It’s a quiet November night when Kai Wachi makes the second-to-last stop of his “Muscleville” tour in the City of Brotherly Love. Thanksgiving weekend sends Philadelphians home to the burbs for a tryptophan coma, the Eagles game enjoyed from sunken couches through half-shut eyes. One might expect this show to be a sleeper, but there’s a ghostly air blowing off the Delaware that says a storm is coming. The venue teems with headbangers as the Boise-born bass music producer takes the stage. Herein lies the intersection of wook and meathead. A pashmina-clad crowd sings, “electrify every cell, ‘cause I don’t wanna flatline” while visuals of skulls and flowers pulse from psychedelic swirls. Wachi’s signature, vicious blend of dubstep and metal drives the life-death motif unfolding. A...

Once again, longstoryshort has delivered a high-powered EP, this time around arriving on Dr. Fresch’s House Call Records imprint. longstoryshort’s two-track Love We Had EP is dark and contemplative, and chock full of spellbinding sound design. The EP gives listeners a fresh dose of what’s quickly becoming his signature sound, as he’s expertly implemented brooding vocal samples alongside organic percussion and menacing bass. The namesake tune “Love We Had” is more subdued than its counterpart. The airy, slow-building intro is transformed into a rumbling drop as the percussion makes its way in, taking listeners by surprise early on. “To Ya Headtop” brings even more energy right from the start, kicking things off with punchy...

Electronic music listeners tend to become enamored with the genre at an early age, according to the results of a recent EDM.com reader poll. The fact that the blissfully care-free lifestyle promoted by electronic dance music culture appeals vastly to youthful demographics isn’t necessarily a surprising discovery, but the weighting by percentage skews more youthful than perhaps one would expect. Precisely half of respondents reported first beginning their EDM journey between the ages of 0-15. This would suggest that listeners at the high end of this segment were born around 2007, a time when dance music was just on the cusp of booming in the U.S. during the late 2000s and early 2010s. Our latest EDM.com poll found 85% of dance music fans began listening before th...
