Since the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK burst onto our screens back in January 2021, it’s become one of the main highlights of our weeks. Whether it’s the heartfelt stories exchanged in the dressing room, the catty remarks following RuPaul’s critiques, or the dazzling celebrity judges, each week on Drag Race UK has proven itself to be something truly special. However, what’s undoubtedly most impressive is of course the outfits. Each episode sees the queens completing a number of challenges that all involve serving some serious “lewks”, and after RuPaul’s unfortunate outburst back in episode five (you know, that H&M comment), the pressure has been on for the contestants to prove their worth on the runway. So far, the majority of t...
Normal People‘s Daisy Edgar-Jones was nominated for best actress in a movie/miniseries at the virtual streaming of the 26th Critics’ Choice Awards. Although Anya Taylor-Joy took home the accolade for The Queen’s Gambit, Daisy’s plunging red Oscar de la Renta minidress was a trophy all on its own. Daisy’s gorgeous look was courtesy of stylist Nicky Yates. The Normal People actor wore a scarlet red dress with a plunging square neckline and billowing elbow-length puff sleeves, and paired it with shoes by Jimmy Choo. For beauty, Daisy went for a low ponytail by Danna Rutherford and simple black eyeliner applied in a thick line on her top eyelid by Gina Kane along with an otherwise neutral Chanel makeup look. “Thank you @criticschoice for this nomination!!! What’s one thing you wish would change when it comes to conversations around diversity in the fashion industry? I think diversity should start from within. In my opinion, though, both are important. I think it’s more important than those who are pulling the strings are who we want to represent us as opposed to who we SEE being represented. If internally you have a creative team that’s, of course, great and passionate about their craft that’s diverse, then your results will show that genuinely and naturally. You’ll see the diversity in the results be it a campaign like my recent campaigns with AE, runway, an editorial, a movie, or whatever the medium might be. If the people in control are a non-diverse group, then efforts to be inclusive are executed poorly due...
The seventh episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK aired on 25 Feb., and it featured a sewing challenge that’s got everyone talking. The challenge involved the queens making super-shero dresses out of unconventional materials, inspired by the recent lockdown. Nottingham-based queen A’Whora won the challenge with a bright blue dress made out of bin liners, inspired by the NHS — and with that alone, she had my vote. Having studied a diploma in fashion and womenswear, it came as no surprise that A’Whora would be the winner of this challenge, creating a formfitting body with ruffled shoulders and a glistening belt. She took to Twitter to share her gratitude. She tweeted “thank you everyone for this moment, after I’ve studied for over 8 years the art of fashion, th...
While Douglas says that he doesn’t have the “bravery to be as wild as Roscoe” and he doesn’t “show a lot of skin”, I wonder if he thinks that Roscoe’s wardrobe has rubbed off on his own style? “This week, I’ve been wearing a lot of Carlota Barrera and the jumper I’m wearing today is actually quite Roscoe [points to his wide-knit blue tie-dye jumper] so I think it’s bleeding into my own style. I think this [press tour] is definitely helping me to push it a little.” Clearly though, there’s always been an element of Roscoe in Douglas’s wardrobe, as he reveals he turned up to the fitting wearing something his character would wear. “I wore big hiking boots from Camper with an all black outfit and Ian [Fulcher, the costume designer] said “oh my god, Roscoe would so wear that”. You Deserve t...
this time last year I went to the Brits and dressed as the girl I always wish I saw on TV pic.twitter.com/2fjUtDGZNP — Joy Crookes (@joycrookes) February 18, 2021 It’s officially been a year since the BRIT Awards last took place, and we’re still talking about some of the amazing fashion from the event. One look in particular stands out, however. On 18 Feb. 2020, singer-songwriter Joy Crookes paid the ultimate tribute to her roots, walking the red carpet in an Indian lehenga and chunni (top and skirt with a matching scarf), something you don’t usually see at Western award shows. Nominated for the Rising Star Award, she spoke to BBC about her red carpet statement and said that she hoped that “young girls can see someone who looks like their mum, their auntie, their gr...

For decades, musicians have recorded music with the specific intent of helping foster child development in utero and teach soon-to-be kids iconic rap hooks. Now the tables have turned: an unborn baby has recorded her debut album, presumably for the enjoyment of full-grown humans. The baby, named Luca Yupanqui, is the soon-to-be child of Psychic Ills bassist Elizabeth Hart and Lee “Scratch” Perry collaborator Iván Diaz Mathé. Yupanqui created the songs on her album using biosonic MIDI technology that translated her in-utero movements into sound. The MIDI device was hooked to Hart’s stomach, recorded the vibrations created by Yupanqui, and transcribed them into Mathé’s synthesizers, a meditative process that took place over five hour-long sessions. Hart and Mathé then edited and mixed the re...
Last month, Rostam set Amanda Gorman’s now-famous Inauguration poem to music using piano arrangements. The former Vampire Weekend member is back today, this time with a dazzling original song of his own dubbed “These Kids We Knew”. Stream it below. This new offering revolves around a musical pulse meant to reflect the innocence of youth and the impermanence of stability. According to a press release, Rostam wrote “These Kids We Knew” in a “fever-dream state” in March of last year — during which he was recovering from COVID-19 — while reflecting on the push and pull of societal responsibility. “I was thinking of three generations while I was writing this song,” he explained. “There’s a generation of adults who don’t see global warming as their problem because they think they won’t...
Alexa, what do you do after you’ve conquered the world? In an email to his employees, Amazon founder and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos has announced he’ll be stepping down in Q3, with current head of Amazon Web Services Andy Jassy taking over. Bezos will transition to the role of Executive Chairman, where he’ll be less involved in day-to-day operations but still focused on long-term strategy. In his letter, Bezos wrote that, “In the Exec Chair role, I intend to focus my energies and attention on new products and early initiatives,” while investing more time in his personal and philanthropic projects. He continued, “As Exec Chair I will stay engaged in important Amazon initiatives but also have the time and energy I need to focus on the Day 1 Fund, the Bezos Earth Fund, Blue Origin, Th...
