Garbage on 30 Years of Garbage, Touring with Tears For Fears and Alanis Morissette

Garbage are nearing the end of their extensive 2022 tour, which saw them supporting Tears For Fears on their The Tipping Point trek, as well as another leg of dates supporting Alanis Morissette on her Jagged Little Pill 20th anniversary shows. But the ’90s rockers have definitely not run out of steam; if anything, they’re completely in their element. Their show this month at Festival d’été de Québec was a perfect example of what they do best — not only were the tracks from their most recent 2021 album No Gods No Masters represented with passion and poise, their laundry list of hits sprinkled in throughout the set was a great demonstration of their enduring legacy. As lead vocalist Shirley Manson mentions in her recent episode of Consequence‘s The Story Behind The Song podcast, th...

Bruno Guimaraes – Price £6m Club – Newcastle Bruno Guimaraes joined Newcastle from Lyon in the January transfer window last season and it didn’t take him long to find his footing in the Premier League. The Brazilian defensive midfielder played a more advanced role under Eddie Howe and managed to bag himself five goals in eleven premier league games whilst also providing one assist. The midfielder will definitely be looking to make a fast start to the 2022/23 season. Bruno Guimaraes scored 67 points last season but bear in mind he joined halfway through.  Since his first start in #FPL...

Our Lollapalooza Guide from ’92 Was A Tribute To An Age of Grunge Innocence

On January 11, 1992, the gilded ramparts of the music establishment were certifiably leveled as Nirvana’s Nevermind knocked Michael Jackson’s Dangerous from the Billboard No. 1 album spot. Big-budget fashion also got grimy in ’92: Marc Jacobs unveiled a runway grunge collection, (painfully ironic considering the style is all about thrift store clothing). Kmart catalogs in Australia featured grunge-centric fashion offerings, with “Get into Grunge!” advert headlines. In September Cameron Crowe’s Seattle-set, flannel-ized Singlespacked movie theaters, selling millions of copies of its grunge soundtrack. And 1992 saw Perry Farell’s Lollapalooza festival barnstorm the nation again. What had begun the year prior as an epic farewell tour for his band Jane’s Addiction, inspired by a...

With the “ACT: LOVESICK” Tour, TOMORROW X TOGETHER Are Ready to Level Up

“We tried In & Out Burger!” says Hueningkai, the youngest member of TOMORROW X TOGETHER. Seated next to his bandmates in a suite in downtown Los Angeles, he’s recounting some of his favorite memories from their time in California in late July. “And Panda Express,” he and Yeonjun add in sync. The American experience is in full swing. Assembled comfortably like this the day after a sold-out show at the Microsoft Theater — the last in a string of entirely sold-out stateside dates — there’s a bit of an air of relief among the band, relaxed in each other’s company. But, more than that, the members of the K-pop quintet seem grateful. “In the beginning, we had doubts about whether we could really do this,” Taehyun shares. “But it ended really well.” Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun and Hueni...

When worlds collide: Joining Web3 and crypto from Web2

A friend of mine who is a seasoned Web2 tech executive joined a Web3 company in June. A switched-on operator, he asked to speak with all 16 staff before deciding to join the firm. This shows that Web3 joiners need to really hone in on the mission when jumping ship from the old tech world. Is the blockchain tech business model really plausible? You almost need to be a seasoned venture capitalist or world-class engineer when considering a new project’s potential to build a new L1 blockchain as promised — and, thus, deliver your token rewards. The risk-reward metrics mean there are opportunities for great success. But with great success comes great tax problems… Taking the leap from Web2 to Web3 is not for the fainthearted. “The first thing I see is that everyone in the space has an innovativ...

Metallica Took a Quantum Leap on Ride the Lightning

The first four Metallica albums are among the genre’s most powerful and enduring documents, and while the band’s debut LP, Kill ‘Em All, was a landmark for thrash metal, Ride the Lightning presented a quantum leap in terms of songwriting and structure. Kill ‘Em All leaned heavily on elements of boogie beats nabbed from ’70s Judas Priest and the heavy swung feel to fast-paced riffs that Dave Mustaine would eventually take with him to Megadeth, but Ride the Lightning, released July 27th, 1984, almost wholly struck the swung-boogie vibe from its mostly slower-paced riffs, focusing instead on a near neo-classical sense of grandeur plucked more from the pages of groups like Rush, Rainbow, Blue Öyster Cult and even Priest’s more grandiloquent epics than bands like Sweet or even the more rock ‘n’...

