From bad weather to artist cancellations to simply mediocre lineups, few events have been immune to misfortune in the early days of summer. Despite looking nothing like the festival that was first announced back in May 2021 — or even what was detailed in January of this year — Boston Calling 2022 did indeed happen, and we have the photos to prove it. Unfortunate circumstances, positive COVID tests, and severe weather warnings meant a number of artists on the original lineup never took the stage. It also meant that Nine Inch Nails performed a rare double-header, topping both Friday and Saturday night. For the second time in a week, Nine Inch Nails played a festival headline slot that was initially intended for Foo Fighters. At both last weekend’s Welcome to Rockville and Friday’s Boston Calling kick off, Trent Reznor and co. served as last-minute replacements after the tragic loss of Foo drummer Taylor Hawkins. Festivals being forced to find fill-ins for canceled acts isn’t the rarest of things, but the circumstances around NIN adding these dates to their first tour in four years comes from uniquely sad circumstances. Day N Vegas 2021 Recap: Kendrick Lamar Returns, Doja Cat Reigns and More Highlights
The second edition of Goldenvoice’s hotly-anticipated Day N Vegas Festival brought a range of performances from hip-hop and R&B acts to the Las Vegas Festival Grounds for three nights over the November 12th-14th weekend. On the heels of the November 5th crowd surge and mass-casualty event at Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival, the hours leading into Day N Vegas took a cautionary tone. Rolling Loud New York 2021 came to a close on Saturday (October 30th) after a first day dominated by hometown rappers was followed by J. Cole’s unforgettable performance in a torrential downpour. Inclimate weather was once again in the forecast, but this time around, festivalgoers came more prepared for the elements, bringing along ponchos or rain jackets. In comparison to the night before, Travis Scott dealt with lighter rain, which was probably a good thing considering how hard he and his fans raged throughout his performance. Meanwhile, Griselda played their more traditional brand of hip-hop, and Roddy Ricch continued to develop as a star performer. Outside Lands Festival kicked off in San Francisco on Friday (October 29th), and thousands made their way to a sunny Golden Gate Park for a stacked first day. Highlights included two lovely sets from Bartees Strange (one on the Sutro Stage and one acoustic set at “Cocktail Magic”), October Artist of the Month Remi Wolf’s tour de force performance, Glass Animals’ main stage victory lap, and headliners Tyler, the Creator and The Strokes thrilling fans with their biggest hits. And with an ominous but perfectly-San-Francisco fog settling in around midday, Day 1 of Outside Lands had an incomparable vibe and energy — fitting, for the biggest festival in the Bay Area.
