Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will return to Saturday Night Live on December 12th to serve as the evening’s musical guest. Dune actor Timothée Chalamet will host the episode. The Boss and his band will take their third turn on SNL, having previously played the show in 2002 and 2015. (Springsteen appeared in a solo capacity in 1992). This time around, they’ll be supporting their new album, Letter to You. SNL has also announced that country star Morgan Wallen will serve as musical guest on its December 5th episode, appearing alongside host Jason Bateman. If you recall, Wallen was scheduled to play SNL earlier in the season, but his appearance was canceled after he broke COVID-19 safety protocols. In his place, SNL tapped Jack White and he delivered one of the more memorable pe...
Christine and the Queens has teamed up with Indochine band leader Nicola Sirkis for a collaborative song called “3SEX”. The track reworks Indochine’s iconic French new wave cut “3e sexe”, originally released in 1986, into a synthpop dance tune about queer liberation. When sharing the song online, Chris posted a statement in French explaining what it means to her. “Thank you @nicolasirkis @indochinetwitt for the honor and for giving me the confidence to sing ‘3SEX’ with you, at a time when the very word freedom takes on all its meaning and urgency,” she tweeted. “Real revolutions never die. Love you!” In the “3SEX” music video, Chris and Sirkis strut across a blank white space while dressed in black garments. When the chorus hits, the lights start to flash and reveal that they’re both stand...
Fresh off their first musical Grammy nod, the superstar K-pop group BTS dialed in to The Late Late Show with James Corden to discuss the Grammy Awards and perform their newly-nominated song “Dynamite”. Despite Corden’s introduction touting their “first ever Grammy nomination,” the Bangtan Boys had previously been up for Best Recording Package in 2019 for their album Love Yourself: Tear. But this is the first time that J-Hope, Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, V, RM, and Suga were recognized for their musical contributions, and they certainly seemed excited. Corden showed a video of the members watching as their name was called, complete with hooting, clapping, and jumping off the couch. But one member, V, merely sat there in shock. As he explained, “The reactions were different for each...
Minneapolis three piece The Soviet Machines lived out an alt-rock dream when they traveled to Seattle to work with producer Jack Endino (Nirvana’s Bleach). The band is now premiering the music video for “Get Your Kicks”, the lead single from their upcoming debut album, exclusively via Heavy Consequence. The Soviet Machines’ vintage power trio approach is well suited for Endino, who captured many of the Seattle grunge scene’s legendary guitar bands. He’s got major credits on records by Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, and countless others. Most recently, Endino has produced the acclaimed works of US doom institution Windhand. The veteran recording engineer’s touch is apparent on “Get Your Kicks”, an upbeat rocker with solid tone — mostly recorded live without overdubs. The S...
Mere months after dropping a new song out of nowhere, Arab Strap have returned with even bigger news. The Scottish indie rockers have just announced their first new album in 16 years. It’s called As Days Get Dark and it’s due out March 5th via Rock Action. As Days Get Dark follows Arab Strap’s great 2005 album The Last Romance, shortly after which they called it quits. This new full-length spans 11 tracks in total, including “The Turning of Our Bones”, which they dropped in September. The song was put out as a standalone number, but now we know it’s actually the album opener on As Days Get Dark, according to the tracklist. The joyful outfit, comprised of Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton, released a statement to accompany the news, saying As Days Get Dark should feel like both a care...
