Shonka Dukureh, the singer and actress who recently portrayed blues legend Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton in Baz Luhrmann’s new film Elvis, has died. Dukureh was found dead in her Nashville apartment Thursday (July 21), the Metro Nashville Police Department told local outlet The Tennessean. The department then issued a statement via its official Twitter account confirming the news and stating that no foul play was evident in Dukureh’s death. She was 44 years old. According to The Tennessean, Dukureh was found unresponsive by one of her two children, who went to the neighbor’s apartment for help. Michael Henderson, an R&B singer and jazz fusion bassist who also played on Miles Davis’ records throughout the 1970s, has died, as first announced on his Facebook page. Henderson’s son, Michael Henderson Jr., told Pitchfork over the phone that his father died of cancer complications on the afternoon of Tuesday (July 19) at his home in Atlanta, Georgia. Henderson is survived by his son Michael and his daughters Michelle and Chelsea. The Late Show With Stephen Colbert has announced a series of new musical residencies, as Deadline notes. St. Vincent, James Taylor, and the Eagles’ Joe Walsh will be the CBS late-night show’s inaugural residents, joining Jon Batiste’s house band Stay Human for one week at a time. The residencies will start on July 25 with a week of performances from St. Vincent’s Annie Clark, followed by performances from Taylor starting August 1 and Walsh starting August 8. The residencies will be the first time each songwriter has performed with Stay Human and late-night house bands generally.
