Quantic Dreams’ ‘Under the Waves’ Dives Into the Mystery of Deep-Sea Exploration

Joining in on the celebrations at Gamescom, Quantic Dream has now unveiled Under the Waves. As its name suggests, the new title thrusts players into the world of deep-sea exploration, but with a track record of games like Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human, it’s no surprise that Quantic Dream has also given the game a deep, pensive narrative experience. As the company describes, players will take over the character of professional diver Stan in a techno-futuristic ’70s period. Diving deep under the North Sea, “Stan retreads further into his self-imposed solitude” and “starts to experience strange events far beneath the waves.” The ultimate decision lying ahead of him will decide whether he stays “lost in the depths forever” or “breaks free to the su...

GameFi developers could be facing big fines and hard time

Are cryptocurrency games innocent fun? Or are they Ponzi schemes facing an imminent crackdown by regulators in the United States? Tokens related to cryptocurrency games — known colloquially as “GameFi” — were worth a cumulative total of nearly $10 billion as of mid-August, give or take a few billion. (The number may vary depending on whether you want to include partially finished projects, how you count the number of tokens that projects technically have in circulation, and so on.) In that sense, whether the games are legal is a $10 billion question that few investors have considered. And that’s an oversight they may soon regret. That’s because a bipartisan consensus appears to be forming among legislators in the U.S. that the industry needs to be shut down. They haven’t addressed the issu...

Shaquille O’Neal and Arcade1Up Team Up for ‘NBA JAM: Shaq Edition’ Arcade Machine

During his 19-year NBA career, Shaquille O’Neal was a rim-rattling, backboard-breaking, opponent-owning force who — among many other monikers — was dubbed “MDE,” or “most dominant ever” for his unstoppable blend of power and agility. Now, Shaq is bringing his overpowering game to another realm by teaming up with home arcade system manufacturer Arcade1Up for a special NBA Jam: Shaq Edition arcade machine. The special game setup is Arcade1Up’s largest at-home gaming cabinet yet, standing 67 inches tall (not quite as big as Shaq, but nothing to sneeze at) and featuring a 19-inch screen. It comes pre-loaded with NBA JAM, NBA JAM TOURNAMENT EDITION and NBA HANGTIME, and is decked out with Shaq’s famous Dunkman hit — which sneaker lovers will realize as the logo from his signature Reebok sneaker...

As a human character, you’ll play as a bounty hunter who saves other humans from an alien cartel that’s using them to make drugs. The new gameplay trailer above showcases a boss fight against 9-TORG, and you’ll see how your weapon talks to you with funny quirks while you dodge and shoot your way through your opponent while trapped inside what looks lik...

‘New Tales from the Borderlands’ Is Coming This October

As promised by Gearbox Software back in April, a new Tales from the Borderlands game has just been announced and will be arriving before the end of the year. Aptly named “New Tales From the Borderlands,” the sequel to the narrative-based game retains its core mechanics but introduces a brand new storyline to fans of the franchise. This time round, there’ll be three main characters: Anu, Octavio and Fran. The game revolves around the three as they join forces to “face down a planetary invasion,” “battle vicious Vault monsters,” “dismantle cold-hearted capitalists,” “endeavor to change the world” and “maybe even save it.” As usual, you’ll also get the iconic cel-shading art style from the Borderlands franchise and its stylistic character designs along with the tongue-in-cheek humor and ...

Sony Faces $5.9 Billion USD Lawsuit For Allegedly “Ripping People Off” With PlayStation Games

Sony is now facing a lawsuit claiming $5.9 billion USD from the company for allegedly “ripping people off” through its PlayStation digital game sales. According to a new report from Sky News, the Japanese gaming giant is being sued by a consumer rights organization in the U.K. led by Alex Neill which accuses the company of predatory and anti-competitive pricing for the digital versions of its games. The filing says that Sony puts a commission of 30 percent on all games sold as well as microtransactions via its online store, resulting in higher prices for consumers. In total, up to nine million customers could receive a payout from the lawsuit, ranging anywhere from $79 and 61 USD. “The game is up for Sony PlayStation,” said Neill. “With this legal action, I am standing up for the mill...

eBay Is Acquiring TCGplayer For Almost $300 Million USD

To further its efforts in expanding its market share in the trading card game industry, eBay has now announced its acquisition of the online marketplace TCGplayer. The latter was founded back in 2008 and has served as a popular online sales platform for some of the world’s most popular trading card games including Pokémon TCG, Magic: The Gathering and Digimon Card Game. eBay’s buyout will come with a $295 million USD price tag, although the website will continue to operate independently following the acquisition, which is now expected to close in Q1 of 2023. Even before absorbing TCGplayer, eBay has already become the largest TCG resale site on the globe, selling a new trading card every two seconds on average in 2021. Despite the figure, the company says the new deal will m...
