Producers of the film festival darling and critically acclaimed Minari have stirred controversy by submitting the film for the Golden Globes’ Best Foreign Language Film category, making it ineligible for Best Picture. Though mostly in Korean, Minari is a quintessentially American-made film. It was produced by an American company (A24), written and directed by an American filmmaker (Lee Isaac Chung), shot in America, and stars a South Korean-American actor (Steven Yeun). Even the plot is all about the American story, that of an immigrant family fighting for their dreams. Yet, because of Golden Globe rules, the movie was submitted under the Best Foreign Language Film category. According to The Los Angeles Times, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s rules for submissions classify a forei...
You better not pout, ARMY members, because BTS’ Jimin and V have gifted fans a pair of new Christmas songs, “Christmas Love” and “Snow Flower”. Jimin’s “Christmas Love” is a snappy pop number that shines as crisply as a blanket of fresh snow. The “love” of the track title isn’t about a specific person, however, and more about the feeling this time of year brings to many. Roughly translated from Korean, Jimin sings, “Christmas I love you/ Oh, you’re the one forever/ I wish it was today.” As he explained in a post on the official BTS blog (again, translated from Korean), Jimin wrote the song to reconnect with his childhood memories of the holidays: “As we grew, feeling responsibility for what we have, that responsibility made us, who were innocent, mature and I think that enables us to hide ...
It looks like Sex and the City is getting a reboot. Deadline confirmed with sources that HBO is working out a deal to revive the beloved drama as a limited series for its premium streaming service, HBO Max. If this pans out, it will be the latest of three HBO classics to be rebooted on the streaming service. Over the summer, the WarnerMedia-owned company announced the revival of its beloved psychotherapy drama In Treatment. And earlier this month we learned that a reboot of the cult-favorite vampire series True Blood was also in the works. However, considering that Sex and the City was undoubtedly one of the most iconic shows of the 2000s, a proper reboot would be a huge deal. The series that Darren Star created based on Candace Bushnell’s book ran for six seasons ...
They say the best jokes hit close to home, and now Dave Chappelle is taking that literally. According to Yellow Springs News, the famed comedian has purchased a former fire station in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and received approval to transform the space into a combination comedy club and restaurant. Chappelle’s roots in the area go back to his childhood, when his father worked as a professor at nearby Antioch College. Then, over the summer, he hosted a socially-distanced, outdoor standup series in the township’s Wirrig Pavilion. Now, he’s proving that the college town is more than just a place to ride out quarantine with the announcement of his new club. The price of the sale is not public, but the fire station was originally listed for $400,000, and the township of Yellow Springs has be...
John “Ecstasy” Fletcher, co-founder of the trailblazing hip-hop group Whodini, is dead at 56. Mark those calendars, ’cause Warner Bros. has officially announced a release date for Furiosa. The Mad Max spinoff film will arrive on June 23rd, 2023. Furiosa serves as the prequel to the acclaimed 2015 epic Mad Max: Fury Road. George Miller is returning to direct, co-write, and produce the project alongside Doug Mitchell. An exact premise hasn’t been revealed, but as its title indicates, the movie will revolve around a young Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy. Our 2020 Performer of the Year has unsurprisingly picked up a ton of buzz the last few months thanks to The Queen’s Gambit, the most viewed scripted limited-series in Netflix history. Taylor-Joy will be joined by Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, though their exact roles aren’t known at this time. Editors’ Picks...
Merry Christmas Eve! Slaughter Beach, Dog, the side-project of Modern Baseball’s Jake Ewald, has surprise released a new album. It’s called At the Moonbase and it’s available to stream below via Apple Music and Spotify. This is Ewald’s fourth full-length under the Slaughter Beach, Dog moniker. Technically it follows his 2019 album Safe and Also No Fear, but musically this new record is more akin to his 2016 debut Welcome and 2017’s Motorcycle.JPG. Written and recorded alone at home and at The Metal Shop, Ewald’s recording studio in East Kensington, At the Moonbase is an exercise in solitary production and solo songwriting, no doubt in part due to the coronavirus pandemic. Across its 11-song tracklist, Ewald dips into slacker rock, expanded arrangements, and melancholic piano. It’...

Daft Punk have revealed Tron: Legacy — The Complete Edition, a 10th anniversary update of their only film soundtrack. That deluxe edition was only available on vinyl until this week, when it suddenly appeared on some streaming services for the first time. The movie that Tom Cruise is set to film in outer space somehow just got even more realistic. According to IndieWire, a Russian TV channel is aiming to shoot its own movie beyond our atmosphere before Cruise gets a chance to take off, creating a modern equivalent of the Cold War-era space race between America and the Soviet Union. Earlier this year, Cruise confirmed that he was teaming up with NASA and Elon Musk’s Space X program to star in a $200 million dollar film that will be partially shot on the International Space Station. The feat would make Cruise the first actor to ever film a Hollywood narrative feature in outer space. But between his prior obligations and the ongoing COVID pandemic, shooting for the still-untitled film isn’t supposed to begin until at least 2022, and Russia (cl...
