Ben Gibbard, Isaac Brock, Duff McKagan, and Mark Lanegan Cover “The Highwayman”: Watch

At the very least, the ongoing lockdown has resulted in some very odd musical pairings that likely wouldn’t have happened otherwise. The latest of these went down on December 5th, when Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan, Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock, and Mark Lanegan teamed up to cover the Jimmy Webb country classic, “The Highwayman”. The collaboration was part of SMooCH 2020, an annual benefit show for the Seattle Children’s Hospital that usually takes place in person, but was converted into livestream form this year for obvious reasons. The Seattle institutions Sub Pop Records and KEXP were two of the event’s biggest sponsors, so it made sense that both elite and slightly left-of-center members of the rock world were featured in the presentation. For their ...

Self-Proclaimed Centrist Matthew McConaughey Criticizes Hollywood’s “Illiberal Left”

During a recent appearance on comedian Russell Brand’s podcast, Matthew McConaughey explained his “aggressively centrist” political views while taking both the left and right to task. McConaughey has been espousing a burgeoning political interest recently, even going so far as to mull over the idea of running for Governor of Texas. However, the actor sees politics as a “broken business” split too adamantly along divisive lines. On his Under the Skin podcast, Brand asked McConaughey about the “judgement” and values of the left-right divide, specifically noting the “condemnation and criticism” of “ordinary working people” who voted for Brexit or Trump. The actor responded that “the two vehicles on either side of the political aisle are so far apart, their fucking tires aren’t even on the pav...

Anthrax’s Scott Ian Unveils New SGT D Guitar Pedal

Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian has teamed up with KHDK Electronics for a limited-edition signature SGT D guitar pedal. Stylized with the infamous Sargent D mascot from Ian’s crossover thrash band Stormtroopers of Death (S.O.D.), the two-in-one pedal functions as a boost/pre-distortion EQ control and has another section for amp modeling that emulates the guitarist’s S.O.D.-era tones. To top it off, as you play, the tip of Sgt. D’s cigar lights up red. “Get this if you want to stop shitting in people’s ears with your ass tone,” states the Sgt. D (aka Ian) in the product description. “Scott knew what he wanted — a ruthlessly vicious pedal that captures his S.O.D. amp tone,” David Karon of KHDK wrote. “Of course, the absolute maniac that he is, he also wanted it to work as a magical booster and m...

What the Cluck? Mario Lopez Plays Colonel Sanders in KFC-Lifetime Original Film A Recipe for Seduction

The original Colonel Sanders looked like a mashed potato with glasses, so consider Mario Lopez the spicy option. The Saved by the Bell heartthrob will star as chef Harland Sanders in the new Lifetime original mini-movie A Recipe for Seduction. This corporate dystopian cluster-cluck will air December 13th on Lifetime, and the first trailer is out now. While KFC and Lifetime may seem like clashing flavors, the fast food retailer has proved that anything can go with anything, so long as your bucket is big enough. Besides, the two companies have a few things in common, especially a reliance on a tried-and-true formula, whether that is a woman in jeopardy with a violent male partner or the 11 original herbs and spices. Both make appearances in the 15-minute film, judging by the new trailer...

That Christmas-themed episode focused on the aftermath of Zendaya’s Roe being left by Jules at the train station and relapsing. In the new Sam Levinson-directed special, Jules (played by Hunter Schafer) reflects on her year during the holiday break and gets caught up in decoding those memories. According to a press release, Schafer co-wrote and co-executive produced it alongside Levinson. Catch the second special episode live when it airs on HBO at 9:00 p.m. EST on January 24th, or watch it ...

John Carpenter Shares Chilling New Song “The Dead Walk”: Stream

In February, John Carpenter will drop Lost Themes III: Alive After Death, his first non-soundtrack album in almost five years. After teasing the release with “Weeping Ghost” just a few days before Halloween, the Master of Horror is back now with “The Dead Walk”. As with his previous Lost Themes II from 2016, Carpenter here is working alongside son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies. Together, the three here conjure a moment straight out of a classic Italian giallo — think specifically of a zombie chase scene that takes place inside of an old Gothic church. Icy piano feels tingly to the touch, while dissonant synths hint at the evil lurking behind the confessional. Around the 1:36 mark, synthesized industrial guitar riffs drop into the mix, adding an extra layer of crunch and...

Morgan Wallen Roasts Himself in SNL Sketch About Getting Kicked Off the Show for Violating COVID Protocol: Watch

Two months after seeing his debut appearance on SNL canceled after breaking COVID protocol, country singer Morgan Wallen got a second crack at serving as the show’s musical guest during last night’s episode. In a sketch preceding his first performance, Wallen spoofed the incident that led to his initial cancelation. If you recall, Wallen had been scheduled to play SNL on October 10th, but his appearance was pulled at the last-minute after video surfaced of him partying at a University of Alabama bar. He was replaced by Jack White, who delivered one of the most memorable performances in recent SNL history. Last night’s sketch opened with Wallen walking into a bar with a beer in his left hand and his face covering around his neck. “To no consequences!” he yells, before kissing a college girl...

Pete Davidson Spoofs Eminem’s “Stan” Video on SNL: Watch

After an extended hiatus, Saturday Night Live returned this weekend with a new episode hosted by Jason Bateman.  Among the standout sketches was a Christmas-themed parody of Eminem’s classic “Stan” video, starring Pete Davidson as “Stu”. In the sketch, Davidson repeatedly writes to Santa Claus asking for a PlayStation 5. The spoofing also includes cameos from Dido Stu’s mom (played by Kate McKinnon), Sir Elton John (Bowen Yang), and ***spoiler*** one Marshall Bruce Mathers himself. Yes, the real Slim Shady makes a surprise appearance at the end of the sketch. Watch it below. At the top of this year, Eminem dropped his latest album, Music to Be Murdered By. Over the summer, he joined Big Sean on a new song called “The Adventures of Moon Man and Slim Shady”. Out...

Liam Gallagher Performs “All You’re Dreaming Of” from Atop a Floating Barge on Fallon: Watch

On Saturday night, Liam Gallagher will present a special concert livestream called “Down by the River Thames”. Set to take place atop a barge floating on the River Thames outside of London, the outdoor event will see the British rocker and his band roll out solo cuts as well as a number of Oasis classics, “some of which you haven’t heard me sing for a long, long time,” he promises. As a preview of this unique setup, Gallagher performed his new holiday single “All You’re Dreaming Of” from atop the barge for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Friday night. Oasis have no doubt played in various venues and arenas all over the world, but I doubt Gallagher ever saw himself rocking out on such a contraption, socially distanced, and amidst a pandemic. All weird circumstances aside, the...
