Eric Cantona or Bruno Fernandes – who had the best first season at Man Utd?

Manchester United have a rich history in the Premier League (yes we are restricting this discussion to the Premier League era) with many high-profile signings that lit up the league in all positions on the pitch. However, which signing had the best first season at the club? The signing must have had a substantial first-team role at the club, so despite Anderson’s penalty in the Champions League final, he doesn’t make the list. Let’s see the outstanding transfers: Eric Cantona – 92/93 The original title-winning signing – Cantona signed in November and led United to their first title win in 26 years by the end of the season. United only lost twice in the league after Cantona’s arrival, and finished the season 10 points clear at the top of the table. Roy Keane – 93/94 Signed in the summer of ...

Aston Villa star in awe of what Spurs star did in the Europa League last night

Tottenham Hotspur secured a 4-1 victory over Austrian Bundesliga side Wolfsberger in the first-leg of the Europa League last-32 yesterday, with Heung-Min Son, Gareth Bale, Lucas Moura and Carlos Vinicius all getting on the scoresheet. It was a straightforward victory for Spurs, and the duo of Dele Alli and Bale provided a timely reminder of their quality. The Real Madrid loanee assisted Son’s opener before scoring a fine goal following a lovely piece of skill, and he might have played his way into Tottenham’s starting XI for Sunday’s trip to West Ham United after his impressive performance. Alli returned to Spurs starting line-up for the first time in over 80 days against Wolfsberger, and while he had no hand in goal, the midfielder was splendid for the whole 78 minutes he spent on the pit...

Thomas Tuchel confirms double Chelsea injury boost ahead of Southampton clash

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has provided an injury update ahead of the Premier League game against Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday. The west London side have been in fine form since Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as manager last month, winning their last four league games. They are favourites to win this weekend with Southampton on a six-match losing league streak. Ahead of the game, Tuchel confirmed that both Tammy Abraham and Kai Havertz are in contention to face the Saints. Abraham picked up an ankle injury which saw him substituted in the 20th minute against Newcastle United on Monday. He has avoided any serious problem and looks set for a return alongside Havertz, who has been out with a knock over the past fortnight. “Tammy feels very good,” Tuchel told the club’s official website...

Jamie Carragher says Liverpool need to bring in a goalscorer

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports’ Super 6 podcast (via Liverpool Echo) that the club needs to sign a goalscorer. The Reds’ title defence seems over given how they’ve fared over the past couple of months, winning only two of their last ten Premier League matches. They are currently sixth in the standings with 40 points. Carragher says that the Reds need a proper goalscorer to lessen the scoring pressure on the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. He said: “Liverpool definitely need to bring a goalscorer in. I don’t know exactly what position for, whether that’s a centre-forward or a midfielder. “At the moment they are massively reliant on Salah and Mane – nobody else looks like they’re going to score. Jota has been a miss, but whether Jota would eve...

‘Sign Sturridge as a free agent’ – NUFC journalist comments on striker links

Newcastle United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge on a free transfer, With Callum Wilson set to miss the next eight weeks to injury, there is no denying that the Magpies could do with another proven goalscorer right now. While the former England international can be snapped up anytime given his status as a free agent, he will not be able to play for Newcastle this term and The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has poured cold water on the links. “DeAndre Yedlin may have been sold, but his place in the 25-man Premier League squad was taken by Christian Atsu,” the journalist said. “They could, in theory, sign Sturridge as a free agent, but it would appear pointless as he could not play. “The Premier League does, on rare occasions, permit special ...

Predicted Spurs starting XI: Mourinho to make seven changes; 23-year-old to start

Tottenham Hotspur travel to Budapest to face Wolfsberger in the Europa League round of 32, and Jose Mourinho is expected to make a raft of changes to the side. The Austrian outfit currently sit sixth in the Austrian Bundesliga, nine points behind third-placed LASK who were beaten by Spurs in the group stage. The game will be hosted in the neutral Puskás Arena, home of the Hungary national team, as COVID-19 regulations in Austria mean Spurs won’t be playing at the Worthersee Stadion in Klagenfurt. Spurs are going through a wretched run of form at the moment, having won just once in their last six games in all competitions. They are heading into this game on the back of a 3-0 defeat against Manchester City, and desperately need a win to get their season back on track. Sergio Reguilon, S...