Sam Fender on First Mercury Prize Nomination, Summer Festivals, and “Bawling” Over Bruce Springsteen

It just keeps getting better for Sam Fender, one of England’s biggest songwriters. With his second album, the brilliant and personal Seventeen Going Under, released in November 2021, Fender cemented his place in the pantheon of great British songwriters, earning praise from Adele, Elton John, and many more in the process. And it didn’t stop there — since the release of Seventeen Going Under, Fender was awarded the prestigious Ivor Novello songwriting prize for “Best Song Musically and Lyrically,” supported The Rolling Stones at a show in London’s Hyde Park, headlined dozens of festivals around Europe, and, most recently, was nominated yesterday (July 26th) for the Mercury Prize, which awards the best album released in the UK. It’s clear that the personal and therapeutic direction of S...

Teenage Zola Jesus Read Cooler Books Than Any of Us

Book Club is a new monthly series from Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis, exploring the literature that inspires some of our favorite musicians. Whether it’s a music biography that got them through the slog of tour, the poetry collection that eked into their most poignant lyrics, or the novel that sparked a rock opera, we’ll get to the bottom of it so you can add it to the top of your book stack. This month, we speak to Nika Roza Danilova, the songwriter and producer behind Zola Jesus. Over her 14-year musical career, Zola Jesus’ Nika Roza Danilova has recorded and toured six ethereal albums touching on baroque pop, industrial goth, and art rock, including this June’s Arkhon. As I discovered while researching for our conversation, almost every interview she’s given along the way has included a h...

OFF!’s Cosmic Comeback

The man at the microphone is a sad wreck, slouched beneath a scruffy, colorless beard and filthy trucker’s cap, his stomach bulging beneath a loud Hawaiian shirt. His light blue slacks look like they date back to the Reagan era, and on the wall beside him is a collage of flying saucers, Bigfoot, Area 51, grain silos, pyramids, the Loch Ness Monster and other conspiracy obsessions. Then a sign lights up to announce: “On the Air.” It’s after midnight in Los Angeles as he leans over a laptop and says in a familiar, distinctive rasp: “Welcome back to another episode of Blowmind Show. I’m Keith, your host. My guest tonight is Jack Rogers. Jack was abducted and left with an implant in his leg.” The host is unrecognizable as Keith Morris, fiery dreadlocked singer for the hardcore supergroup OFF! ...

10 Times Players Tried To Force Transfers From Their Football Clubs

With Ronaldo returning to Carrington for training and a meeting with Ten Haag, the Dutchman is determined to keep him at the club. However, it’s still looking likely for Ronaldo to force a move amid concerns he’s unable to compete for the biggest trophies. Here’s the 10 most famous times players have forced a move away from their club. 10. Luka Modric: £30m (Tottenham to Real Madrid) Coming to the end of his third year at Spurs Luka Modric decided he wanted to seek a new club where he could challenge for the biggest trophies. This came of no surprise with Tottenham fans but the way he handled it definitely did.  After Daniel Levy rejected his move to Chelsea the Croatian refused to play in their first game of the 2010/11 season. He did return to the squad and made 42 appearances that ...

The Curse Of The Chelsea No9: Lukaku Latest Victim Of Doomed Shirt

Chelsea are yet to give a player the burden of their cursed no9 shirt for the coming season. We take a look at the players who have flopped while wearing the iconic number for the blues.  Tony Cascarino Looking into the past Tony Cascarino was Chelsea’s first no.9 of the Premier League era and he really set this curse on its way. Serving only two seasons at the club Cascarino bagged a sad total of 6 goals in both combined and the closest he came to a trophy was runner up of the 1993/94 FA Cup. Mateja Kezman Moving ten years on from Cascarino’s departure Mateja Kezman joined for the 2004/05 season and although this was a successful season for Jose Mourinho’s blues, Kezman didn’t have the same fate. Arriving from PSV for £6.75m Kezman managed to only score four goals in 25 games which f...

Rapper Papoose on the Power of Independence

I’ve graced magazine covers, starred in reality shows, toured in countless countries, and been on billboards around the world–all because of the gift I’ve been blessed with. Yet, I don’t take these blessings for granted. I know the music that has changed my life is the same rhythm that is reshaping the world we all live in. So, I make sure to create songs like “Monopoly,” “Law Library,” and other tracks that tell the full scope of the human experience, because I know the impact my voice can have, and I want to use it to teach and inspire. I began my career in the not-so-forgiving borough of Brooklyn. Although I always believed in my talent—self—releasing white-label singles and mixtapes for years—the gravitational pull of the streets had me on the verge of thr...
