Having already created an anime series based on its massively popular Star Wars franchise, Disney is now looking to create more anime content for its streaming service Disney+. Calling anime a “focus area,” the company’s Japan head of animation Takuto Yawata says that he is confident the genre “will open a new door” for Disney+ and that “We have great expectations for producing local content. this includes completely new works from Japan.” He added that the integrity of the content will also be respected, and the shows won’t be changed to appeal more to western audiences: “We deeply respect the works of Japanese creators, and we will transmit them overseas just the way they are.” The comments come shortly after Netflix revealed its own viewership for anime across 2021. Bruce Willis is retiring from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia, his family announced. A joint statement shared by the Willis family explained that the veteran actor was recently diagnosed with aphasia, which is described by John Hopkins Medicine as “a language disorder caused by damage in a specific area of the brain that controls language expression and comprehension,” and “leaves a person unable to communicate effectively with others.” His family wrote, “To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities. A prequel series to It is reportedly in the works over at HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television. According to sources, the project currently has the working title Welcome to Derry and is set in the 1960s — just before the events of Andy Muschietti’s It: Part One, which is based on Stephen King’s novel. It will also supposedly feature the origin story of Pennywise the Clown, who was last portrayed by Bill Skarsgård in Muschietti’s 2017 and 2019 adaptations. More than half of Netflix‘s global viewership has tuned in to anime over the past year. In a recent interview with Variety, the streaming platform’s anime creative director Kohei Obara revealed some impressive statistics for 2021 in relation to the popular animated genre. “Anime is one of the cornerstones of our investment in Japan, watched by nearly 90% of our members here last year.
