Silk Sonic followed up their earlier performance of “Leave the Door Open” by paying tribute to Little Richard with “Long Tall Sally” and “Good Golly, Miss Molly”. The multi-millionaire K-pop group — comprised of RM, Jin, J-Hope, Jimin, V, Jungkook, and the freshly minted 28-year-old rapper Suga — put on one of their best performances yet when they took the Grammys stage. “Dynamite” earned BTS their first-ever Grammy nomination in a music category. Grammys 2021: Toots and the Maytals Win Best Reggae Album for Got to Be Tough

Toots Hibbert posthumously won the 2021 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album for his final record with Toots and the Maytals, Got to Be Tough. Hibbert died in September at the age of 77 due to complications caused by COVID-19. Got to Be Tough was the band’s first LP since 2010’s Flip and Twist. In claiming Best Reggae Album, it beat out releases like One World by The Wailers, It All Comes Back to Love by Maxi Priest, Higher Place by Skip Marley, and Upside Down 2020 by Buju Banton. Accepting the award from his home in Montego Bay, the group’s bassist for over 50 years, Jackie Jackson, said, “This is a great honor for a legend and so well-deserved. No words can express how we guys are feeling right now.” Toots and the Maytals previously won Be...

The Strokes Win First-Ever Grammy for Best Rock Album

20 years into their celebrated career, The Strokes are finally Grammy winners. The New York greats took home Best Rock Album for The New Abnormal, and they gave as hilariously abnormal an acceptance speech as you’d hope they would. Despite a number of albums that many music fans would deem classics, The Strokes had never even been nominated for a Grammy prior to this year. Winning a golden gramophone after such a distinguished career was, understandably, an exciting moment for the group, who Zoomed in to accept the award from what appeared to be their personal basement pool hall. Amazingly, the group appeared to not catch the announcement at first, as Julian Casablancas, Nikolai Fraiture, and Fabrizio Moretti leaned into their computer to hear the winner. “Wow! Damn! Sorry we couldn’t hear...

Wuki’s Debut Album is “Part Rave, Part Circus, Part Amusement Park, and Part Art Installation”

Just one year ago,  Wuki was prepping for the 2020 Grammy Awards, for which his flip of Miley Cyrus‘ “Mother’s Daughter” earned a nomination for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. The most pressing matter on his mind was picking out a suit. “I’m living it up right now,” he told EDM.com last January.  That reality now feels miles away, but the pandemic hasn’t kept Wuki from staying sharp in the studio. March 12th saw the official release of his debut album, WukiWorld, via HARD Recs. In fact, the pre-pandemic vision for the release was built around an IRL WukiWorld, which Wuki described as “part rave, part circus, part amusement park, and part art installation,” to EDM.com. “Upon entering, you would be ...

The Weeknd to Boycott the Grammys Going Forward Due to 2021 Nominations Snub

The Weeknd outdid himself when he released After Hours last year. Not only was it one of the best albums of 2020, it also included the single “Blinding Lights”, which recently became the first song in history to remain in the Billboard Top 10 for an entire year. Despite such immense success, The Weeknd received zero nominations for the 2021 Grammys. Now, in response to the snub, he’s decided to boycott the awards show moving forward as both a participant and an attendee. In a statement to The New York Times, the Canadian crooner revealed that he will refuse to attend, perform at, or put his work forward for consideration at the Grammys from here on out. “Because of the secret committees, I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys,” he explained. When news first ...

Clive Davis Reveals Plans for Not One, But Two Pre-Grammy Benefits: ‘We Are Here to Celebrate Music’

Davis tells Billboard plans for the Jan. 30 event were already underway when the Recording Academy decided this month to reschedule the Grammy Awards from Jan. 31 to March 14 due to the pandemic, so he simply decided to honor the original date and then hold a second event on the party’s traditional evening before the Grammy Awards. “When the Grammys moved to March 14, I had so many wonderful artists already set to join me on 30th and rather than getting into schedules, I decided to keep it Jan. 30, but also do our traditional night before the Grammys on March 13,” Davis says. For the first time, both events will be fundraisers. The annual party has been billed as the Recording Academy & Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Gala for the last several years. Davis is the sole host for both events this ...

2021 Grammy Awards Ceremony Postponed Due to COVID-19 Concerns

The 2021 Grammy Awards have been postponed due to COVID-19 concerns, according to a report by Rolling Stone.  The Los Angeles Times reports that the Recording Academy has pushed the Grammys to March 21st, 2021. Considering the impact of the virus prior to the announcement, organizers were already planning a restricted and socially distanced show, devoid of an audience and only open to presenters and performers. However, as the state of California struggles to mitigate the spread of the virus, organizers of the Grammys have decided to pull the plug on the event, which was originally slated to take place on January 31st. “The deteriorating COVID situation in Los Angeles, where hospital services have been overwhelmed [and] ICUs have reached capacity, and new guidance from...

Talking Heads to Receive 2021 Lifetime Achievement Grammy

A month after revealing the nominees for the 2021 Grammy Awards (and completely shutting out The Weeknd), the Recording Academy has revealed the recipients of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Awards. Perhaps a sign of the Academy’s continued attempt to clean up its image with a diversity push, the 2021 Lifetime Achievement honorees include icons from a range of genres. Talking Heads, Selena, and Salt-N-Pepa will all receive the Special Merit gramophones, as will Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, opera singer Marilyn Horne, and late jazz great Lionel Hampton. The Talking Heads’ accolade is particularly noteworthy, as the legendary alt-rock group never received a Grammy during their existence. Their lone nomination came in 1984 for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group for “Burning...
