Róisín Murphy Announces New Album Róisín Machine, Shares Aching Single “Something More”: Stream

Veteran songwriter and producer Róisín Murphy has announced her first album in over four years. Dubbed Róisín Machine, it’s slated for arrival on September 25th through Skint/BMG. Consisting of 10 songs, the new effort follows up on 2016’s Take Her Up To Monto and the 2015 Mercury Prize-nominated Hairless Toys. Like much of her past output, the LP continues Murphy’s creative partnership with longtime collaborator Crooked Man, aka DJ Parrot, and features varying shades of disco and funk. Our initial peek at Murphy’s Machine comes in the form of “Something More”, which was written by New York City-based musician Amy Douglas. “We met last year at a very interesting talk event in london about the psychology and science of Dub,” Murphy recalled in a statement. “We hit it off imme...

100 gecs have shared their new remix album, 1000 gecs & The Tree of Clues. Take a listen below via Apple Music or Spotify. For a high-definition listening experience, you can sign up for a 60-day free trial of TIDAL HiFi. The new collection of music sees Dylan Brady and Laura Les reworking songs off 1000 gecs, their acclaimed 2019 debut album. They didn’t go at it alone, though, as the experimental duo called on friends and past collaborators for assistance, including Charli XCX, Rico Nasty, and Kero Kero Bonito (“ringtone” remix), Dorian Electra (“gec 2 Ü” remix), A. G. Cook (“money machine” remix), and GFOTY and Count Baldor (“stupid horse” remix). There’s also a reimagined version of “hand crushed by a mallet” featuring veteran pop punk/emo acts Fall Out Boy and Craig Owens of Chiod...

Sevdaliza Shares Haunting New Song “Joanna”: Stream

The Iranian-Dutch artist Sevdaliza has shared her new song, “Joanna”. The haunting single comes from an unnamed album, due out later this summer. For fans of Sevdaliza’s 2017 debut album, ISON,  “Joanna” will sound stripped-down, even bare. ISON weaved together R&B drums and genre-bending synthesizers into rich sonic tapestries. In contrast, the backing track of “Joanna” relies on simplicity. An acoustic guitar picks out three notes at a time, so that the beginning of each measure is full of silence, while brief electronic flourishes accent the end of phrases. “Evil personified/ She preys on the dead/ Desert woman/ Veiled in silence,” Sevdaliza sings, pitching her husky voice somewhere between a whisper and a moan. “Joanna” utilizes this stark imagery to paint a bleak picture of u...

100 gecs Throw a Backyard Rave on New “stupid horse” Remix: Stream

Earlier this month saw 100 gecs member Dylan Brady contribute extensively to how i’m feeling now, the quarantine album from Charli XCX. Now, 100 gecs proper are back with new material of their own: a remix of “stupid horse” featuring UK pop singer GFOTY and producer Count Baldor. Compared to the original version found on last year’s acclaimed 1000 gecs debut, today’s rework capitalizes further on the duo’s manic, off-the-wall brand of experimental, futurist pop. Guitar parts have been swapped out for shredder-like synths and the whole thing feels like a Blink-182 and Sleigh Bells mashup on the verge of implosion. Check out the remix below via an official video directed and edited by Weston Allen. As to be expected from 100 gecs’ Brady and Laura Les, it’s a bonkers watch filled wi...

How Kraftwerk and David Bowie Paved the Way for Music As We Know It Today

In 1976, David Bowie introduced his bravest new world yet. Zig-zagging across Europe and North America to promote his 10th studio album, Station to Station, he set the scene, night after night, with spliced footage from Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí’s surrealist masterpiece Un Chien Andalou. It was a strange yet enthralling scene for fans, but had the artist, then known as The Thin White Duke, had his way, four motionless Germans would have graced the stage instead. The request, of course, was made, but a firm yet friendly “nein danke” from Kraftwerk later led musical history to opt for another course. Midway through the Station to Station live run, also known as the “Isolar Tour”, Kraftwerk co-founders Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider met with Bowie at their Kling Klang Studio in their h...
