Frank Ocean may be one of the most popular musical acts of the 21st century, but back in 2010, the California-based, New Orleans-bred artist (formerly known as Christopher Breaux) was just getting his feet wet as a member of the hip-hop collective Odd Future, led by fellow future Grammy winner Tyler, the Creator. Ocean came to life when he sang, but his reserved temperament (a likely byproduct of his clear ambivalence regarding spotlight) was overshadowed by Tyler’s electric personality, making personal connections with this man of mystery a slight challenge for fans. Yet, Ocean’s debut mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra (released on Feb. 16, 2011) provides a candid first glimpse into his mind. Dropped without advance warning on his Tumblr page—home base for several personal and professional musings...
Future bass king San Holo still reigns supreme. His recent stay vibrant EP was released via his bitbird imprint back in May, and the star producer is showing no signs of slowing down. Back in May, San Holo debuted an unreleased remix of Soulja Boy‘s “Crank That” at Porter Robinson‘s Secret Sky Festival. To the delight of his fans, that remix has now been released in full along with a few other surprises. He also dropped a shimmering, airy remix of Frank Ocean‘s hit “White Ferrari” on SoundCloud, stunning listeners with his nearly cinematic approach to the rework. Hidden in plain sight in the track’s description is a Dropbox link to a free download of the edit, along with two other “Vibrant Remixe...
James Blake‘s stripped down cover of Frank Ocean‘s “Godspeed” has finally hit the virtual shelves. The haunting cover had—well, haunted his fans for over three years after he debuted it live at FORM Arcosanti in May 2015. While the piano ballad isn’t exactly EDM, the spellbinding cover comes from one of the most prolific, groundbreaking electronic music producers of today. Blake’s electro-soul sound has catapulted him to become one of the most highly coveted collaborators in contemporary music, thanks in part to awe-inspiring efforts like his aching twist on “Godspeed.” He was actually involved in the recording of Ocean’s original track, helping the fellow Grammy Award-winner arrange it before it appeared on Blonde. Over three...
James Blake is “back to blonde,” according to his Twitter. And he’s also back to Blonde apparently, too. The London singer-songwriter just shared a heartfelt rendition of Frank Ocean’s “Godspeed” — a track he helped arrange and produce off the 2016 album Blonde — on streaming services Friday. It’s a track that fans have been begging for after he first performed the song live in 2017 and later shared a stripped-down Instagram cover back in January. And in celebration of the record (or also likely not) he’s decided to bleach his hair. Last month marked four years since Ocean released the seminal record, which closes with “Godspeed” along with track “Futura Free.” Blake opens with the track’s signature piano chords before diving into Ocean’s lyrics, leaving his rendition true to the original ...

Harry Styles, Coachella headliner Frank Ocean, Vampire Weekend and the Verve once had nothing in common. Well, now they do. Alt-rock quintet Switchfoot announced a new EP of covers this week — appropriately titled Covers – with the group’s first single, a rendition of Ocean’s 2011 Nostalgia, Ultra cut “Swim Good,” released today (May 29). The EP also comes complete with the groups’ takes on Styles’ top-20 single “Lights Up,” the Chainsmokers’ “Sick Boy,” Vampire Weekend’s “Harmony Hall,” the Verve’s “Lucky Man” and Jon Bellion’s “Stupid Deep.” Hey y’all! Hope you’re safe and healthy. During this strange, unsettling time of isolation, playing these cover songs have brought me a lot of joy. They have reminded me that the world’s a lot bigger than the four walls of my own perso...
