Deafheaven have released their new studio-recorded live album 10 Years Gone, commemorating the illustrious first decade of their career. Initially, Deafheaven were to go on a world tour called “10 Years Gone”, but the pandemic shut that down. Making the most of the situation, the band decided to properly record its planned setlist live in the studio, offering a vivid document of what fans would have witnessed had the tour happened. The only thing missing is the crowd noise as Deafheaven deconstruct arguably the strongest set of songs in their catalog. “Daedalus” and “Glint” were released as singles, teasing the immensity of this psuedo-live document. Tackling each song full bore, it’s Deafheaven at their most intense and direct. “Revisiting the songs in this studio sessions format with Jac...
“Judgement on COVID-19 goes HEAVY METAL [Kenneth Copeland Remix] [I Demand]”, via YouTube Fire-and-brimstone televangelist Kenneth Copeland is unlikely to enter the dark embrace of heavy metal anytime soon, but one YouTube guitarist has made a valid argument for the Texas pastor’s prospects as a metal frontman. Andres Antunes took Copeland’s recent COVID-19 “exorcism” and laid down some riffs under it, creating one of the most chilling and absurd mashups since Metal Trump. Titled “Judgement on COVID-19 goes HEAVY METAL [Kenneth Copeland Remix] [I Demand]”, Antunes’ video is going viral, having already approached 500,000 views. Copeland’s commanding sermons are terrifying in their own right — especially the COVID one — making Antunes’ decision to combine them with metal riffs all the ...
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Primus were forced to postpone their Rush tribute tour and other dates earlier this year. Now, to make it up to their fans, they’ve announced a “one-of-a-kind” virtual concert called “Alive From Pachyderm Station”. Their first live performance of 2020, the event will see Primus deliver a set from Les Claypool’s own California winery Claypool Cellars. There’s no telling whether the funk metal outfit still plan to pay tribute to Rush and late drummer Neil Peart, or if Aquaman himself will make a cameo, but Claypool & co. are definitely promising viewers a very memorable time “Strange, eclectically wonderful things tend to happen when the three of us get in a room together with our instruments. This will be an intimate and casual performance between t...
Longtime horror cinephile Corey Taylor has filmed a starring role in the upcoming movie Bad Candy alongside Zach Galligan of Gremlins fame. In addition to discussing the film, Taylor hinted in a separate interview that Slipknot could release their next album in 2021. The movie is structured in the classic horror anthology format. Taylor plays a radio DJ who weaves scary stories to his listeners — a task well-suited for the voice of Slipknot — with his co-host (played by Galligan). In a Creepshow-inspired twist, the stories come to life in graphic reenactments that owe much to the great horror films of yore such as Halloween and, of course, Gremlins. “It’s a pretty cool little horror movie that has a linear story going through it, but it’s really kind of made up of different short...
The music video for System of a Down’s classic song “Chop Suey!” has surpassed 1 billion views on YouTube, making it one of few hard rock songs — and arguably the first metal song — to hit that illustrious mark. It’s certainly no surprise — “Chop Suey!” has been a System of a Down staple song since it dropped as the first single from the band’s 2001 masterpiece, Toxicity. It immediately made a huge impact on rock radio, and earned the band a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance. As the YouTube numbers prove, the song’s relevance has endured. “Chop Suey!” joins the company of Guns N’ Roses’ “November Rain” and “Sweet Child O’ Mine”, Linkin Park’s “In the End” and “Numb”, and Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” in the YouTube billion club. While each of those songs definitely fall in...
Ozzy Osbourne has suffered through a number of health issues over the past few years, and the last thing he needs right now is to contract COVID-19. As the metal legend puts it, “If I get this virus, I’m f**ked”. Over the past two years, Osbourne has had a series of health setbacks, including a serious staph infection in late 2018, followed by pneumonia in early 2019. While he was recovering from pneumonia, he fell at home, dislodging metal rods that had been inserted into his body after an ATV accident in 2003. He then disclosed at the beginning of this year that he has been battling Parkinson’s disease for a long time. Had it not been for his various health problems and the pandemic, he likely would have completed his farewell tour by now. But he had to cancel all of his dates for the pa...
Rammstein frontman Till Lindemann has co-authored a second National Geographic picture book with fellow musician and outdoorsman Joey Kelly. The German-language tome is called Amazonas: Reise zum Rio Javari (translation: Amazon: Trip on the Río Yavarí) and is on sale now. The book features exclusive photographs by Thomas Statchelhaus and Matthias Matthies documenting Lindemann and Kelly’s river journey down the Río Yavarí, an “untouched” tributary of the Amazon. There are a few preview shots on Rammstein’s webstore, and the images are striking indeed, depicting Lindemann handling dangerous-looking snakes and traversing the forest and villages with Kelly. In the book, the photos are accompanied by poems written by Lindemann and interviews with both artists. For Rammstein fans, it would make...
“Mining Metal” is a monthly column from Heavy Consequence writers Joseph Schafer and Langdon Hickman. The focus is on noteworthy new music emerging from the non-mainstream metal scene, highlighting releases from small and independent labels — or even releases from unsigned acts. Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by … hold on let me look outside. Nope, still the winter of our discontent, my mistake. This is the eighth Mining Metal introduction essay that I’ve had to write during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to be honest with you, dear readers, I’m running out of even vaguely optimistic spins to ladle onto our monthly roundup of underground metal’s finest riffs. I guess I could say – at least we know who will lead our nation next year, right? How’s this: when we began th...
Distillers singer Brody Dalle leads a new quarantine rendition of the Annie Lennox hit “Walking on Broken Glass” featuring members of My Chemical Romance, Murder by Death, and Thursday, among others. The performance is the latest in the “Bedroom Covers” series from the Two Minutes to Late Night YouTube channel. Dalle shares vocal duties with Murder by Death singer Adam Turla, as My Chemical Romance guitarist Frank Iero, Thursday drummer Tucker Rule, and Soul Glo bassist GG Guerra back them up. As always, Two Minutes to Late Night host Gwarsenio Hall (aka Jordan Olds) is on board to provide additional vocals and guitar. The all-star group of performers take Annie Lennox’s 1992 pop classic and give it a punk and metal vibe, with some heavy guitars and Dalle’s raspy delivery. Murder by D...
Metallica raised over $1.3 million and counting with their recent streaming benefit show and auction. The event was so successful, the streaming window has been extended through 11:00 p.m. PT on December 1st. Proceeds go toward the band’s charitable All Within My Hands Foundation. This year, the annual “Helping Hands” concert saw Metallica in both acoustic and electric form, performing to a virtual audience of thousands. Audience members appeared on screens behind the band, providing an extra level of entertainment for fans watching from home. We caught the streaming show and came away impressed, as it mixed in some nice surprises among the band’s classic hits. Metallica are certainly more than comfortable performing in front of the camera and staying active during the pandemic. ...
Beyond the Boys’ Club is a monthly column from journalist and radio host Anne Erickson, focusing on women in the heavy music genres, as they offer their perspectives on the music industry and discuss their personal experiences. This month’s piece features an interview with Brittney Slayes of Unleash the Archers. Canadian power-metal band Unleash the Archers present a hard-charging sound coupled with creative songwriting and storytelling. Early in their career, the band was often lumped into the symphonic metal genre, simply because they have a female vocalist, but they’re really straight-ahead power metal act, with vocalist Brittney Slayes roaring from song to song. Unleash the Archers recently released a new album, Abyss, featuring stunning guitars and Slayes’ powerful vocals. Slayes chec...
