...

Watch a Ballet Scene With Music By Thomas Bangalter, His First Post-Daft Punk Project

Fans of Daft Punk can now listen to new music composed by Thomas Bangalter, whose first project following the robots’ split, a French ballet, has wrapped up its debut run. The legendary Daft Punk member signed on to write the music for “Mythologies,” which dropped the curtain at the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux on July 1st before concluding its first cycle on the 10th. The program is now slated for a 37-date national tour. Bangalter’s score is not available to stream but you can watch footage, obtained by Euronews, containing a track from “Mythologies.” The symphonic number features eerie, rhythmic strings and gliding glissandos, recalling the orchestral work found in Daft Punk’s 2013 single “Giorgio by Moroder.” Shades of ambient electron...
