This year, the team at EDM.com is proud to publish four installments of “Best of 2020” coverage: Industry Leaders, Performances, Music Producers, and Songs. With no venues to perform at in 2020, it seemed at times as if artists simply blindfolded their eyes, threw a dart at a map, and travelled to places to perform—locations that are usually pipe dreams. However, due to the dogged fury of COVID-19 and the surge of streaming, these pie-in-the-sky destinations became the new norm for DJs who wanted to connect with fans in the absence of tours. To honor their creativity and seminal influences on the live music industry, we’ve recognized ten of the year’s best performances in dance music. RÜFÜS DU SOL Live from Joshua Tree Filmed in late 2019 and released in ...

In a corner of Eastern Europe — far, far away from the glitz, glam and flex selfies of U.S. trap — three fierce women are smashing conceptions and changing a genre that’s emerged as one of the most popular in the world. They don’t give a fuck about your standards, stereotypes or anything else. P0LLY, BRUJA, BRASOV: the loud voices carving out the Romanian female trap scene. With an indisputable punk ethos, goth aesthetics and mosh-loaded concerts, they’ve long surpassed the restrictive “trap” label altogether. Toying with gore and fetishism, leaping from trap to heavy metal — often within the same track — P0LLY embodies the duality that drives her eclectic sound. Aggressive guitar riffs and growls, explosive visuals, blood, sex, vulnerability, chaos: That complexity fuels P0LLY singles lik...
“The ACLU may not want it advertised, but this record is pornographic; that’s one of the good things about it.” – Robert Christgau BY 1989, Miami rap group The 2 Live Crew’s ultimately double-platinum album As Nasty As They Wanna Be was quickly climbing the hip-hop charts. The lead single, “Me So Horny” was a crossover hit. Their unique blend of Southern rap and “party record” comedy bits had expanded well beyond their core audience of Southern Blacks. The vulgar lyrics and booty-shaking dances had infiltrated the white suburbs. Mothers were appalled to hear their kids’ mouth couplets such as, “You said it yourself, you like it like I do/Put your lips on my dick, and suck my asshole, too.” With pearls thoroughly clutched, those mothers turned to conservative and Christian leaders to s...
2020 was a year that tested the strength of the dance music industry. Yes—it was downright awful—but the year also reinforced the resilience of the EDM community, forcing its members to unlock upsurges of creativity that would’ve otherwise remained latent. The unrelenting fury of COVID-19 flung the EDM world—and the live music scene at large—into a free-fall with no parachute. Without the ability to tour, artists, event promoters, venue operators, and practically every music pro found themselves scrambling to acclimate to the new norm. Ultimately, the electronic music space mutated into a socially distanced, Frankenstein-like monstrosity of drive-in shows, quasi-legal raves, and virtual festivals. But even in a year to forget, it remained as captivating as ever. As we count down...

Nissan seems to understand the importance of preserving important Skyline models, like the R32-generation one seen here, before it’s too late. That’s why the company recently launched an extensive restoration program through its NISMO division, as was first spotted by Japanese Nostalgic Car. Extensive enough to justify the cost, which is a few hundred thousand dollars? Let’s take a closer look and see. Remember, not too long ago Nissan announced it was putting some hard-to-find parts for R32 Skyline GT-Rs back into production. And the prices of Skyline GT-Rs are hitting new heights, too. This seems like the next logical step, producing like-new versions of classic Skylines replete with special build plates and an impeccable pedigree, for a suitable sum. And it’...
Almost a decade after its release, “Titanium” still hits different. Months after “Never Gonna Give You Up” singer Rick Astley breathed life into the dance classic, a Fresno homeowner named Jordan Willis has now used David Guetta and Sia‘s iconic track as the soundtrack to an epic light show this holiday season. Willis, who has been meticulously decking out the home for half a year, gave the song’s inescapable refrain of “fire away, fire away” new meaning with a grandiose display of 12,000 dancing lights. An unquestionable highlight is the show’s smiley LED Christmas tree installment, which has eyes and a mouth that actually sings along to the lyrics. Check out the light show below. Through his Lights on Dovewood ...
