John Cena’s The Suicide Squad Character Peacemaker Gets HBO Max Spinoff
Before the character even makes his big screen debut, John Cena’s Peacemaker from The Suicide Side has been given a TV spinoff. Deadline reports that HBO Max has picked up Peacemaker for an eight-episode, straight-to-series order. Cena will reprise his role, while The Suicide Squad writer-director James Gunn will also make the streaming transition. He’ll write the series and direct a number of episodes, as well as executive produce alongside fellow The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran. Cena will co-executive produce. When Warner Bros. finally agreed to let Zack Snyder finish his director’s cut of Justice League, they were pretty clear that there would be no reshoots. After all, they were dumping some $30 million into the project just for re-editing and special effects work alone. However, it now seems the studio has reversed course, as The Hollywood Reporter has it that a “week- or so- long” shoot to capture new footage is set to take place next month. James Gunn has shared the first teaser trailer for The Suicide Squad and revealed new characters from the star-studded cast. The unveiling took place during DC’s virtual FanDome on Saturday. Gunn himself hosted a panel, and with a bit of pomp and ceremony he announced the villainous roles played by previously-announced actors. The big news is that Idris Elba will be inhabiting Bloodsport, a Lex Luthor associate. During a Q&A/trivia section, it was also revealed that Bloodsport in the film is spending time in jail for shooting Superman. This is the biggest plot drop from the panel, and it’s actually pulled right from the comic books. The Batman Spin-Off TV Series Coming to HBO Max from Matt Reeves
It’s long been known that the forthcoming Batman film starring Robert Pattinson is intended to launch a new trilogy. But it turns out there’s even more story to tell, as director Matt Reeves has signed on to bring a spin-off TV series to HBO Max. The streaming service today announced it has given a series commitment to the project from Reeves, The Batman producer Dylan Clark, and Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter. The police procedural will be set in the universe Reeves and Pattinson establish in the upcoming film. At this point, I’d be cautious to take news coming out about any cinematic Superman with a grain of salt, but here’s the latest: Henry Cavill is reportedly in talks to reprise his role as the Man of Steel in future DC Extended Universe films. Deadline broke the story, noting that “sources with knowledge” of the situation say Warner Bros. is trying to bring Cavill back for multiple DC movies. However, one of those is not a standalone sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel. Instead, Cavill’s Superman would appear in supporting or cameo roles in other characters’ movies, with many comparing the arrangement to something like Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
