The Dream Setlist for Dr. Dre & Friends’ 2022 Super Bowl Halftime Show

1. Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg, “Still D.R.E.”  No better introduction for Dre than those Scott Storch piano plinks — well, except for maybe the bellowing synths of “F–k Wit Dre Day,” but no way he’d be able to get through more than a couple lines of that before the NBC execs started lunging for the kill switch. And hey, 20-plus years later, leading Super Bowl halftime is pretty good evidence that Dre is indeed still representin’ for them gangstas all across the world. 2. Snoop Dogg, “Gin and Juice”  As classic as classic gets, you can’t have Snoop on the world’s biggest stage without him kicking a little something for the G’s and performing at least a verse and chorus of his signature Doggystyle smas...

A Timeline of Hip-Hop Performers at Super Bowl Halftime Show

Billboard compiled a timeline of hip-hop performers at the Super Bowl Halftime Show. 1998: Queen Latifah, Boyz II Men, Smokey Robinson, Martha Reeves and The Temptations The Super Bowl XXXII Halftime Show at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium served as a tribute to Motown for its 40th anniversary, and among the label’s signees, Queen Latifah put a subtle hip-hop spin on a Motown classic. She performed her 1988 single “Paper,” which is not only one of her first songs that doesn’t feature her rapping, but is also a cover of Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong’s famous 1968 composition “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” 2001: Aerosmith, *NSYNC, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige and Nelly Nelly’s fir...

Super Bowl Halftime Show 2022 to Feature Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mary J. Blige & Snoop Dogg

The 2021-2022 NFL season is barely underway, but we’re already looking forward to the Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show. Roc Nation and Pepsi have announced a hip-hop mega-collaboration featuring Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Snoop Dogg for the Big Game’s entertainment. The 2022 Super Bowl will take place on February 13th at Inglewood, California’s SoFi Stadium (home to the surging Rams and competitive Chargers). This will mark the first time Los Angeles will play host to the Super Bowl in 30 years, so it makes sense they’d want to celebrate by welcoming local legends like Dre, Lamar, and Snoop. Em and Blige are just icing on the cake. This superstar hip-hop collaboration comes as the third Super Bowl Halftime event put on by Pepsi and Roc Nation since JAY-Z entered into a...

Wale and J. Cole Reunite for New Single “Poke It Out”: Stream

Wale has recruited his friend and frequent collaborator J. Cole for “Poke It Out,” a lighthearted single serving as a teaser for Wale’s upcoming album, Folarin 2, due out on October 22nd. Sharing an electric bass sample with Q-Tip’s 1999 hit “Vivrant Thing,” the new track mixes club-ready production with clever one-liners from the DC rapper and his North Carolina counterpart. After Wale sets the tone with lines like “Ever since I been a star, they don’t love me,” Cole brags about “being the shit since elementary.” Stream the track below. Prior to “Poke It Out,” Cole last teamed with Wale on “My Boy (Freestyle),” off 2018’s Free Lunch. The collab came after Cole seemingly dissed Wale on “False Prophets.” Throughout their extensive careers, the veteran rappers have linked up a numb...

Eminem Opens Mom’s Spaghetti Restaurant In Downtown Detroit

The “Lose Yourself” rapper did, however, pose at the drive-through window with a carton of takeout, and in a room adorned with the famous local lad’s album artwork. A retail store called The Trailer is part of the operation, The Detroit Free Press reports. If you dig spaghetti — and let’s face it, who doesn’t — the Rap God’s joint has something for you. Its menu includes a round of spaghetti (for $9) spaghetti with balls (for $12) or vegan balls ($14), and spaghetti sandwiches ($11). The restaurant owes its name to the opening lyric from Eminem’s Oscar-winning motivational masterclass “Lose Yourself,” in which he raps, “His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy/ There’s vomit on his sweater already, mom’s spaghetti.” The art became a reality as far back...

