Glenn Close’s Performance in Hillbilly Elegy Nominated for Both Oscar and Razzie

Glenn Close has joined the select club of actors nominated for both an Oscar and a Razzie Award for the same role. Via The Hollywood Reporter, she owes this achievement to her performance as Bonnie “Mamaw” Vance in the new film Hillbilly Elegy. The Academy Award shortlist was announced earlier this morning, while the Razzies unveiled their lowlights last week. On the plus side, Close will be competing for her first Oscar against Olivia Colman (The Father), Amanda Seyfried (Mank), Yuh-Jung Youn (Minari), and Maria Bakalova in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. It is Close’s seventh Oscar nomination, following Best Supporting Actress nods for The World According to Garp (1983), The Big Chill (1984), and The Natural (1985), and Best Actress nominations in Fatal Attraction (1988),...

Glenn Close Made Sure Her 101 Dalmatians Contract Included Keeping Every Single Cruella de Vil Costume

Cruella de Vil walked so that Miranda Priestly could run — and she is absolutely one of the greatest fashion villains of all time. It’s no surprise that a queen of similar stature, Glenn Close, got it written into her 101 Dalmatians contract that Disney would let her keep her entire Cruella de Vil character wardrobe — how divine! Close sat down with Pete Davidson to chat about their most memorable projects for Variety‘s Actors on Actors series for Amazon Studios. “Did you take any of Cruella’s wardrobe? It was so fabulous,” Davidson asked Close, whom played the stylish villain Cruella de Vil in the ’90s hit 101 Dalmatians and the sequel 102 Dalmatians. Close confessed that “I got in my contract that I got to keep all my costumes that I wore in the ...

Hillbilly Elegy Is Basically a Demo Reel for a Young Republican’s Congressional Bid: Review

The Pitch: Legal scholar and author James Donald Bowman (pen name J.D. Vance) was the product of a Kentucky-and-Ohio-bred upbringing. And he’s just got something to say about that. Hillbilly Elegy is Ron Howard and Vanessa Taylor’s adaptation of Vance’s book about his life in Appalachia, specifically how a.) he defeated Southern legacies of “economic anxiety” or whatever the hell that means to b.) grow up into a Yalie. (You can just hear the “now I’m just a Southern Lawyer in the big city” maxims already, can’t you?) Vance is portrayed in dueling narratives, as a young fuckup in Kentucky (Owen Asztalos) and as a struggling law school student (Gabriel Basso) trying to take care of his ma back home. Both stories are marked by his strained relationships with his mother and his “Mamaw”. His mo...

Netflix Just Released the Trailer for Hillbilly Elegy and It’s Rightfully Getting Skewered: Watch

ddNetflix has released the first trailer for Ron Howard’s new film Hillbilly Elegy. The multi-generational addiction drama stars Amy Adams and Glenn Close, a pairing alone that should make the movie a highly anticipated feature — but instead, it’s already been met with a mixed reaction on social media. Hillbilly Elegy follows Gabriel Basso, a former Marine and current Yale Law student, as he returns to his Appalachian home in southern Ohio to take care of his mother Bev, as played by Adams, who’s struggling with addiction. During the trip, he’s forced to reckon with his childhood, his upbringing, and his troubled family, including his terse grandmother, played by Close. Both Hans Zimmer and David Fleming contribute to the score. The trailer sees Adams and Close bringing this plot to life i...
