Why Africa Needs to Take Advantage of the Cloud

Sourced from ZDNet. As a unified online platform for communication and collaboration, the cloud is now widely considered to be one of the most valuable resources we have at our disposal. It’s reported that by the end of 2020, 82% of workloads globally will reside on the cloud and more than 40 zettabytes of data will be flowing through cloud servers and networks. If African businesses are to take advantage of the opportunities that the cloud will present in the next decade, there are some key numbers we should all be paying attention to: 402.5 GB That’s how much data European and American broadband subscribers used on average every month during the first quarter of 2020. This reflects an increase of 47% in broadband data usage from the first quarter of 2019 to the first quarter of 2020. Of ...

4 Trends Shaping the Healthcare Industry in 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has led the headlines in defining the challenge facing our healthcare systems this year – says Dr Ryan Noach, CEO of Discovery Health. “We have closely followed and analysed the local and global trajectory of the pandemic and have identified a tipping point for healthcare consumers to access healthcare differently, revealing opportunities for greater efficiencies in the future.” Four key trends have emerged as currently dominant in shaping the healthcare industry: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted typical healthcare patterns and created discontinuity in the supply and demand of healthcare services. The global focus on patient-centric care is driving demand for improved quality of care and healthcare outcomes. Providers and consumers are increasingly leveraging digit...

Scrap the Small-Block V-8 Swap and Sub in This Literal Tesla Crate Motor

The term “crate engine” has long been used to describe engines you could buy (typically hotted-up or modified) and install in the car or project of your choosing. Why the name, though? Because the engines ship in crates. Often, the word “engine” is used interchangeably with the word “motor,” a casual oversight of the distinction between an internal-combustion engine and a motor, which we typically use to describe an electric power source. Until now. Go ahead and call EV West’s Revolt Systems Tesla electric powertrain swap what it is: A crate motor. Literally, that’s what this wonderful creation is. A crated electric motor. Even better, it’s a bolt-in setup gunning to replace one of the most common crate engine choices out there, GM...

Pathwaves Music Production Camp for Women and Nonbinary Artists Slated for November

Placing a much-needed spotlight on marginalized identities in the music industry, a Berlin-based music program called Pathwaves is offering a production camp this November for women and nonbinary folks. Sponsored by Ableton and APRA AMCOS, an Australia-based music rights organization, the program will take place November 2nd to 6th, with some events streamed for attendees located outside of Berlin.  Acceptance into the program will occur via an application process closing October 5th. Selected participants—primarily engineers and producers—will be invited to create work in a professional studio during the camp, where they’ll be mentored on technical skills through masterclasses and hands-on experiences. “The layered set-up of Pathwaves takes its inspiration from ...

Netsky on New Album “Second Nature,” His Return to Hospital Records, and More [Interview]

Ten years ago, a rising drum & bass star called Netsky released his self-titled album debut on Hospital Records, and fans weren’t been able to get enough since. The release of his sophomore effort, 2, propelled Netsky even further into the spotlight, but when the next album in the number sequence was released (and not on Hospital Records), a schism formed between drum & bass purists and fans of Netsky’s more experimental, pop-infused offerings.  In April of this year, however, naysayers were silenced as Netsky released a new drum & bass single via Hospital, “I See The Future In Your Eyes.” That single was followed by “Mixed Emotions “(feat. Montell2099),” and those two tracks were just the beginning of the talen...

“Dance, Drink, and Die” in This Trippy Video Game Blending Rave Culture and Horror

Gaming and dance music simply can’t be separated. Swedish indie video game developer Green Title Digital is well aware of the cohesion, preparing to release a one-of-a-kind experience with their forthcoming video game Strobophagia: Rave Horror. Strobophagia: Rave Horror is a psychedelic survival horror game set in—you guessed it—an electronic dance music festival. The protagonist, originally attending in search of the ultimate freedom of expression, is tasked with escaping the festival after the organizers inform attendees that the price of admission is their lives. The player must solve puzzles and interact with their intuitive in-game smartphone feature to survive and escape through an ominous, neon-soaked forest. As you may have already deduced, music will play a pivotal...