Netflix is unwrapping some big gifts in December 2020. The shiniest box under the proverbial tree is David Fincher’s Mank. The filmmaker’s first feature in six years stars Oscar winner Gary Oldman as legendary Hollywood screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and the drama that surrounded his work on Citizen Kane. Another star-studded feature is Ryan Murphy’s The Prom, a fish-out-of-water comedy that finds Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, and Keegan-Michael Key putting on a Broadway production in a small town. That should keep the family business. Elsewhere, there’s the highly anticipated Selena: The Series, the fourth season of Big Mouth, the fourth and final season of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and the de facto seasonal docuseries The Holiday Movies That Made Us. Nominations for the 2021 Grammy Awards were revealed on Tuesday, and BTS have scored themselves a big one: Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Dynamite”. This marks their first music-focused Grammy nomination, and their second overall following a Best Recording Package nod in 2019 for their album Love Yourself: Tear. Additionally, it marks the first-ever performance Grammy nomination for a K-pop group. The septet — that’s J-Hope, Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, V, RM, and Suga — is set to face off against a category stacked with pop royalty. The other contenders include “Rain on Me” by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande; “UN DIA” by Bad Bunny, Dua Lipa, and J Balvin; “Intentions” from Justin Bieber and Quavo; and “Exile” by Taylor Swift and Bon Iver. “Dynamite”, the lead single off new album BE, quick...
Bon Iver vs. Nicki Minaj Earlier Tuesday, the nominations for the 2021 Grammy Awards were revealed. But not quite everyone is ready to start thinking about next year’s big ceremony: mere hours after today’s announcement, Nicki Minaj reminded Twitter she’s still mad about being snubbed at the 2012 Grammys. Minaj specifically dragged Bon Iver, who beat her to win the Best New Artist accolade that year. “Never forget the Grammys didn’t give me my best new artist award when I had 7 songs simultaneously charting on billboard & bigger first week than any female rapper in the last decade- went on to inspire a generation,” a still-salty Minaj tweeted this afternoon. “They gave it to the white man Bon Iver.” On the strength of sophomore album Bon Iver, Bon Iver, the Justin Vernon-led indie...
The single is dead; all hail the double single. Having already released a two-pack in September, and teaming on another from Femdot earlier this month, the hip-hop chameleon Saba has now released two new songs, “So and So” and “Areyoudown? Pt. 2” featuring fellow Chicagoan Tobi Lou. “So and So” is a laid-back ode to the flow, with the 26-year-old rapper reveling in double- and triple-rhymes based around the flexible “oh” sound. He raps, “Propose a toast ya know,” and with the way he pronounces “propose,” and “toast” that’s four “ohs” right there. He continues, “You made the most with all your highs and lows/ Stick to the code you know the same as before/ Gang la costra nostra.” The song comes with a pastoral music video that showcases Saba in what looks like the hills of Italy. He sits in ...
On November 1st, Chappelle’s Show was added to Netflix’s library. Now, less than a month later, it’s been removed from the platform — at the request of Dave Chappelle himself. In a lengthy Instagram video, the comedian claimed that he hasn’t been properly paid for his work on the iconic sketch series, and that he was never consulted about Netflix’s streaming deal. In the 18-minute clip titled “Unforgiven”, Chappelle asserted that he “never got paid” after departing Chappelle’s Show. The 47-year-old comedian also alleged that ViacomCBS, the company which owns the show, never reached out to him regarding licensing the series to Netflix. “They [ViacomCBS] didn’t have to pay me because I signed the contract,” Chappelle said in the video, which compiles footage from recent stand-up gi...
Warm up those pocket tater tots because the cast of Napoleon Dynamite is set to reunite for a special livestream next month. Officially dubbed “Cyber Dynamite”, the pre-recorded broadcast will feature Napoleon himself (Jon Heder), as well as class president Pedro (Efrem Ramirez), Uncle Rico (Jon Gries), and sideways ponytail’d gal pal Deb (Tina Majorino). Mean girl Summer (Haylie Duff) and Kip’s internet boo LaFawnduh (Shondrella Avery) are also expected to appear, as will a number of other “surprise” cast members. A liger perhaps? The virtual reunion is set to be more than just a quick hit of nostalgia for fans of the 2004 cult classic, though. It will also serve as a fundraiser for The Hunger Project, which works to end hunger across the globe. Editors’ Picks “Cyber Dynamite” offic...
