By 1987, Belinda Carlisle had become a chart mainstay. Five years earlier, she and her Los Angeles pop-punk band The Go-Go’s became the first all-female group to top the Billboard 200 when their debut album, Beauty and the Beat, spent six weeks at No. 1 in 1982. The same year, the quintet followed with the top 10 LP Vacation and, in 1984, the top 20 Talk Show. They also scored five top 40 Billboard Hot 100 hits, including “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “We Got the Beat.” The Go-Go’s went on hiatus after Talk Show, but Carlisle didn’t slow down. Her 1986 debut solo LP, Belinda, reached No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and spawned a No. 3 Hot 100 hit, “Mad About You.” It wasn’t until the end of the following year that Carlisle, then 29, made her first solo trip to the top of the Hot 100 with “Heaven I...

A$AP Rocky has shared a music video for his new single “Shittin’ Me,” which dropped via A$AP Worldwide, Polo Grounds Music and RCA Records on Friday. Directed by Grin Machine, the visual opens with a hazy panoramic scan of what looks like to the aftermath of a night out before cutting to Rocky in the boardroom. After bossing around his employees while using one as a footstool, he links up with his friends to play video games and count his hard-earned money. It also features Rocky’s real-life custom replica of the Mercedes-Benz 190E from Need for Speed Unbound. The title tapped AWGE last month to lead a campaign that enabled players to compete with Rocky in-game for a chance to win the virtual car. “Grin Machine did a great job paying homage to the game collaboration with AWGE with the fun ...
Metro Boomin is following up on the release of Friday’s HEROES & VILLAINS with an instrumental edition of the album. The “Heroes Version” of the LP features all of its original songs alongside stripped-down iterations that truly allow Young Metro’s studio skills to shine through. While it’s unlikely listeners will be choosing to bump the instrumental version over the star-studded original — which packs in guest appearances from Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky, Future and Gunna, among others — the “Heroes” edition makes for an interesting exercise in giving Metro’s production choices a close listen. It can also function as a foundation for rapper and producers to freestyle over or sample in their own singles. The sophomore effort from Metro arrived four years after its debut solo LP, NOT ALL H...
This past weekend, SZA stopped by Saturday Night Live (SNL) to perform “Shirt” and a new track “Blind” from her forthcoming sophomore album. The latest episode was hosted by Keke Palmer, making for an all-around exciting episode. Kicking off her musical performance was her upbeat track “Shirt,” which was previously released on October 28. Dressed in a casual Harley Davidson tee and baggy pants, SZA cascaded across the song against two backup dancers and blue-toned light effects. Following “Shirt,” SZA slowed things down to debut her song “Blind,” which was initially teased at the end of the “Shirt” music video. Dressed in an oversized button-down shirt, a loose tie and a blue and gold “S” hat, the contemplative and melodic created a calm atmosphere. Aside from the band, the surrounding vis...

Each offers a different perspective on turning an artist’s vision into reality, and having the creative director will make all the difference.
