Top Performances is a recurring feature in which we definitively handpick the very best performances from an iconic actor or actress. It has been updated for Matt Damon’s 52nd birthday. It’s not enough for Matt Damon to be conventionally attractive, or even physically imposing. He also has to be preternaturally intelligent, a savant capable of outwitting a Fields Medal-winning mathematician, a ruthless Russian card shark, or a millionaire casino owner, as the occasion may demand. This is the curious truth at the center of Damon’s career: Though he’s got all the looks you could hope for in a leading man, it’s what’s behind those steely blue eyes that keeps us coming back for more. Maybe it’s because he played a boy genius in 1997’s Good Will Hunting, then followed up that breakthrough ...
Dan Harmon was asked if Chevy Chase would return for the recently-announced Community movie coming to Peacock, and the series creator joked, “I don’t even know if it’s legal for him to come back. “That may be out of my hands,” he continued. “Maybe something I sign for with an insurance company, I really don’t know.” On a more serious note, he said, “Everyone wants to know, is so-and-so coming back? I cant really speak to that.” Harmon and Chase famously disagreed about the direction of the latter’s character Pierce, and Chase used the N-word during at least one heated exchange. Donald Glover, who also starred on the show, has spoken about his many racist interactions with Chase, including being told, “People think you’re funnier because you’re Black.” Advertisement Related V...
Little Children director Todd Field’s return to film, the acclaimed drama Tár, was worth the wait. A haunting descent into the psyche of a composer/conductor (Cate Blanchett) whose ambitions get derailed by her past and present foibles, the film presents a lush soundscape that includes many layers, from the original composition that Lydia Tár is struggling to create, to the lush symphonies of Mahler, to the uneasy underlying score created by Oscar-winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir (Joker). Field brought Hildur onto the project very early on — “I think I was like the second person to join the project after Cate,” she tells Consequence via Zoom — and she says that when she first read the script, she felt like the writer/director had authentically captured a lot about the modern-day world o...
For the first time in 18 years, the Pope of Trash is back to bless us with another film. As Deadline reports, John Waters will write and direct an adaptation of his own 2022 novel Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance for Village Roadshow Pictures. Waters’ last turn behind the camera was directing Tracey Ullman, Johnny Knoxville, and Chris Isaak in 2004’s A Dirty Shame, which paired high-camp sensibilities with a big studio budget in an experiment that, it seemed at the time, would never be repeated. Now, the 76-year-old provocateur is back. “Liarmouth is the craziest thing I’ve written in a while, so maybe it’s fitting that my novel was shocking enough to jumpstart the engine of my film career,” Waters said. “Thrilled to be back in the movie business, hopefully to spread demented joy to...
The trailer for the animated Super Mario Bros. movie has arrived and all the fussing about the iconic video game character’s new voice actor can finally get stuffed down a Warp Pipe because it turns out, Chris Pratt’s portrayal just sounds an awful lot like Chris Pratt. The first look introduces the Jurassic World star as the heroic plumber along with the indisputably Super supporting cast topped by Charlie Day’s Luigi, who completes the titular “Bros” combo with Mario, and Anya Taylor-Joy, sounding absolutely regal as Princess Peach. Meanwhile, Jack Black chews some scenery as Mario’s all-time arch-villain Bowser. Watch the trailer below. The animated take is the first feature-length adaptation of Nintendo’s long-running video game series since 1993’s live-action flop starring Bob Hoskins...

The Internet wasn’t thrilled when Universal Pictures announced very-not-Italian Chris Pratt would voice Italian-via-Japan Mario in a new Super Mario Bros. animated film. But Pratt and those closest to the project, due to hit theaters in April 2023, are adamant that his interpretation of the beloved video game character will have you shouting “Wahoo!” (Sorry.) Chris Meledandri, a producer on the film and founder of Universal Pictures’ Illumination animation studio, believes he speaks for all Italian-Americans in saying Pratt’s take on Mario isn’t offensive. “When people hear Chris Pratt’s performance, the criticism will evaporate, maybe not entirely — people love to voice opinions, as they should,” Meledandri said back in June. “I’m not sure this is the smartest defense, but as a ...
Spawn finally appears to be nearing his long-awaited big screen resurrection from Blumhouse Productions. The Jamie Foxx-led film reboot for the Image Comics antihero has shown new signs of life with the announcement by creator Todd McFarlane that the script will now be penned by a trio of new writers: Scott Silver (Joker), Malcolm Spellman (Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Captain America: New World Order), and Matthew Mixon. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, McFarlane acknowledged he might not be the right person to direct the movie given the stakes involved. “If we’ve got an A-list actor, A-list producers, A-list writers, then do you want to shoot for A-list directors, A-list cinematographers?” he said. “The answer is, ‘of course.’ Let’s keep the momentum going.” McFar...
Forget The Nightmare Before Christmas — Christmas is the nightmare in the official trailer for Violent Night, Universal Pictures and 87North’s forthcoming holiday-horror-comedy that stars David Harbour as one grisly Saint Nicholas. To make matters even less merry, it’s Christmas Eve, and Santa’s in the middle of his grand gift delivery; his naughty list is about to get a lot longer as he begins to avenge the bandits in the name of saving Christmas. We can expect to see a lot of red, and not just in ...
Christian Bale is an Academy Award-winning actor (who’s even played Batman, lest we forget), but according to him, Leonardo DiCaprio is a bigger deal. Bale recalled losing several roles to DiCaprio in a recent interview with GQ, even thanking him for passing on the roles he has secured. “Look, to this day, any role that anybody gets, it’s only because he’s passed on it beforehand,” Bale said. “It doesn’t matter what anyone tells you. It doesn’t matter how friendly you are with the directors. All those people that I’ve worked with multiple times, they all offered every one of those roles to him first. Right? I had one of those people actually tell me that. So, thank you, Leo, because literally, he gets to choose everything he does. And good for him, he’s phenomenal.” Bale eve...
Having a world renowned pop star as a costar has its perks. In a Wednesday (Oct. 5) interview with People two days ahead of the release of his upcoming film Amsterdam, Christian Bale detailed what it was like to act alongside Taylor Swift — whose singing voice was so beautiful, he says he got goosebumps just listening to it. Explore Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news According to Bale, there was one scene in the David O. Russell-directed movie that required him and his costar John David Washington to sing a song with Swift, who makes a cameo as the grieving daughter of a man killed toward the beginning of Amsterdam. The American Psycho star and Washington play World War I veterans who are wrongly accused of murdering the “All Too Well” singer’s ch...
The family of late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins has reached a settlement in their wrongful death lawsuit against producers of Rust including Alec Baldwin, Deadline reports. Production on the Western film is expected to resume in January with Matthew Hutchins, Halyna’s widower, now serving as executive producer. “We have reached a settlement, subject to court approval, for our wrongful death case against the producers of Rust, including Alec Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions, LLC,” Matthew Hutchins said in a statement. “As part of that settlement, our case will be dismissed.” He added, “The filming of Rust, which I will now executive produce, will resume with all the original principal players on board in January 2023.” “I have no interest in engaging in re...
