Heavy music veterans Monster Magnet just released A Better Dystopia, a 13-track “DIY” covers album featuring fringe and underrated artists including Hawkwind, Poo-Bah, The Scientists and Morgen. We asked MM singer Dave Wyndorf to riff on some “then and now” music and culture musings, and he kindly obliged. Read what he had to say below. I was a kid in the late ’60s and early ’70s, and believe me, those years were a specific kind of crazy. The shadow of nuclear Armageddon, the war in Vietnam, the Manson murders, Altamont, the Kent State shootings, racial tensions, a steady stream of civil unrest and LSD selling at 50 cents a hit in public schools were just a few of the things that made those times a grownup’s paranoid nightmare. The media roared “Dystopia! Apocalypse! Revolution!...
If you’re considering a 2021 Honda CR-V, you’re in good company. The fifth-generation CR-V was crowned MotorTrend’s 2018 SUV of the Year for its roomy, well-built interior, solid driving dynamics, and great feature-per-dollar value. A midcycle refresh for 2020 simplified trim levels and introduced a hybrid version. If you’ve decided on the CR-V but need to know which one is ideal for your needs, have a look at our trim guide below. The most notable change Honda made on the 2020 CR-V was standardizing the 1.5-liter turbocharged I-4 across every trim level. This means you get 190 hp and 179 lb-ft of torque even in the base LX trim. FWD is standard on the base model starting at around $26,500; AWD is available for an additional $1,500. Every CR-V also includes the Hond...
Ford says the new F-150 Lightning EV pickup is the smartest truck the company has ever made. It also happens to have the full weight of Ford’s electric future riding on its battery-laden frame. Sure, the Mach-E was a nice place to start, but the electric F-150 is the true litmus test for Ford. Can Dearborn build an electric truck that’s authentic to the brand’s heritage, equally as capable as its gas counterparts, and appealing to hardcore truck fans? Only time will tell. A major piece of that puzzle is how much all this newness will cost, and for that we turn to Ford’s official MSRP of two of the Lightning’s trims. The first (and cheaper of the two) is a commercial model that starts at $41,669. The consumer-oriented Lightning XLT will be priced from $54,669. ...

In this special edition, Adam Duritz of Counting Crows shares his picks. Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz spends much of his time devouring new music. “There’s this record store in London that Immer [Counting Crows guitarist David Immerglück] and I would visit every time we were on tour in England,” he recalls to Consequence over Zoom. “We would spend one to two full days in that store. They would play us stuff we had never heard and we would buy everything.” The UK holds a special place in Duri...
Over the past year or so, digital transformation accelerated at an unprecedented rate in societies around the world. Whether we were working, learning, or staying in touch with friends and family, being online became more critical than ever. Even as vast numbers of people were adapting to their new realities, it became increasingly apparent that equally large numbers of people were shut out from being able to do so. In Sub-Saharan Africa, for example, approximately 800-million people are not connected to the mobile internet. Of those, some 520-million can access the mobile internet but don’t, because of factors such as smartphone penetration and lack of skills while 270-million cannot access the mobile internet because they don’t have the requisite coverage. Across the region, 4G broadband...
With a population just shy of 2,000, the tiny Louisiana town of Bernice is about as far away as you can get from New Orleans and still live in the Pelican State. Somewhere on a Sunday, in a small Southern church, Robert Finley is singing to a faithful crowd. Now in his 67th year, and with his new album Sharecropper’s Son out May 21, the soul singer’s musical journey circles back to his church-going roots, and the history that gave him the ability to compose one of the finest albums of the year. After not advancing to the 2019 America’s Got Talent finals—thanks to Simon, who got a rightful, earnest booing from the crowd—Finley’s music set out on its next great adventure. It features half a dozen popular recurring characters alongside a performance from Paul Simon, one of the show’s most frequent musical guests. Multiple clips from this episode will be especially familiar to anyone who has caught up with old SNL bits through compilations: A Coneheads Halloween sketch and a segment on unsafe costumes produced by sleazy entrepreneur Irwin Mainway (Dan Aykroyd) were both in heavy Halloween rotation for years; the e...

Operating in a genre dominated by men, it’s two women who are propelling the engine of freeform electronic music from behind the scenes. Chloe Suit and Emily Mitchell helm Wakaan as its Marketing Director and Merchandise Director, respectively. Wakaan was launched in 2015 by famed bass music producer and entrepreneur Liquid Stranger, or Martin Stääf, who has since grown the organization into a powerhouse record label and music festival proprietor. And with two innovative, tough-as-nails women driving the brand, it has mutated from an unknown electronic neophyte into a global music and culture hub. Chloe Suit (L) and Emily Mitchell (R) of Wakaan. c/o Wakaan Sadly, Suit and Mitchell are outliers in their roles. A September 2019 survey conducted by the Association for Electronic Music (...
Google is introducing a new feature to Google Photos that lets you hide specific pictures so they won’t show up in your photo feed or in other apps. The feature, called Locked Folder, will put whatever sensitive pictures you’d rather not share behind a password. In its I/O presentation, Google used the example of parents trying to keep a puppy purchase secret from their kids — though the feature should be useful for any sensitive images that you don’t want to share with others. It’s easy to see how this feature could be useful: who hasn’t handed their phone to someone to show off one or two pictures, then suddenly realized, “Wow, I hope they don’t scroll too far to the left or right”? Locked Folder will help Photos users avoid that fear by keeping whatever sensitive pictures you’ve got on ...
In the cutting-edge world of NFTs there’s almost no greater compliment than to call a piece “timeless.” In their perennial pursuit of value and utility, NFT creators and collectors alike constantly question what combination of creative and immutable qualities have the ability to leave a lasting impact. Given the feverish mainstream interest in the space, most NFT (non-fungible token) projects have borne little meaning beneath their superficial qualities. However, every once in awhile, a project with the organic confluence of superior design, noble intention, and historical relevance comes along. The rise in popularity of digital collectibles immediately grabbed Aloe Blacc‘s attention, and soon the Grammy-nominated artist became consumed with an idea that had t...
