Michael Caine is Not Retiring from Acting, According to Rep

Michael Caine is not retiring from acting despite recent comments suggesting otherwise. The 88-year-old actor made headlines on Friday following the publication of a new interview in which he said his role in the upcoming film Best Sellers would be “my last part.” “I haven’t worked for two years and I have a spine problem which affects my legs so I can’t walk very well,” Caine told BBC Radio presenter Simon Mayo. “And I also wrote a couple of books which were published and were successful, so I’m now not an actor I’m a writer.” Advertisement Related Video “There’s not exactly scripts pouring out with a leading man who’s 88,” Caine added. However, according to TheWrap, when reached for comment Caine’s representatives clarified that he hasn’t actually retired. Instead, it appears Caine was s...

Daniel Craig Prefers Gay Bars Because of “Aggressive Dick Swinging at Hetero Bars”

Daniel Craig has said that he prefers to frequent gay bars because that way he can avoid the culture of “aggressive dick swinging at hetero bars.” The James Bond actor dropped this pearl of wisdom during a new appearance on the Lunch with Bruce podcast with his pal Bruce Bozzi. “I’ve been going to gay bars for as long as I can remember,” Craig said. “One of the reasons is because I don’t get into fights in gay bars that often.” When it comes to performative masculinity at straight venues, Craig added, “I just got very sick of as a kid, because it was like: ‘I don’t want to end up in a punch-up.’ And I did. That would happen quite a lot. And it [a gay bar] would just be a good place to go.” Advertisement Related Video In his experience, gay bars are much more welcoming. ...

Now I’m in This Dream Place: Mulholland Drive Is Still Puzzling, 20 Years Later

I still remember the first time I saw Mulholland Drive, which celebrates its twentieth anniversary this week. It was in the spring of 2005, and I was in my freshman year of college at the University of Iowa. An English lit major with an interest in writing about movies, I’d signed up for an Introduction to Cinema course that was required to pursue a film studies minor. A lot of the films we’d watched so far — Weerasethakul’s Mysterious Object at Noon, Tarkovsky’s The Sacrifice — had left me, a curious but sheltered eighteen-year-old, somewhat cold. But there was an expectant buzz in the air when I settled in for that day’s screening: the film we’d watch today would have boobs in it. I knew who David Lynch was, but had only seen The Elephant Man, not the most representative film of his care...

Timothée Chalamet Talks Willy Wonka and Recording Music at Abbey Road

Earlier this year, Warner Bros. revealed that critical darling Timothée Chalamet is set to star as a young Willy Wonka in an upcoming prequel film to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. After offering a first look over the weekend, Chalamet has now previewed his “off-center” character in a new interview with TIME. “It’s not mining the darker emotions in life,” Chalamet told TIME when asked about his role. “It’s a celebration of being off-center and of being okay with the weirder parts of you that don’t quite fit in.” Best of all, it looks like Chalamet’s confectionary role will double as a soundtrack opportunity. The movie, which is titled Wonka, is also a musical, which means fans will get to hear plenty of presumably charming songs belted by Hollywood’s young sweetheart. Advertisement Rel...

David Arquette Acquires Rights to Bozo the Clown

With this year marking the 25th anniversary of Wes Craven’s first Scream film, David Arquette has shown no intention of distancing himself from anything and everything spooky. As if reprising his role as Woodsboro sheriff Dewey Riley in next year’s Scream reboot isn’t enough to cement his horror legacy, the actor has acquired the rights to a character we would argue is even more terrifying than Ghostface: Bozo the Clown. Arquette discussed the sale recently on Chicago’s WGN-TV, saying he’s been a longtime fan of the children’s entertainment icon. He’s Bozo’s first new owner in 65 years, having acquired the rights from Larry Harmon Pictures, which largely popularized the character. “I fell in love with Bozo when I was a kid living in Evanston, Illinois,” shared Arquette. “Bob Bell’s po...

Denis Villeneuve “Would Deeply Love” to Make a James Bond Movie

If the latest James Bond film can be directed by an American, then anything is possible. Now that California native Cary Fogi Fukunaga’s No Time to Die has finally hit theaters, the door seems open for fellow US filmmakers to speculate about their own take on 007, including Denis Villeneuve. In a new interview on the podcast Happy. Sad. Confused., Villeneuve discussed his longtime dream to direct an installment in the Bond franchise, saying it would be “a privilege” and “pure cinematic joy.” “I would deeply love one day to make a James Bond movie,” the Dune director said. “It’s a character that I’ve been with since my childhood. I have massive affection for Bond. It would be a big challenge to try and reboot it after what Daniel did.” Villeneuve continued to rave about Daniel Cra...

NYFF Review: Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Is Spectacular — And Spectacularly Underwhelming

This review is part of our coverage of the 2021 New York Film Festival. The Pitch: Frank Herbert’s seminal sci-fi novel Dune gets its second big-screen treatment. The first was a notorious misfire directed by David Lynch, who famously disowned the final film; the newer version is from Denis Villeneuve, who has experience with sci-fi both emotionally intimate (Arrival) and storied in its nerdy history (Blade Runner 2049). Though the politics and world-building of the Dune world can seem obtuse — the names alone present a challenge for the less sci-fi-inclined — its story will also have a familiar ring for anyone who’s absorbed a few of the many works the novel influenced. Nashville Film Festival Review: Spencer Is a Devastating Portrait of the People’s Princess

This review is part of our coverage of the 2021 Nashville Film Festival. The Pitch: Over the course of three days, Diana, Princess of Wales (born Diana Spencer) is faced with a decision that will inevitably change her fate: continue living in near agony among the royal family, or separate from her husband? History already knows the answer, leaving an air of tragedy even in moments of small victory and stolen joy for Princess Diana (Kristen Stewart, as striking in her portrayal as early reactions indicated). “It’s three days,” Diana whispers to herself early in the film. Those three days prove to be a trial more difficult than even she had anticipated. Woody Harrelson Punches Man in Face at Washington, DC’s Watergate Hotel

Woody Harrelson was involved in a physical scuffle with an overzealous photographer in Washington, DC on Wednesday night. According to a report by NBC Washington, the altercation occurred on the rooftop of D.C.’s famous Watergate Hotel after the unidentified man refused to stop taking photographs of the actor and his daughter. However, eye witnesses confirmed that Harrelson merely acted in self-defense after the amateur paparazzi escalated the situation as the clear aggressor. In a statement taken from a police report of the incident, The Hunger Games star told officers the other man, who appeared intoxicated, lunged at him “in an attempt to grab his neck” after he was asked to stop taking pictures and delete the photographs from his phone.
