Before hip-hop became a global cultural phenomenon, the genre emerged at a 1973 block party in the South Bronx. DJ Kool Herc had organized the party for members of his apartment building, word of the event spread borough-wide and it quickly set the precedent for a recurring community gathering. DJs would set up turntables right on the pavement, using two copies of the same record to mix, layer and scratch beats. Over these funk and soul-inspired sounds, spectators laid down cardboard for dancing and the DJs shouted out to engage the crowd, a routine that became known as MCing. In the ensuing few years, MCs placed greater emphasis on rhyme and rhythm, and by the late 1980s, hip-hop had entered its golden era, led by a vanguard of rapper-tastemakers such as LL Cool J, Slick Rick and Biz Mark...

Soccer Mommy has shared a medieval-style video for “Feel It All the Time.” Check it out below. The Zev Magasis–directed video intersperses scenes of Soccer Mommy’s Sophie Allison driving around the suburbs with shots of her riding a horse and wielding a sword she finds among nicknacks in a storage room. In the press release, Allison said, “‘Feel It All The Time’ is a song that felt really easy and honest for me as soon as I wrote it. It uses this idea of an old truck to kind of compare this feeling of aging too fast. There are also these glimpses of light and freedom, from something as simple as the wind in your hair, that can make you feel alive.” Produced by Oneohtrix Point Never’s Daniel Lopatin, “Feel It All the Time” appears on Soccer Mommy’s Sometimes, Forever, which came out in June...

For the past few years, Animal Collective’s Geologist (aka Brian Weitz) has hosted a monthly show on NTS Radio called The O’Brien System. The freeform radio show features an eclectic assortment of experimental music about which Weitz is excited, and, for the latest episode, he teamed up with his bandmate Avey Tare (aka Dave Portner) to revisit their love for one particular band: Pavement. Weitz, Portner, and their bandmates notably formed Animal Collective as high school students in Baltimore, and, during the same period, they apparently bonded over a shared interest in cassette bootlegs of Pavement live shows. As Animal Collective shared on Instagram, “What do 15-year-old Dead fans do after hearing ‘Fight This Generation’ live in 1994? They start collecting Pavement tapes!” They continued...
Jenny Hval’s latest album Classic Objects was released in March, and, now, the Norwegian vocalist and composer is back with a new song called “Buffy.” Like its title might suggest, the track was inspired by the television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Take a listen below. “Somehow I improvised some lyrics that referred to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, probably just because I have watched it many times,” Hval explained. “I do like the idea that a TV series with many episodes, like Buffy, can be used as a creative and political rehearsal. An episodic form rehearsing overthrowing a dictatorship, a plutocracy, or theocracy?” “‘Buffy’ is not a song about a slayer, a superhero, or feminist icon,” she continued. “If anything, it’s a song about hope, but in an understated and episodic way. Because to...
Kendrick Lamar has unveiled a music video for his Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers single, “Rich Spirit.” The visual opens with Lamar, who wears an all-red outfit, staring longingly through a glass window, the majority of which is covered by a heavy curtain. The rapper quickly turns away from the crack of light to kneel on the edge of his bed in prayer. As the video progresses, Lamar dives into an awkward routine of jerky, dramatic movement, a recurring concept across his ‘Mr. Morale’ music videos and live performances. In a later dance sequence, his discomfort is palpable as he’s forced to watch himself move in a room of mirrors. “The morality can wait / Feedback on low latency,” he raps in one verse. “I’m glitching from the face as my thoughts grow sacredly.” The highly-antici...
