In 2017 and 2018, the momentum of the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements swelled to an ineluctable peak. The entertainment industry came to a screeching halt as film, television and music production companies reckoned with the blatant sexism rampant throughout their workplaces—and the dangerous circumstances such inequity can produce. The spotlight is now turning to EDM with the release of a new feature-length documentary called Underplayed. Featuring interviews with women and several male allies working in all aspects of the industry, including sound engineers, producers, journalists and major artists, the film offers timely insights into just how much work is left to be done in electronic music. Of 2019’s top 100 DJs, only five were women, according to the film̵...
Ford’s rounded 1995 Explorer was still nearly a year away from launch in 1994, but the Blue Oval’s Power Stroke concept pickup gave clues to the company’s styling directive for the cars, trucks, and SUVs it planned to sell to consumers throughout the latter half of the 1990s. Besides showcasing the brand’s forthcoming design language, the Power Stroke housed Ford’s upcoming turbo-diesel 7.3-liter V-8 engine, which would soon make its way to production bearing the—wait for it—Power Stroke moniker. Despite its show-car status, the Power Stroke concept was surprisingly road-ready. Riding on a modified heavy-duty truck frame and featuring an interior cribbed from an F-Series pickup of the era, the truck’s only true conceptual elements lived on its yello...

While next weekend’s Halloween celebrations probably won’t be as exciting as other years due to the ongoing health crisis, that doesn’t mean we can’t get into the spirit. Many of our favorite electronic artists have released horror-themed music in honor of the holiday while others have embraced the aesthetic full-time. Either way, they’ve provided us with the perfect soundtracks for haunted house parties, spooky festivals, and beyond. In honor of the upcoming holiday, we created a poll to see what your favorite terrifying tune is. Put on your costume, consult your Ouija board, and tell us your favorites in the poll below.
Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington had had it. For what felt like the hundredth time, Good Charlotte and Dashboard Confessional producer Don Gilmore ordered the Linkin Park lyricists back to the lounge space inside North Hollywood’s NRG Recording Studios to craft new lines for “One Step Closer” — which would end up being the lead single off of their debut album Hybrid Theory. “Chester and I would sit together, at a computer, typing stuff out, and then, print it out for us to sing in the studio,” Shinoda explains to SPIN. “Don would look at it, and he’d just shake his head. ‘No, no — that’s not it.’ And we were like, ‘Dude, you didn’t even fucking listen to us sing it!’ He’d go, ‘Look at the words. You can sing it to me if you want, but you can do better than that.’ We were so f...
Before the Great Recession threw a wrench in its plans, General Motors seemed intent on competing in the affordable sports car segment with its rear-drive Kappa platform beyond the short-lived Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky (as well as international variants of the latter from the likes of Opel and Daewoo). Thanks to the market crash, we’ll never really know what would have been. That said, we do know the company teased the possibility of a small two-door wagon for the Chevrolet brand at the 2004 Detroit auto show. Christened the Nomad, the rear-drive concept drew some inspiration from the Corvette-based concept car that donned the same name a half of a century earlier (and less from the Camaro-based 1999 Nomad concept). Harnessing a persona as exotic and malleable as his ever-changing sound, Diplo has ascended to the pinnacle of EDM as one of its most fascinating characters. He is one of the most mercurial artists in the scene, constantly tightroping the wire between enigmatic and overt. However, whether he’s producing twangy country bops, ambient stargazing lullabies, or wonky trap bangers, his sound consistently remains tucked in a bedrock of dance music. The curious case of Diplo may never be solved, but that’s not a bad thing. Our beloved dance music community needs someone like him—a virtuoso who keeps us on our toes and single-handedly colorizes the vibrant palette of EDM with each eccentric tweet or genre-bending song. To home in on one of the true Renaissance men in electronic mu...
General Motors is blunt about it. The 2022 GMC Hummer EV, a full-size electric pickup, raced from computer screens to production at mach speed to compete with plans by Tesla, Rivian, and others to build an electric trucks of their own. GMC Hummer EV chief engineer Al Oppenheiser, who spent most of his career developing Camaros, said 20 months ago he was asked by GM leadership to bring Camaro charisma to the electric vehicle program to give it an adrenaline shot to better combat the 2021 Tesla Cybertruck and 2021 Rivian R1T, both of which had created a lot of buzz. (Not to be outdone, Ford is developing an electric F-150.) Oppenheiser’s work began in April 2019 on a full-size truck GM wanted in production in the fall of 2021. In other words, lop about two years off GM’s normal d...
Music and sports are connected in their ability to bring people together. At the crux of the two—and likely the outright center of attention—is now-retired basketball icon and current mainstage festival DJ, Shaquille O’Neal. While a casual fan may only be familiar with his Hall of Fame NBA career, diehards of the legend know he’s anything but one-dimensional. His passion drove him to carry out one of the greatest careers in NBA history, but when the lights at the arena went out, O’Neal often sought out his second love: music. DJ Diesel first began to learn how to mix music back in 1988 while attending and playing basketball at Cole High School in San Antonio, Texas. DJing excited people and brought in an audience, so he gravitated towards what he does best: entertain. This hobb...
