Sidney Miller, Pioneering ‘Black Radio Exclusive’ Publisher, Dies at 89
Sidney Miller, founder and publisher of Black Radio Exclusive (BRE) — one of the industry’s first Black music trade magazines — died Thursday in Arlington, Virginia, following a long illness. He was 89. Miller invested his savings and sold his house and car to pursue his dream of establishing a publication specifically targeting the Black music market. Launched in 1976, BRE became a pivotal force in underscoring the importance of Black radio and promoting the cultural and commercial impact of Black artists and Black music in the contemporary music arena. Pedro the Lion have surprise released a new album titled Havasu. It’s the band’s first studio LP in three years and is currently available through Polyvinyl. Check it out below. Havasu spans 10 tracks in total. Like Phoenix, the band’s 2019 album and first in 15 years, Havasu once again finds singer/guitarist David Bazan revisiting former hometowns in which he’s lived and their influences on his life. This time, he traveled to the namesake city in Arizona to revisit the sites—junior high campus, a skating rink, the lake—that populate his memories from seventh grade. Taylor Swift will be Record Store Day’s first global ambassador, taking the figurehead position for 2022 after astronomical vinyl sales of her recent albums. “The places where we go to browse and explore and discover music new and old have always been sacred to me,” Swift said in a press release. “Record stores are so important because they help to perpetuate and foster music-loving as a passion.” She will announce a special RSD 2022 release in the coming weeks. Fugees are canceling their reunion tour due to the pandemic. “The continued Covid pandemic has made touring conditions difficult, and we want to make sure we keep our fans and ourselves healthy and safe,” the trio explained. “An idea sparked to honor and celebrate this 25th anniversary of The Score but we see now it may not currently be our time for revisiting this past work.” Find the band’s full statement below.
