Watch 12-Year-Old Noah Epps Perform Eerie Dance to Boombox Cartel Song on America’s Got Talent

Back in June 2020, Noah Epps stunned his America’s Got Talent audience with a spine-chilling dance routine to a song by Excision, harnessing his love of electronic music and manifesting it into a unique performance that captured the collective heart of the EDM community. Epps went on to advance to the quarterfinals of the famed competition show and poured gasoline on his meteoric rise with a mind-blowing performance soundtracked by Boombox Cartel‘s breakout trap hit “B2U.” The America’s Got Talent producers pulled out all the stops for the young phenom, who gyrated around in his signature marionette costume on a festival-grade stage and backdrop featuring polychromatic arcade consoles, a menacing claw machine, and a giant Epps-branded spider robot. &...

Tricky Talks Grief, Racism, Cathartic New LP Fall to Pieces

Although he’s managed to cloak himself in mystery for the last 30 years of his career, Tricky offered a surprising level of candor and transparency in his must-read 2019 memoir, Hell Is Round the Corner. As he documents in the book, the Bristol-born musician has always used music to escape a reality plagued by misfortune, violence and racism.  “Well, it’s funny — I actually learned about racism through white people,” he says, almost incredulously, to SPIN. “And with what America’s going through right now, I wondered if they really wanted a book by the name of Hell Is Round The Corner on their coffee table. I don’t know if that’s good timing, but my manager encouraged me to do it because ‘people will understand you more.’” Tricky’s innovative catalog conveys the depth of his brood...

Kanye West’s ‘Gone’ 15 Years Later: How an Otis Redding Sample Spawned a Prescient Song

Written and performed by Chuck Willis and released as a 1956 single, “It’s Too Late” is a languid torch tune that verges on doo-wop — it’s prom slow dance bait. Willis’ singing and the over-stylized arrangement lends a febrile schmaltz to what should be a heartbreaking conceit: The narrator’s love affair is an extinguished flame. There’s simply no more there, even if the song — which seems to end before it’s even begun — isn’t all that broken up about it. Nearly a decade later for his Sings Soul Ballads LP, Otis Redding cut a drastic reinvention.  The lyrics were altered dramatically; among many other changes, “you”s were largely replaced by “her”s and “she”s, so the speaker might be mourning his loss to someone at a bar, as opposed to a chagrined lover trembling in his bed. So too ha...

As Clubs Remain Closed, Gorgon City, Benny Benassi, More Share Favorite Ibiza Memories [Exclusive]

COVID-19 is like a school bully, kicking the shins and stomping on the sandcastles of the live music industry every chance it gets. Its unrelenting wrath has been felt in droves by not only the electronic music community, but the modern music zeitgeist at large. Innumerable artists, managers, sound and lighting engineers, operators, bartenders, and virtually every other moving part of what makes the wheels of a venue turn have found themselves hapless in the virus’ wake. There is perhaps no place on earth more suitable for a soppy session of nostalgia while we wait patiently for nightclubs to reopen than Ibiza. With no ostensible light at the end of the tunnel of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, EDM.com caught up with a number of influential electronic music artists to wax poetic ab...
