Less than two months following the release of his new album JAMIE, Montell Fish has returned with a new single. “Hotel” takes the singer’s unique gospel-infused style and directs it towards a darker subject matter: the vexation one grapples with in the aftermath of a relationship ending, after the initial pain begins to subside. “’Hotel’ is meant to represent the beginning of the next chapter after JAMIE, a kind of post-break-up anger,” Fish said. “Instead of soft, ambient guitars, I wanted to contrast it with dark heavy bass and a more rock guitar solo towards the end.” While Fish broke onto the scene in 2016 with EPs of Christian ballads recorded and produced from his own bedroom, JAMIE marked a reinvention for the young artist. As his first album, JAMIE sees a lovesick Fish eulogize the...
Rina Sawayama has come a long way since her eponymous 2020 debut. The nostalgic Y2K-inspired SAWAYAMA saw the British artist take on an eccentric and glamorous persona, threaded with vulnerable anecdotes about conflicts between herself and her family or friends. On her sophomore endeavor, out for steaming today, Sawayama has turned the lens entirely on herself, taking a poetic and layered approach to dissecting her own trauma and memories. In an interview with Pitchfork, the singer shared that she wrote all of the songs on the LP in just two months. Entitled Hold the Girl, the project takes its name from a term the singer invented in therapy to describe tending to her inner child. “Oftentimes when I’ve failed, I haven’t felt love from my family, and that’s been the big struggle,” Sawayama ...
Since releasing their debut single, “Escape,” earlier this year, Kaskade and deadmau5 have kept fans on the edge of their seats as Kx5. Today the duo continued to reveal more about the direction of their joint venture by way of “Take Me High,” a stunning house record they teased during their EDC Las Vegas 2022 performance, Kx5’s first headlining set. “Take Me High” feels like a natural escalation of “Escape.” While the new track is more uptempo and club-focused, its haunting vocals, tense builds and dramatic crescendos are signatures of deadmau5 and Kaskade, who have perhaps signaled a stylistic trend for their collaborative nom de plume. A grand piano transformed into a cavernous grand hall; a clarinet reimagined as a majestically bottomless tunnel—with individual names like “The Cello Once Hit By a Train” and “The Exquisite Architecture of Steinway,” a new series of photographs by Charles Brooks turns the oft-overlooked interiors of instruments into majestic works of art. And it’s not just classic instruments that the New Zealand photographer highlights in “Architecture in Music.” Others include an Australian didgeridoo hollowed out by termites, a 1780-era cello (which, yes, was once hit by a train) and a wooden flute crafted out of local New Zealand timber.
