Andrew Garfield and the Under the Banner of Heaven Cast on Navigating the “Rough Seas” of Mormonism and Murder

When writer Dustin Lance Black first approached adapting the Jon Krakauer book Under the Banner of Heaven, it was as a potential feature film — an idea that the star-studded cast of the new limited series from FX now sees as laughable. In fact, star Daisy Edgar-Jones literally laughs a little when talking to Consequence about it: “It would not be possible. This is such a rich story, there’s so much to unpack, and fitting that into an hour and a half would not happen.” Clocking in at seven episodes, Under the Banner of Heaven is a true crime story of the darkest sort, tracking the investigation into the murder of Brenda Lafferty (Edgar-Jones) and her infant daughter in 1984. Starring Andrew Garfield as lead detective Jeb Pyre, the motivation for these murders, we learn, is tied up in the fa...

How Austin Powers Made James Bond Take Itself Seriously Again

Upon its release in early May 1997, Mike Myers and Jay Roach’s Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery became a pop culture phenomenon. Born from Myers’ faux rock band, Ming Tea, it saw the Wayne’s World star employing his typical knack for quirky personas and clever parody to poke fun at 1960s British psychedelia and campy spy cinema. Consequently (and ironically), its irresistibly fun quips, characters, and look became a defining part of the late 1990s zeitgeist in America, England, and elsewhere. Primarily, International Man of Mystery — as well as its more successful, elaborate, and ridiculous sequels: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999) and Goldmember (2002) — was an affectionately astute and meticulously constructed send-up of the James Bond movies. In fact, Myers and company did such ...

Moderat Is Finding Itself Again

As Berliners with techno running through their veins, Moderat is all about how music makes you feel. Now, the electronic masters – formed of Apparat’s Sascha Ring and Modeselektor’s Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary – invite you into its world with the all-new Apple Music 1 radio show Moderat FM and upcoming fifth album, MORE D4TA. Moderat has commandeered underground basements, pumped abandoned buildings with bass and melted the brains of Coachella and Alexandra Palace’s dancing crowds. Subsequently, it has built not just a catalog of post-minimalist techno, but a soundtrack of dark yet intricate melodies that have altered the electronic music scene. Originally, Moderat was techno in its most palpable form, but today its work has allowed the trio to eschew a fixed genre or sound, favori...

How Hackers Get Your Passwords & How to Defend Yourself

Sourced from Travellers Despite the world’s best efforts to get everyone off passwords and onto something else (e.g., MFA, passwordless authentication, biometrics, zero trust, etc.) for decades, passwords have pervasively persisted. Today, nearly everyone has multiple forms of MFA for different applications and websites AND many, many passwords. The average person has somewhere between three to seven unique passwords that they share among over 170 websites and services. And, unfortunately, those passwords often get stolen or guessed. This is why I recommend the following password policy guide: Most computer security experts agree with these policy recommendations, but more than a few readers might be shaking their heads, especially at the recommendations to use 20+ character passwords/pass...

This Artist Reimagines Iconic Electronic Albums as Play-Doh Creations

Nolan Wall is harnessing his artistic gift with the pencil—and with Play-Doh. Wall, an aspiring Art Director and student at Michigan State University, is taking modeling with this colorful clay to the next level. Over the last several months, he’s reimagined some of the world’s most iconic album artworks in Play-Doh form and is building a multi-genre library of works. Sharing his art on social media, Wall has shared a variety of Play-Doh-based works. Many of them recreate classic albums that served to shape electronic music as it exists today, like Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon and Radiohead’s Kid A. More recently, Wall has paid tribute to more contemporary albums, including Porter Robinson‘s Nurture and Daft Punk‘s evergreen classic, Discovery. Scr...