Bartees Strange on Blurring Genres, Feeling Cursed, Crafting Debut LP

“If I died in a meadow, I don’t think they’d ever find me at all,” Bartees Strange belts on “Stone Meadows,” a cathartic indie-rock centerpiece from his debut LP, Live Forever. It’s a grim thought — but one that often crossed his mind as a young Black person in his native Oklahoma. “I knew people who died, and no one found them,” he tells SPIN. “I’m Black, and I grew up in the country. And I remember being afraid — if something happens to me, if this cop doesn’t like me, if these boys chasing me home don’t leave me alone, no one’s gonna find me. And it’s like a really dark way to live your life: knowing that, no matter what, no matter how successful you are, how much money you make, how many people know you, you can still literally be disappeared off the face of the Earth. That’s kind...

Kid A Reaches Adulthood: Radiohead’s Mesmerizing Fourth Record Turns 20

A little over three years after releasing their atmospheric masterpiece OK Computer, Radiohead set the tone for the rest of their career with Kid A: a radical and beautifully bizarre collection that relied less on guitars, more on fragmented electronics and ambient experimentation. As writer Zev Borow observed in SPIN’s November 2000 issue, Radiohead’s fourth LP was the most anticipated rock album since Nirvana’s In Utero. But Radiohead did little to promote it, eschewing press interviews and promotional photoshoots. Critics weren’t provided with advanced copies, and there wasn’t a music video. In a clear sign of the times, Kid A was leaked on Napster three weeks ahead of its release — shocking an unsuspecting public with its beguiling rhythms. With Kid A, released 20 years ago today, Radi...

Robert Plant’s Absolute, Invaluable Journey

I’ve met Robert Plant four times. First as a punky grade-schooler, sitting cross-legged on my friend’s worn-out shag carpet, carefully slipping LPs out of their dust jackets for fear her older sister will wring our necks for touching her records. Houses of the Holy, Led Zeppelin IV, I, II. Aside from not leaving fingerprints on the pristine black vinyl, there were other rules, too. The music was best played as loud as possible, the lyrics must be memorized and analyzed—“a hedgerow is a row of shrubs…” — and, when we got old enough to have boyfriends, this would be the music we would totally make out to. Not a few years later as a preadolescent, I met Robert Plant again. This time, thanks to MTV. There was no way to make a cognitive connection between this man and the one who screeched abou...

Watch Touché Amoré’s Wholesome, Pet-Themed Music Video With Skrillex, Jimmy Eat World, Rise Against, More

Tapping back into his punk rock roots for a fleeting moment, Skrillex appeared alongside a gaggle of cameos in post-hardcore band Touché Amoré‘s new “Reminders” music video. In addition to the former From First to Last member, the video also features Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World, Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance, Tim McIlrath of Rise Against, and Andy Hull of Manchester Orchestra, among many others.  The star-studded video is a compilation of user-generated content in which everyone poses for the camera with their adorable pets. According to Touché Amoré frontman Jeremy Bolm, its sole purpose was to bring joy during dark times. “The music video for ‘Reminders’ conceptually was driven by b...

AWD, FWD, or RWD—Which Wheel Drive Is Best?

Forgive us for engaging in maieutics right off the bat—doing as Greek philosopher Socrates did by answering a question with further questions—but that’s how these things go. There is no single answer for everyone. Wisdom cannot be taught, only learned. So, if your pressing question has to do with vehicle drivelines and whether all-wheel drive (AWD), front-wheel drive (FWD), or rear-wheel drive (RWD) is best, we suggest you first look deep within and ask yourself a few more questions. First, are you simply seeking a transportation appliance that promises the greatest safety, economy, and practicality? Are you a driving enthusiast who finds joy in driving and is looking to form an emotional bond with their vehicle? How do you feel about off-roading, or acquiring and maintaining a ...

3 Digital Transformation Priorities for Healthcare Organisations in Africa

South Africa’s healthcare sector has conducted roughly four million COVID-19 tests with around 650 000 positive cases identified. While infection rates continue to climb in much of the developed and developing world, stringent measures to contain the coronavirus in South Africa have helped flatten the curve to the point where most normal economic activity can resume. While public efforts at hygiene and social distancing have certainly contributed greatly to the decline in daily case numbers, it’s undoubtedly the tireless work of the healthcare sector that has helped the country get through the greatest public health challenge in a century. Efforts to treat infected patients were complicated by a prevailing shortage of medical staff. The World Bank estimates South Africa has only 0.9 medica...
