Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres Is Completely Oblivious to Its Own Plight

On “Trouble In Town,” the third track on Coldplay’s 2019 LP Everyday Life, the band places a rather disturbing sound clip of a police officer rudely interrogating someone — this comes after Chris Martin’s solemn lament on unequal power structures and how they always “add more police,” and before a full-band psychedelic freak out of an outro, which is not necessarily what you’d associate with Coldplay. This was not an anomaly on the record; Everyday Life featured Coldplay at their most experimental, their most vital, and playing the riskiest music they’ve made in years. But what’s more, is that it sounded like Coldplay had changed, that over a span of 20 years as a band, they were almost more weathered and rugged. Fast forward to two years later; Coldplay have released their ninth studio al...

Song of the Week: Adele Confirms the Arrival of Sad Girl Autumn with “Easy On Me”

Song of the Week breaks down and talks about the song we just can’t get out of our head each week. Find these songs and more on our Spotify Top Songs playlist. For our favorite new songs from emerging artists, check out our Spotify New Sounds playlist. This week, Adele breaks her lengthy hiatus with an extremely on-brand ballad. What is it that separates a moody piano ballad from an Adele song? Is it the undeniable vocals? The reflective nature of the lyrics, nostalgic and sad? The overwhelming desire to suddenly go stand outside in the rain? It’s probably all of the above, and with “Easy On Me,” Adele takes it easy on absolutely no one — not the listeners, and not herself. The record-breaking vocalist has shared that her upcoming album is entitled 30, and the only thing truly surprising a...

Rap Song of the Week: Young Thug Remembers the “Day Before” with Mac Miller

Every week, our new music feature Rap Song of the Week breaks down our favorite rap tracks of the week. Check out the full playlist here. Today, Young Thug shares his posthumous Mac Miller collaboration “Day Before.” Young Thug just released his second official studio album Punk today (October 15th), and like most major hip-hop releases, it’s chock full of features. Drake, J. Cole, Travis Scott, Future, and A$AP Rocky all drop off guest verses, but Mac Miller’s posthumous appearance on “Day Before” stands above the rest. Thugger kicks off the track with a shoutout to Snoop Dogg before going into tales of self-defense (“I ain’t tryna give him a chance to kill me or take the stand on me”) and a relationship gone bad (“I had feelings for this girl that barely owned a residence”). Ho...

Interview Tips for DJs From Veteran Music Journalist, Kat Bein

Whether you’re a new DJ on the scene or a veteran music producer, taking interviews about the music you make is weird. It’s uncomfortable and awkward. In fact, for most people, talking about yourself is. In interview settings, it’s not too challenging to see why sharing a homegrown song requires confidence, vulnerability, and even a little courage. Strangely though, not much in the way of written guidance exists out there for musicians, particularly in dance music. How then should they navigate these encounters? What are some ways interviews go wrong? We sat down with Kat Bein, a quirky and skilled music journalist with an exhaustive list of legends along her career path, to lay the groundwork for what we believe is a much-needed guide for DJs. Bein has chatted with Boys Noi...

With Juno, Remi Wolf Signals That the Future of Pop Music Is Already Here

“Remi Wolf is a crazy bih but is also hella nice and sweet sometimes but also likes to yell at people but has figured out that maybe instead of yelling at people she can just sing.” This is the description that greets users who visit Remi Wolf’s official Spotify artist page. It’s not an inaccurate first impression for people who might be new to our October Artist of the Month, Remi Wolf. She’s arrived on the indie-pop scene in a neon and rainbow-drenched burst and has become something of a festival darling over the past year. Active social media users probably heard her track “Photo ID” on TikTok, but Wolf’s budding discography is much more than the viral hit may have suggested. Juno, her debut full-length album, is an odyssey through a world of oddities. In a recent interview with Consequ...

Adele’s 10 Best Songs

It’s sometimes surprising to remember just how long Adele has been part of the pop culture conversation. Her breakout, “Hometown Glory,” was released when she was only nineteen years old, and it’s a track the singer-songwriter penned at just sixteen. Since then, Adele has obliterated records to the tune of fifteen Grammy awards across three full-length studio albums. Her crossover appeal is the result of a unique mix of gifted vocals, vulnerable songwriting, and a personality overflowing with sharp wit. It’s been over five years now since Adele released new music — a curious stint as host of Saturday Night Live in 2020 was more of an opportunity for the vocalist to try her hand at comedy and acting than it was a hint of a musical comeback — but finally, new tunes from Adele are on the hori...

Twitter Reacts to Brooklyn Nets Banning Kyrie Irving From Playing Until Vaccinated

After the Brooklyn Nets made the official announcement of banning their star guard Kyrie Irving from playing or practicing with the team, fans took to Twitter to give their own opinions on the situation. While the Nets’ General Manager Sean Marks revealed in the statement that the team supports Irving’s decisions, it appears that not all fans are content with the way this has played out. The situation has left many NBA supporters divided, with some showing their support to Irving while others have made jokes. In the past, Irving has not officially commented on the matter and has often avoided directly answering questions surrounding his vaccination status as he said he would rather keep these matters private. His decision has seemingly affected the Nets’ roster and has led fans to take pol...

The Collector

When Larry Cohn, 89, started collecting blues records in the 1940s and 1950s, little was written about the records, few had been reissued, and sometimes finding out what some even sounded like necessitated visiting with the owners of individual 78s—often the “only known copy.” In Cohn’s case these meetings were often with the “blues mafia,” a group of New York City area collectors who would eventually provide dubs of their rare discs for reissues on small specialist labels, many of which they ran themselves. A long-time resident of L.A., Cohn still has the massive collection of records he’s acquired over his long life, and among the thousands of 78s are about 350 test pressings of alternative takes from pre-World War II sessions, many of which have never been issued. Like his friends in th...

The Best Episode of Community Turns 10 Today

Before anyone can protest, we get it: “Modern Warfare” (Season 1, Episode 23) is a television masterpiece. “Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas” (Season 2, Episode 11) is a prime example of the risk-taking that made Community so beloved. “Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking” (Season 2, Episode 16) with Levar Burton is the ship that launched a thousand Donald Glover memes. Community premiered on September 17, 2009 and quickly amassed a small but vocal following — the rallying cry of “six seasons and a movie” still echoes through Twitter timelines to this day. The Dan Harmon community college ensemble show has become something of a cult classic and found another wave of fans when the series landed on Netflix in 2020. Anyway, we’re here because a decade ago today (October 13th), the best episode ...
