An Oral History of The Freshman: Matthew Broderick, Andrew Bergman, and Michael Lobell Revisit the 1990 Comedy

On July 20th, 1990, The Freshman hit theaters with all the right pieces. It had solid pitch, one of Hollywood’s sharpest scribes in writer/director Andrew Bergman, and ’80s icon and heartthrob Matthew Broderick. To top it all off, the mob comedy managed to even wrangle the Don himself Marlon Brando, who had all but retired by that point. It wasn’t a summer blockbuster, but it was a success for TriStar. Critics loved it, audiences enjoyed it, and the box office returns managed to nearly double the budget. In the years since, however, it has garnered a cult following, and many view it as one of the last great works of Brando’s legendary (and oft-puzzling) career. To commemorate the film’s 30th anniversary, we recently spoke with writer/director Andrew Bergman, producer Michael Lobell, and st...

Also present were Bryan Lee O’Malley, creator of the original Scott Pilgrim graphic novel, and th...

Boat From Jaws Being Rebuilt to Study Sharks

We’re gonna need another boat! The original creators behind the iconic Orca from Steven Spielberg’s Jaws are rebuilding the boat from scratch. What’s more, it’s all being captured in a new documentary that’s aptly titled, Return of the Orca. Along for the ride is Academy Award nominee and Jaws production designer Joe Alves, Martha’s Vineyard local Chris Crawford who worked on the OG Orca, and Jaws author Peter Benchley’s widow/Beneath the Waves director Wendy. According to the project’s press release: “Rather than hunting the great white shark, as in the film, part of the Orca’s new mission will be researching marine life and helping people better understand the varieties of shark species in the area around Martha’s Vineyard including great white sharks.” Editors’ Picks It’s a projec...

David Lynch Releases Eerie, Hypnotic New Video for “I Have a Radio”: Watch

David Lynch has returned with another gem for his increasingly popular YouTube channel. He’s turned the dial back to 2011 and has dropped an eerie, if not morbidly hypnotic, music video for Crazy Clown Time bonus track “I Have a Radio”. Even for the auteur, it’s not much. Two oil figures dance in unison to the track, looking like something out of a Stephen Gammell nightmare. If you make it through the full six minutes, you’ll be rewarded by a bunch of pig fucking noises. Watch “I Have a Radio” below. In quasi-related news, if you’re looking for the brighter side of Lynch, you would be wise to grab a cup of coffee, a black and white cookie, maybe even some Hennigans, and check out Sein Peaks. 10 Clueless Quotes and GIFs You Totally Use All the Time

Clueless came out in theaters 25 years ago today, but that doesn’t mean you have to be totally buggin’. The rom-com centered around a rich girl from Beverly Hills trying to navigate her life — who helps the new, totally clueless kid on the block fit in — has become a cult classic. And it only gets more and more popular with each new generation of teens. If you’ve seen Clueless, you totally get why, too. I don’t know about you, but I still wish I had Cher’s epic closet — complete with a capable-looking outfit from Fred Segal, of course — and it never gets old watching her hilarious attempts at getting a driver’s license. Oh, and do any of us ever tire of watching a young Paul Rudd (who paved the way for many girls’ crushes on nerdy, alternative guys) poorly dance his way into her heart? On ...

The 100 Greatest Summer Blockbuster Movies of All Time

“Cool.” “Riveting.” “Gripping.” “High-Octane Thrill Ride!” All cliches of film criticism and yet all feelings we’ve experienced while watching a crackerjack summer blockbuster. Oops, there we go again. All things considered, any moviegoer can speak to the divine feeling of sitting in a cool, packed theater in the heat of the summer and being united by narrative. Not just united, but hypnotized, mentally convinced that the fate of the world is before your eyes, and there is nothing more important in that very moment. It’s escapism. It’s popcorn. It’s Chinatown. But also, it’s the power of spectacle. Over the years, Hollywood has certainly run that concept through the ringer, having turned what used to be a summer blockbuster season into, well, an entire calendar year. Now, all those aforeme...

Every era in film comes with its own technological advancements, but it takes that perfect note to unify the tools of the times. Amidst the ensuing pandemic, and its share of indefinite delays, hope for a solid note is thinning, not least with the filmmaker who has been central to the conversation for the past decade. On July 16, 2010, exactly 10 years ago yesterday, Christopher Nolan unleashed Inception into theaters, galvani...

The Russo Brothers Cast Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in The Gray Man for Netflix

Marvel Cinematic Universe directors The Russo Brothers are bringing their talents back to the real world. And they aren’t doing it cheaply: The Hollywood duo has teamed up with Netflix for the platform’s most expensive film, The Gray Man. What’s more, the brothers have brought on both Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans for the starring roles. As Deadline reports, Joe Russo will provide a script based on Mark Greaney’s 2009 novel of the same name. The Gray Man focuses on ex-CIA operative Court Gentry, a.k.a. “The Gray Man” (Gosling), and his efforts to elude capture by a former co-worker Lloyd Hansen (Evans). Netflix is providing the Avengers directors with a substantial production budget of approximately $200 million dollars (!). The company hopes that the action-packed Gray Man will s...