Eminem Works Takeout Window at Mom’s Spaghetti’s Grand Opening

Eminem’s Mom’s Spaghetti restaurant opened in Detroit on Wednesday, and a familiar face manned the takeout window: Slim Shady himself. With a sweater clean of vomit, the rapper worked the walk-up window at the alley-set eatery when it first began serving customers on September 29th. As Complex reports, Em served the first 10 customers their takeout containers of spaghetti and meatballs (with a vegan option available!), snapping pictures with fans at the counter. According to the Detroit Free Press, the line for the opening day celebration stretched for blocks around Detroit’s Foxtown neighborhood. Some were camping out since the early morning awaiting the 5:00 p.m. opening. While they waited, they were treated to a rendition of “Lose Yourself” (the lyrics of which inspired the restaur...

R. Kelly Guilty Verdict: Black Women See Long-Overdue Justice

Speaking out against sexual assault and violence is fraught for anyone who attempts it. Those who work in the field say the hurdles facing Black women and girls are raised even higher by a society that hypersexualizes them from a young age, stereotyping them as promiscuous and judging their physiques, and in a country with a history of racism and sexism that has long denied their autonomy over their own bodies. “Black women have been in this country for a long time and … our bodies were never ours to begin with,” said Kalimah Johnson, executive director of the SASHA Center in Detroit, which provides services to sexual assault survivors. “No one allows us to be something worthy of protection,” she said. “A human that needs love, and sacredness.” It’s as if, she said, “there’s nothing ...

Following Verdict, Will R. Kelly’s Music be Canceled?

Still, advocates hope the criminal conviction brings a moral reckoning. Tarana Burke, founder of the #MeToo movement, understands how irresistible the music of R. Kelly can be for people who grooved to songs like “Ignition,” but said, “People should just have a second thought about the message that it sends.” “This generation is very clear about who R. Kelly is, right? These young people have come up with the information that this person is a perpetrator, right?” Burke said. “And if we can’t push past our personal likes and desires to dance to a song for the sake of sending a message to these little girls and little boys, at some point I’m just going to draw a line. “I don’t want to support somebody who will cause this kind of harm in my community. I just urge people to think about that,” ...

Kanye West Removes Chris Brown’s Vocals from Donda

Kanye West has begun making Life of Pablo-style updates to Donda, and one early casualty is Chris Brown’s vocals on the album. On Tuesday (September 28th), an updated version of Donda became available on all streaming platforms, primarily featuring mixing and vocal edits. The biggest change involves the complete removal of Brown’s “New Again” feature, which was replaced by the Sunday Service Choir singing the chorus. Fans may remember Brown called out West over his Donda feature shortly after the album was released. In a quickly-deleted Instagram Story, Brown called Kanye a “whole hoe,” and he later shared a verse originally recorded for “New Again.” Advertisement Related Video Other reported changes include the removal of Kanye protégé KayCyy’s vocals from “Keep My Spirit Alive....

Five Burning Questions: Lil Nas X’s ‘Montero’ Debuts at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart

1. No. 2 and 126,000 equivalent album units is obviously an excellent performance for a debut album by just about anyone — but if you’re Lil Nas X, are you smarting a little bit that you’re held at the runner-up spot for your big week, both by Drake’s Certified Lover Boy on the Billboard 200 and The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber’s “Stay” on the Billboard Hot 100? And which do you think has a better shot of eventually climbing to No. 1, Montero or “Industry Baby”?  Rania Aniftos: I’m sure with all the build-up leading to the album release, Lil Nas X was hoping for the top spot on the charts, but he knows better than anyone that any big Hot 100 hit eventually gets dethroned. S...

Shordie Shordie feat. Blxst, “Specific” On “Specific,” East meets West. Baltimore rapper Shordie Shordie tapped LA’s finest Blxst for the first ballad off of his upcoming album Captain Hook 2. The video finds the two back in high school crushing on the same girl. Nashir, “Just Try” “It can’t hurt to try,” and Nashir asserts that beautifully on his mellow new single, “Just Try.” The New Jersey artist is one of a handful of promising young artists under Crxssroads Music/Management.
