Tunde Adebimpe has shared a new song called “ReelFeel” — perhaps because the more appropriate title of Dance Dance Revolution was already taken. “ReelFeel” is a toe-tapping ode to regime change, as well as a charity single benefiting the Audre Lord Project. Earlier in his career, the TV on the Radio frontman was more concerned with interior struggles and the emotional distance between individuals. But the dumpster fire of 2020 has pulled his attention to public spaces, and the results are as magnificent and incisive as fans could have hoped. Last month on Juneteenth, Adebimpe shared the protest song “People”, and “ReelFeel” is a spiritual successor — a kind of “after” shot accompanying the pained “before” of “People”. “ReelFeel” was produced by Chrome Sparks, who called the cut a “sco...
Charlie Daniels, the Country Music Hall of Fame member best known for the hit single “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”, has died at the age of 83. According to The Tennessean, Daniels passed away Monday, June 6th, after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke. Having mastered guitar, fiddle, banjo, and mandolin by the age of 20, Daniels got his start in Nashville as a session musician. Notably, he played bass on three Bob Dylan albums, including 1969’s Nashville Skyline. He also worked alongside Leonard Cohen and Ringo Starr. In 1972, Charlie Daniels formed the Charlie Daniels Band and promptly achieved a string of country hits in “Uneasy Ride”, “The South’s Gonna Do It Again”, and “Long Haired Country Boy”. In 1979, Daniels composed what proved to be the definitive song of his caree...
Vanilla Ice canceled his Fourth of July concert in Texas, citing concerns over the coronavirus and the safety of his fans. But lackluster ticket sales may have also contributed to his decision. Thanks to a legal loophole in Texas allowing restaurants to stay open at 50% capacity, Vanilla Ice had been scheduled to headline the “Independence Day Throwback Beach Party” at the Emerald Point Bar & Grill on Friday night. The venue made 2,500 tickets available to the event, with prices ranging from $25 to $300. But of those, only 284 were sold prior to Vanilla Ice deciding to cancel the show. The venue’s owner, William Brannam, told ABC News that he sold 84 general admission tickets, 96 VIP tickets, and 104 seated tickets. For comparison, Vanilla Ice played at the same venue last year an...
Neil Young considers Donald Trump “a disgrace to my country,” so you can understand his furor over the repeated, unauthorized use of his music at campaign events. Last night, during Trump’s super racist Fourth of July celebration at Mount Rushmore, at least three of Young’s songs played aloud: “Keep on Rockin in the Free World”, “Like a Hurricane”, and “Cowgirl in the Sand” Young responded to a clip of “Rockin in the Free World” being played by writing simply, “This is NOT Ok with me…” He later quote tweeted a second clip, writing, “I stand in solidarity with the Lakota Sioux & this is NOT ok with me.” (For context, the Lakota Sioux was the indigenous group of people who were forced off their land and saw their spiritual shrine “The Six Grandfathers” turned into Mount Ru...

Even dead musicians want nothing to do with Donald Trump. In response to Donald Trump’s announcement that he intends to build a “National Garden of Heroes” with statues of famous Americans including Frank Sinatra, the singer’s daughter has reminded Trump that her father “loathed him.” Replying to a tweet from Mia Farrow in which she wrote, “Frank Sinatra would have loathed Donald Trump,” Nancy Sinatra confirmed as much: “He actually did loathe him.” At least some of the bad blood between Trump and Frank Sinatra dates back to 1990, according to a recent book published by Sinatra’s manager, Elliot Weisman. Sinatra had been booked to open Trump’s Atlantic City casino, only to be informed at the last minute that Trump sought to renegotiate Sinatra’s rate. Trump also canceled his booking of Sin...
Nick Cordero, an accomplished Tony Award-nominated Broadway actor, has died at the age of 41 due to complications from coronavirus. Cordero’s wife, Amanda Kloots, announced her husband’s passing in a statement posted to Instagram on Sunday, July 5th. “God has another angel in heaven now. My darling husband passed away this morning. He was surrounded in love by his family, singing and praying as he gently left this earth,” Kloots wrote. “I am in disbelief and hurting everywhere. My heart is broken as I cannot imagine our lives without him. Nick was such a bright light,” Kloots added. “He was everyone’s friend, loved to listen, help and especially talk. He was an incredible actor and musician. He loved his family and loved being a father and husband. Elvis and I will miss him in everything w...
Ryan Adams has resurfaced with a new statement in which he acknowledges his past sexual misconduct. While the veteran singer-songwriter emphasizes that this is not the “the same empty bullshit apology that I’ve always used when I was called out,” he ultimately raises questions about the sincerity and true intentions of his apology by mentioning all of the new music he has in the works. Reports of Adams’ alleged sexual and psychological abuse were first documented in a New York Times article published in February 2019. Several prominent musicians went on record about Adams’ misconduct, including Adams’ ex-wife Mandy Moore, Phoebe Bridgers, Liz Phair, and Karen Elson. In light of the allegations, the FBI’s Crimes Against Children Squad opened an inquir...
In the absence of leadership from the White House, other prominent figures have stepped up and encouraged their fellow Americans to wear face masks. Earlier this week, Tom Hanks put the decision to abstain from face coverings in blunt terms: “Don’t be a pussy, get on with it, do your part.” Now, Bill Pullman — perhaps best known for playing President Thomas J. Whitmore in Independence Day — has filmed a PSA encouraging Americans to follow his lead and wear their “freedom masks.” “Hello America. I may not be your president right now, but I’ve got to tell you that Fourth of July is still my favorite holiday, and it always will be. This Independence Day, I’m going to be celebrating my freedom in an important way. I’m going to be wearing my freedom mask every time I go into public. That’s righ...
Kanye West has long expressed an interest in running for president, though he previously said he would wait until Donald Trump was out of office. Now, though, the billionaire polymath has seemingly announced his intention to seek the presidency in 2020. “We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future,” Kanye wrote in a tweeted post on Independence Day. “I am running for president of the United States! #2020Vision” Given that the election is less than four months away, and with the filing deadline for a number of states having already passed, Kanye’s path to the White House won’t be easy. Additionally, he recently agreed to become the creative director of the Gap, with plans to launch his initial product line in early 2021. How he int...
