Nicki Minaj is opening this week’s Billboard Hot 100 at No. 1 with “Super Freaky Girl.” The artist’s latest single earned a total of 21.1 million streams, 4.6 million radio airplay audience impressions and 89,000 downloads sold in its first week. This marks her first ever solo No. 1 hit and her third overall, following 2020’s “Trollz” with 6ix9ine and Doja Cat’s “Say So.” The track is also the first time in since Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” in 1998 that a hip-hop song by a solo female artist debuted at No. 1. In addition, “Super Freaky Girl” sits at No. 1 on both the Streaming Songs, Digital Song Sales, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts. Minaj recently enlisted her alter ego Roman for a remix of the Rick James-sampled cut, which is a minute longer than the origina...
Capitol Music Group has announced that it has “severed ties” with virtual rapper FN Meka, who recently received criticisms for using the N-word in its song and perpetuating Black stereotypes despite the creative team not having any Black members. Variety reports that the label had just signed FN Meka just under two weeks ago but has since apologized to the Black community, with the statement reading, “CMG has severed ties with the FN Meka project, effective immediately. We offer our deepest apologies to the Black community for our insensitivity in signing this project without asking enough questions about equity and the creative process behind it. We thank those who have reached out to us with constructive feedback in the past couple of days — your input was invaluable as we came to the de...
Despite appearances, there’s seemingly more to an intergalactic black hole than meets the eye. In fact, while most space objects and travelers are seen but never heard, black holes are proving to be an anomaly. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the sound a black hole produces is unsettling to say the least. NASA took to Twitter to share that there’s some common misconceptions around the idea of sound’s lack of existence in space. The agency noted that generally speaking, there’s no means by which sound waves can travel as most of space exists as a vacuum. However, despite looking like an empty void, black holes are actually quite the opposite. In actuality, a black hole is composed of densely compacted space matter, so much so that there’s enough gas present for t...

One unforeseen part of the “Rhythm Nation”? The classic Janet Jackson music video has been proven to crash certain older laptops, says Microsoft’s chief software engineer Raymond Chen in a company blog post. It’s all because of a specific frequency featured in “Rhythm Nation” that interferes with laptop hard drives that spin at 5400 rpm. Explore Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news Released in 1989, the computer-offending song was the titular anthem of Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814. The album was one of the most commercially successful of its day, producing seven top five singles on the Billboard Hot 100 — which continues to be a record for the pop sensation. But don’t throw Jackson’s classic hit off your playlists just yet: Manufacturers who made th...
Comedian George Lopez has joined the chorus of comedians suing Pandora over its failure to pay royalties on spoken-word compositions, according to documents filed in California federal court on Tuesday (Aug. 23). In the copyright infringement suit, filed by attorney Richard Busch of King & Ballow, Lopez accuses Pandora of failing to obtain either public performance or mechanical reproduction licenses for – or pay royalties on – the spoken-word compositions for 37 works contained on his albums Right Now Right Now and Team Leader. “The end result is Pandora took the Works, gained listeners, subscribers and market share with full knowledge it did not have licenses and made no royalty payments for the Works,” the complaint reads. Lopez further alleges that Pandora exploited the works witho...
In a bizarre quirk of computer technology, Janet Jackson’s classic “Rhythm Nation” video was once found to crash certain laptops, even if the sound was playing from another source. The video derives its lethal force from a frequency (that is, roughly speaking, the speed of an audio vibration) that aligns perilously closely with the natural resonant frequency of certain laptop hard drives. The mind-boggling phenomenon, known as vibration resonance, has long wrought technological havoc with structures great and small, notably in the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse in 1940. Technicians solved the mystery (apparently some time ago) during an investigation reported last week in a blogged anecdote by Microsoft’s chief software engineer, Raymond Chen, picked up by The Next Web. The fix for the aff...
