They say success isn’t about luck, connections or even money. It’s the discipline to outwork everyone around you—a tenet which Ray Volpe has long been tethered to. The byproduct is Legend of the Volpetron, his new EP, out now by way of Disciple. The inventive record effectively pours gasoline on the broiling career of Volpe, who was named to EDM.com‘s Class of 2022 earlier this year. It’s a dazzling showcase of his generational production talents, which extend far beyond the confines of his breakout hit, “Laserbeam.” “It sounds cheesy, but it means everything to me! It’s a moment in time that I’ll look back on years from now,” Volpe tells EDM.com of his new EP. “I really wanted to mash everything I loved a...
Eliminate‘s latest single teeters precariously on the brink of emotional ruin. “Nothing Left” sees the Class of 2021 star joining forces with XAELO for a brooding record that pairs his melodic trap sensibilities with heart-wrenching lyricism. “Losing you is like taking my last breath,” XAELO elegiacally sings amid a smooth trap flow from Eliminate. Though he’s typically one to let his robust and often frenetic sound design do the bulk of the talking, Eliminate instead opts to let the track’s soul-stirring lyrics take center stage while following up each verse with his signature synth work. Cruising into the song’s final act, Eliminate doses the vocal up with filters and vocoder-based effects, effectively harmonizing the poignan...
Whyte Fang is ready to “get weird” with her debut in the City of Angels. The brainchild of Alison Wonderland was revived late last year with “TIDES,” a wonky single infused with distorted trap sound design. Teaming up with Brownies & Lemonade around the same time, Whyte Fang previewed what was to come with a mind-bending live set. After a break in the action, the Whyte Fang revival picked up considerably more steam this week. First, Wonderland previewed unreleased Whyte Fang music and blew the crowd away with a taste of the spellbinding show production and visuals backing the effort. Immediately after came the announcement of Whyte Fang’s headlining debut. For longtime fans of the trap and bass star, the location could not be more ideal: Los An...
A Lollapalooza security staffer is currently in jail after allegedly fabricating a mass shooting threat. The Chicago Tribune reports the staffer sought to get out of work early and intended to use the threat as cover. On the second day of the long-running Chicago music festival, 18-year-old Janya B. It’s official: The Mars Volta have announced their first new album in a decade. The self-titled LP is due September 16. The Mars Volta are also releasing a new song called “Vigil” today to celebrate the news. Check it out below. The Mars Volta is 14 tracks long and includes the previously released singles “Blacklight Shine” and “Graveyard Love.” Like those two songs, “Vigil” is a brisk number that’s far away from their prog-rock heyday, clocking in around three minutes. A press release states that the new album has only two tracks that are longer than four minutes and that the new record finds guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López and singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala at “their most mature, most concise, most focused.” Next month, the Mars Volta will hit the road for a North American tour. It starts in...
Madonna has jumped on the latest remix from Beyoncé’s Renaissance LP, “Break My Soul” (The Queens Remix). The song prominently features an interpolation of Madonna’s 1990 hit single “Vogue,” and name-drops a bevy of Black artists and ballroom legends. It’s available for purchase on her web store. Madonna’s original song and video for “Vogue” was a watershed moment for ballroom culture in the mainstream. In the new remix, Beyoncé calls out several ballroom houses, including the House of Aviance; she samples Kevin Aviance’s 1996 single “Cunty” on the Renaissance track “PURE/HONEY.” Beyoncé released Renaissance late last month; she’s already edited two songs in response to controversy over credits and ableist language. Earlier this week she shared a “Break My Soul” remix by Honey Dijon. ...
For all of us on the Lollapolooza train—we’re not getting it off of it anytime soon. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has announced that the city’s long-running music festival, held annually in Grant Park, will take place for at least another 10 years. Lightfoot publicly called Lollapalooza “not only a significant economic driver for our city, but a truly iconic Chicago summer festival.” The Chicago Tribune reports a contract between C3 Presents and the city of Chicago calls for the Chicago Park District to receive a share of all C3 revenue streams ranging from 5% to 20%, including admission, goods and services, licensing sales, sponsorships and streaming. The deal also states that the maximum number of attendees can’t exceed 115,000 at any time. ILLENIUM ...
