Black Sheep have filed a class-action lawsuit against Universal Music Group, Rolling Stone reports and Pitchfork can confirm. The 1990s hip-hop duo allege that the label owes more than $750 million in royalties to numerous Universal artists due to an early “sweetheart” arrangement with Spotify, which allowed the streaming company to pay less in royalties in exchange for Spotify stock. The artists are suing Universal for breach of contract, breach of duty of good faith and fair dealing, and unjust enrichment. In the lawsuit, plaintiffs Andres “Dres” Vargas Titus and William “Mista Lawnge” McLean allege that Universal “is withholding hundreds of millions of dollars in royalties” due to a “previously undisclosed” agreement with Spotify. This “sweetheart” arrangement allowed Spotify to license...

Man Accused of Killing Takeoff Released From Jail on $1M USD Bond

Patrick Clark, the man charged with the murder of Takeoff, has been released from jail on a $1 million USD bond. Court records showed that Clark made bond and was let out from holding in Houston on Wednesday, ABC13 reported. Clark’s bond was initially set at $2 million USD, after which Clark’s defense team argued for his bond to be lowered to $300,000 USD, claiming that their client lacked the necessary funds. Judge Josh Hill denied that request but agreed to lower bond to $1 million USD, determining that previous statements from Clark indicated he could afford to pay that amount and that there are bail bond companies that would be willing to comply. Prosecutors previously argued that Clark had obscured his finances. The suspect works as a DJ at a strip club and said he deals mostly in cas...

A Decade Into His Career, Rapper OhGeesy Is Just Getting Started

In April 2020, just two years after inking a major label deal with Atlantic Records, Shoreline Mafia announced to their avid fans that they would be breaking up, citing “creative differences” among group members. However short their tenure may have been, the West Coast hip-hop collective — composed of OhGeesy, Fenix Flexin, Rob Vicious and Master Kato — had accrued a cult following thanks to murky trap hits like “Nun Major,” “Musty” and the infamous “Bands.” Three months later, in July, Shoreline would drop their debut album Mafia Bidness, a record that, while well-received, had a quiet arrival devoid of major-label fanfare. From the ashes of Shoreline Mafia, OhGeesy, the architect behind the group and most versatile lyricist, returned last year with his first solo mixtape, GEEZYWORLD. The...
