Has South Africa Run with 5G Before it could Walk?

A number of South African telecommunications companies have recently launched local 5G networks. “The decision to introduce 5G means the service provider has determined that there are enough people in one place who are able to pay for super-fast wireless internet. Yes, it is a great technology. It is fast. It is the cream of mobile terrestrial telecoms and it serves the elite few who can afford it,” says Victor Stephanopoli, COO of MzansiSat. When 2G was introduced to South Africa in 1992, 2G networks were the first to offer data services and SMS text messaging. 2G was followed by LTE, which became 3G and which offered faster data transfer and video calling, making it preferable for smartphones. In 2012, 4G was launched in SA, initially only covering small areas in Johannesburg. Stephanopo...

Ice-T: Our 1991 Interview

This article originally appeared in the May 1991 issue of SPIN. Ice-T’s first acting experience came in front of security cameras—as a street hustler playing the part of a yuppie. He’d walk into a jewelry store and say to the salesman: “My father’s in the area buying land—he’s a real-estate developer—and I’m going to UCLA to be a lawyer. My mom and dad have been together twenty-five years, and I’m interested in buying them a 3.2-karat, flawless, emerald-cut diamond.” Then as soon as the salesman handed him the ring, he’d be out the door. “Being an actor,” says Ice, “is really being a liar—a professional liar.” Now the rapper is a star in the new shoot-‘em-up drug war movie New Jack City. The hardest part about making this career move was having to play a cop. “I was uptight with that,” Ice...

2022 Ford Bronco Raptor: What We Know (Plus, What It’ll Look Like)

See all 202 photos What Is a Ford Bronco Raptor? Unlike the regular Ford Bronco’s off-road-enhanced trim levels, such as the Black Diamond and Badlands, which are geared toward traditional rock crawling and clod-busting, the Raptor has a higher-speed mission. The closest Bronco that Ford’s shown may be the Wildtrak model, but the Raptor will take that trim’s abilities to the next level. Expect reworked suspension components designed for plenty of wheel travel and high-speed bump absorption—basically, the chassis will be set up to perform Baja racing-that ought to allow the Bronco Raptor to bound across the open desert. There also will be a more powerful, likely larger, engine option than the twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 that tops the run-of-the-mill BroncoR...

“Hook” Star Dante Basco Explains How His Character Inspired Skrillex’s “Bangarang”

Skrillex superfans and pop culture aficionados may know that the title of his Grammy Award-winning EP and single, Bangarang, gets its name from a catchphrase featured in the 1991 Steven Spielberg movie Hook. In a recent interview with Comicbook.com, Dante Basco, one of the film’s leading actors, spoke about how his character helped to inspire one of Skrillex’s most iconic works. In the interview, Basco explained that he actually knew Skrillex before his rise to the top of the EDM world. A Seattle Company Disguised a Drive-In Rave as a Religious Service—And Got Away with It

A Seattle concert lighting company has pulled off a hoodwinking of biblical proportions. You’ll understand that pun in a moment. According to a report by IQ Magazine, Seattle-based company R90 hosted a recent drive-in rave by classifying it as a religious service. Doing so allowed them to swerve the repercussions that result from violations of COVID-19 lockdown laws in the state of Washington. R90’s “Covert Bat Drive Thru Rave” was organized by owner Joe Cole, who found a fortuitous loophole in Washington Governor Jay Inslee‘s official memorandum permitting drive-in spiritual services. Cole and his team pitched the rave to state officials as a spiritual gathering that would offer “the gift of music.” What followed was an intimate 21-car r...

Comparison Test: Is the VF Engineering Lamborghini Huracán Performante Better Than the Stock Version?

Years ago, I was driving in a car with John Hennessey on the drag strip behind his shop, located just west of Houston, Texas. The car was a then-new 2014 Porsche 991.1 Turbo S that I was in the process of driving across the country. I’d been racing against one of John’s huge-horsepower Cadillac CTS-V Coupes, and after about 20 battles (the AWD Porsche kept winning) I gave him a ride in the Turbo S. At the end of the strip I asked John if his company tunes Porsche Turbos like this one. He replied that he’d tune anything. Then I asked why on earth would anyone bother tuning such a ridiculously quick car. “Well Jonny,” he began in his infectious, homey drawl. “Two buddies buy the same car. One of them’s got to be faster than the other guy. It’s ...

This Electronic Music Album Samples Endangered Songbirds to Raise Awareness of Conservation

A group of artists have responded to the challenge to create a song utilizing the sounds of their favorite songbird. The result is an album that will immortalize the calls of the world’s most endangered bird species in an effort to draw awareness towards their plight. Artist Robin Perkins, also known as El Búho (Spanish for “the Owl”), is spearheading the project as a follow-up to his 2015 release, A Guide to the Birdsong of South America. The initial album was supported by a successful crowdfunding campaign, which raised $15,000 for two South American nonprofit organizations. The follow-up effort, titled A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, aims to do the same with music featuring the Jamaican Blackbird, ...