Florence + the Machine Dazzles at Intimate Los Angeles Show: Recap + Setlist

Florence Welch is almost always moving when she performs. With the exception of the occasional sip of water or a dramatic pose at the end of each song, the bewitching British singer-songwriter is constantly on her feet, her body nimbly maximizing as much space on stage as humanly possible, all while singing with unshakable gusto. Many were lucky enough to both witness Welch’s captivating moves and hear her signature guttural mezzo-soprano alongside her backing band The Machine at the 2,000-capacity Los Angeles Theatre on Friday evening (April 29th), the first stop on her 2022 North American tour. Of course, Welch’s flailing, skipping, twirling, and air punching served more than just a function of spectacle. Florence + the Machine’s upcoming record Dance Fever (out May 13th) drew inspiratio...

Every Friday, Rap Song of the Week rounds up all the new hip-hop tracks you need to hear. Check out the full playlist here. Today, Future and Drake reunite on “WAIT FOR U.” After one of the longer breaks of his career, Future returned today with the declarative I Never Liked You, which naturally features a pair of appearances from his good friend Drake. “I’M ON ONE” — the second song Drake’s guested on with that exact title — is one of their more typical collaborations about the trappings of success, making the vulnerable “WAIT FOR U” the more compelling of the two tracks. It’s produced by Future’s frequent collaborator ATL Jacob, who sets the mood with a sample of “Higher” by rising Nigerian singer Tems. Stepping into his introspective Hendrix persona, Future raps about a woman ...

Joel Kim Booster on His Upcoming Netflix Special and Making History With Fire Island

This article is part of our coverage of the 2022 Netflix Is a Joke: The Festival. It’s really about to be Joel Kim Booster’s time — as he tells Consequence, “June is going to be a big big month for me.” The comedian wrote and stars in the groundbreaking Hulu romantic comedy Fire Island on June 3rd, will appear in the Apple TV+ series Loot, premiering June 24th, and Netflix just announced that his first-ever hour-long comedy special, Joel Kim Booster: Psychosexual, will debut on June 21st. It’s a lot, and a situation which he says is a bit of a “monkey’s paw situation,” because of his dedication to stand-up; right now, he’s in a “rebuilding phase” with his work on stage after filming Psychosexual: “I’m just sort of writing a lot of new material and testing out a lot of new stuff. It’s reall...

It could only come from the minds of Rammstein, who never fail to deliver bombastic visuals to accompany their equally maximal songs. Advertisement “Angs...

Not Your Average Joe

The comedian Joe List is set to premiere his newest special, entitled This Year’s Material, on his popular YouTube channel, continuing a trend of DIY releases, such as Mark Normand’s Out to Lunch, Shane Gillis’s Live in Austin, as well as List’s own excellent 2020 set I Hate Myself. Each of those specials have garnered millions of views, not due to any sort of controversial material that would attract otherwise disinterested lookie-loos, but from hundreds of hours of road-tested material that has captured the attention of those of us only interested in punchlines. It is the opinion of this writer that Joe List is, pound-for-pound, the best working stand-up comic in America. His self-deprecating nature (“I Hate Myself” is both a title and common phrase for List) belies a novelistic detail f...

Rock Star Astrology: Happy May Birthday to Bono, Rico Nasty, Tom Morello, Stevie Nicks & Lenny Kravitz

Your “It’s Gonna Be May” Forecast: Ice Cube’s “Your Money or Your Life” is the theme song this month. May opens right after the first eclipse of 2022 and we are deep into Taurus bull territory. It’s all about values: skills, talents and how to use yours. After all, Taurus is the original show-me-the-money sign. Time is money and money is power. As Pink Floyd once sang: Don’t give me that do goody good bullshit. Money—that’s what we want. Maybe your lesson is: “You can’t take it with you.” Or maybe it’s: “There is more to life than money.” One thing’s for sure, all of us are getting schooled about our worth and how we spend time, energy and resources. Watch for Mercury Retrograde May 9 – June 3and practice the “RE” words: renew, restore, refresh, re-evaluate, rest, read, renovate, reor...
