Move over, Jaws soundtrack—Tomer Baruch is showing there’s more to the sounds of the deep sea than what the sharks are selling. In Synthesized Sounds of the Sea, Baruch captures the mystique and splendor of just a fraction of the many creatures lurking in the deep sea. Recording with analog synthesizers, the renowned Israeli sound artist paints the unique worlds of the eels, dolphins, starfish and other creatures gliding through in the depths with unique sonic palettes. R.E.M. Announce 40th Anniversary Reissue of Debut EP

R.E.M. are reissuing their debut EP, Chronic Town, on CD, picture disc, and cassette. The new release is due out August 19 (via I.R.S./UMe). The follow-up to the band’s breakout 1981 single “Radio Free Europe,” Chronic Town features the classic tracks “Gardening at Night,” “Wolves,” and more. Listen to the EP below. Of the reissue, original producer Mitch Easter—who wrote the liner notes for the new pressing—said in a statement: “One might fancifully say that Chronic Town was the sound of an expedition, ready for anything, setting forth. Lavender Country—the project of Seattle-based folk singer Patrick Haggerty—has shared a new music video for his early single “I Can’t Shake the Stranger Out of You.” Originally released on the Lavender Country’s 1973 self-titled debut, the anthem of queer love and intimacy was re-recorded for this year’s Blackberry Rose. Chicago producer and multi-instrumentalist Nnamdï has announced a new album. It’s called Please Have a Seat and it is due October 7 via Secretly Canadian and Sooper Records, marking his debut on the former label. The lead single, “I Don’t Wanna Be Famous,” comes with an Austin Vesley–directed video in which Nnamdï is harassed by paparazzi and obsessive fans. Sony Music to Offer Financial Support for College Students With New Initiative

Sony Music Group will offer financial and other support to students studying music and music business-related fields via a new program announced Tuesday. Funding for the program is being provided by Sony’s $100 million social justice fund, unveiled by the company in June 2020. The Sony Music Group Global Scholars Program will provide scholarships to up to 50 students from diverse backgrounds who are enrolled at accredited colleges and universities across the globe.
