‘None of Us Thought We’d Be Doing Thursday 20 Years Later’: Geoff Rickly on Two Decades of Full Collapse

On April 10, 2001, Thursday released Full Collapse on Victory Records. At the time, a handful of punk and alternative publications thought the New Jersey-based rockers might be on to something, but mainstream outlets like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork found it to be underwhelming and confusing. It sold under 1,000 copies the week of its release and caused an insurmountable divide between the band and the label. Just under a year later, Full Collapse landed on the Billboard 200 (peaking at No. 178) and Thursday had become undeniably one of the biggest influences on the rising emo scene that would soon take over the rock world. Their commercial success was just beginning, with “Understanding in a Car Crash” continuing to grow in popularity both within and beyond the Warped Tour ...

How Fast Was Tiger Woods Driving Before His Crash?

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department held a news conference today with updates on star golfer Tiger Woods’ single-vehicle crash on February 23 and revealed his Genesis GV80 SUV hit a top speed of 87 mph during the incident. The department blamed pedal misapplication (pressing the gas instead of the brake in a moment of panic), unsafe speed, and an inability to negotiate the curve in the road. The posted speed limit is 45 mph. Woods was driving northbound on Hawthorne Boulevard in the city of Rolling Hills Estates in a Genesis GV80 luxury SUV at the time of the crash. This section of road is a steep downhill that sheriff’s representatives called out as having an abnormally high number of crashes due to speeding. A Modern Chevy Silverado 454 SS? Here’s What It Would Look Like

We love the classic Chevrolet 454 SS, but even the staunchest fans will admit that the other muscle trucks of the day—Ford’s F-150 Lightning, the smaller but wilder GMC Syclone—had it beat on actual muscle. Sure, biggest engine in the lightest body style is a time-honored formula, but the torquey 454 truck motor wasn’t as special as its rivals. For cool factor, though, the 454 SS packed plenty, and a bit of mystique, too. After all, Chevy hasn’t built a follow-up, a true muscle truck—although the 2003 Chevy Silverado SS came close. So, what would a modern 454 SS look like? We asked talented artist Abimelec Arellano imagine just that, and to hew as close as possible to the original design in doing so. Single-cab pickups are a nonstarter in today’s truck market, but t...

Almost 50% of South Africans Will Avoid a Service Provider Following a Data Breach, Research Shows

Nearly half of South African consumers (46%) would walk away from an online service provider if it suffered any form of data breach, according to a global study by Kaspersky. The idea of avoidable data misuse is likely to incur even greater wrath from respondents, however, with 68% affirming they would no longer use the provider for fear of their data being sold to a third party in this case. As consumers understand more about businesses’ data privacy responsibilities, more transparency is needed from those companies about how they handle user data. Having to shop, be entertained, communicate and conduct business virtually is likely to have sparked heightened awareness about how much data is being offered, and what the upshots of this proliferation could be. Over two-thirds (67%) of respon...

2022 Toyota GR 86 and Subaru BRZ: What Are the Differences?

If you’re foaming at the mouth to launch jabs at joint ventures like the Toyota 86 and mechanically identical Subaru BRZ, which are nakedly co-developed and are entering their second iteration, take a moment to think about the upside. From a business perspective, sports cars such as these—along with the Toyota Supra and BMW Z4, the products of a similar Toyota-BMW partnership—wouldn’t exist otherwise. Automakers leaning on one another to help minimize development costs and sharing the workload makes fun, low-profit-margin cars like the 2022 GR 86 and BRZ a reality, even if they turn out quite similar. And turn out they have. Late last year Subaru teased, then unveiled its 2022 BRZ, which featured an updated look with more aggressive angles and a freshened front fascia, and sinc...

3 Steps to Effectively Organise Healthcare Data

Sourced from TTEC.com As healthcare organisations scrambled to cope with huge surges in patient numbers in the wake of the pandemic, the past year has seen a major change in the adoption of technology and digital services. According to research by Aruba, a HPE company, as of last year the healthcare sector was among the furthest ahead in terms of its adoption of advanced technologies and the sense of urgency it felt around this. A third (33%) of IT leaders in healthcare&nb...

Is a V-6 Chevy Camaro Rental Faster than Roadkill’s Fleet?

Last time on Roadkill, Mike Finnegan and David Freiburger lived their ultimate Mullholland-racer dreams with the Super Camaro road trip up the California coast to the world-famous Laguna Seca Raceway. They didn’t drive all the way from Tucson Dragway for nothing, though. It’s time to see how the Super Camaro stacks up against its modern sibling: A 2020 Chevy Camaro V-6 rental car.  Renting a world-class racing facility like Laguna Seca ain’t cheap, though, so it’s not just going to be Camaro-on-Camaro action this time. Finnegan and Freiburger have brought every race car the Roadkill fleet has to offer—the ones that are currently running, that is—which means it’s just NASCARlo and the ever un-trustworthy Rotsun (sad trombone). You might be thinking, “...

Why South Africa Needs Fibre to Drive 5G Connectivity

5G is paving the way forward for the connectivity that digital technologies increasingly require, but it offers a lot more than just unprecedented mobile data connection speeds. 5G is capable of handling many more connected devices, has ten times lower latency than 4G, and enables ‘network slicing’ which can prioritise specific users, services, or devices during times of network overload. With all these benefits, it’s no surprise that many people have the misconception that 5G will ultimately replace fibre, when in fact 5G without fibre would not exist. The 5G mobile network is currently being rolled out in South Africa and will still take a few years to become widely available. Even then, 5G networks will not eventually replace fibre optic networks but rather complement them by offering m...

How AI Puts the ‘Smart’ in Smartphones

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a wide-ranging branch of computer science concerned with building smart devices capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. From the realm of science fiction, AI has evolved to, in some applications, match human performance, with the latest facial-recognition software having a 99% accuracy rate. Strategy Analytics, a company that shares insights and analytics, states that 41% of consumers believe AI will improve their lives in some way and South Africa isn’t lagging behind the rest of the world in its development and application of this cutting-edge technology either. “We’re seeing even more companies using AI in more daring ways through innovative products or services that disrupt the status quo,’ says Dries Cronje, CEO at Deep Le...
