Governors Ball kicked off its 10th anniversary celebration on Friday, September 24th. After a year when all music festivals were furloughed due to the pandemic, it was glorious to see New York City’s premiere live music event return — even if it was in a new location at Citi Field. Headlined by Billie Eilish, Day 1 of Gov Ball 2021 saw electric sets from Bartees Strange, Orville Peck, Leon Bridges, Future Islands, Portugal. The Man, Freddie Gibbs, EARTHGANG, and many more. We may not have been able to catch all the incredible music that hit the stages throughout the day, but you can see what we saw by checking out this photo gallery from Consequence’s own Ben Kaye and Perry Froelich. Stay tuned for more daily galleries from the fest, plus catch our complete photo collection and portra...
In the sneak peek of Jeen-Yuhs, a young Kanye is seen impressively rapping the lyrics to his song “Two Words” alongside Mos Def. The track is from West’s 2004 debut album, The College Dropout, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. The trailer was released as part of Netflix’s Tudum fan event on Saturday. Coodie & Chike’s Creative Control company will produce the West docuseries with TIME Studios, the Emmy-winning film and TV arm of TIME, which produced the 2020 documentary John Lewis: Good Trouble about the late Civil Rights hero and Georgia Congressman and the 2018 Aretha Franklin concert film Amazing Grace. Another source told Billboard that Simmons has been filming West since the 1990s in Chicago, and their relationship will serve as the backbone o...
Netflix has announced a new Kanye West documentary called jeen-yuhs, which will chronicle the controversial artist’s 20-year-rise to superstardom. Directed by Coodie Simmons and Chike Ozah, the three-part documentary promises intimate behind-the-scenes footage of Kanye from his early career as a go-to producer, to finally striking out on his own as a MC, to his rise to fame as one of the biggest names in music and pop culture. The first look at jeen-yuhs was revealed during Netflix’s global fan event TUDUM on Saturday. In a clip dating back to 2004, West and Mos Def rap their song, “Two Words,” a cappella. Watch it below. Slim Shady is officially a restauranteur. On September 29th, Eminem is planning on opening up a restaurant that’s aptly named Mom’s Spaghetti, the Detroit News reports. Its title, of course, is a reference to the rapper’s 2002 smash “Lose Yourself,” pulled from the slightly-unappetizing lyrics: “His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy /There’s vomit on his sweater already, mom’s spaghetti.” Yum! Eminem previewed his latest business endeavor in a brief commercial that aired on local television this week. The new diner, set to open in downtown Detroit, will offer noodle- and marinara-focused cuisine such as spaghetti sandwiches and the classic spaghetti and meatballs. Additionally, customers can also shop at the attached retail spot called the Trailer, which will be stocked with Emi...

This year is shaping up to be the year of Princess Nokia. Not long after inking her first major label deal with Arista, co-starring in Kacey Musgraves’ star-crossed film, and making a cameo in HBO’s Gossip Girl reboot, the singer returns today with her raunchy new single, “Boys Are from Mars,” featuring a guest verse from rising rapper Yung Baby Tate. Backed by a beat that feels indebted to 2000s R&B greats, the new track updates the elementary school riddle into an NSFW kiss-off to all the emotionally oblivious, mediocre-in-bed men you’ll inevitably encounter in life. “Can’t make me cum but think you’re a genius,” Princess Nokia sings in an ethereal harmony. “Boys are from Mars, girls are from Venus.” By the time Yung Baby Tate’s verse kicks in, “Boys Are from Mars” thr...
Rap Song of the Week breaks down the essential rap and hip-hop tracks you need to hear every week. Check out the full playlist here. This week, Lil Wayne hops on Run the Jewels’ remix of “ooh la la.” Mixing the cutting edge sensibilities of Run the Jewels with their love for Golden Era hip-hop thanks to contributions from the legendary Greg Nice and DJ Premier, “ooh la la” instantly became a standout entry in their catalog when it was released in 2020. For the remix, El-P and Killer Mike recruited Lil Wayne, another veteran MC who has nothing to prove this deep into his career but continues to go toe-to-toe with the best rappers of any generation. Only getting better with age as he turns 39 years old this September, Wayne has been on a hot streak this year, popping up on tracks alongside r...

That mission statement remained front and center throughout the nearly three-hour ceremony/dinner during which emotions ran high. The Weeknd, co-recipient of The Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award for his philanthropic support of various charities and organizations including COVID relief, Black Lives Matter and MusiCares, recalled the first time he met the industry icon. “He pulled up to one of my club gigs in Las Vegas; he’s one of the reasons why I started making music,” said the emotional singer, to whom Jones presented the award via videotape. “He said he’d wait for me to visit with fans first before we talked. He was teaching me the lesion that nothing is more important than people and giving back. This is the best award I’ve ever gotten in my life, I swear. I won’t take this for g...
Lizzo’s talent for covers is well known, and during a recent visit to the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, she showed love to the biggest K-pop band on the planet. During the appearance, Lizzo tipped her hat to BTS by performing their No. 1 hit, “Butter.” While BTS’s original iteration of “Butter” is a shimmery, synth-pop jam, Lizzo tones it down a notch with a more spare crew of backup musicians and singers. Her version gives the track a retro, funky flair that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Parliament record. Before diving into “Butter,” Lizzo also performed her latest single “Rumors” sans Cardi B. You can listen to both below. Back in early 2020, the rapper/singer/flautist trifecta wowed us with a cover of her pal Harry Styles’ “Adore You” for BBC Radio 1. It came on the heels of Styles’ take...
Seems like RiRi and Rocky are a match made at the Met and in heaven since he doesn’t seem to be the kind of man who turns the 33-year-old billionaire entertainment mogul off, which she described in the new interview as “a man that doesn’t smell good and sits on his ass all day,” she said, adding, “There’s so many opportunities out there. You’ve got to go find one or make one.” The 32-year-old A$AP Mob rapper has had plenty of opportunities to perform at the latest music festivals, from July’s Rolling Loud Miami he co-headlined to last weekend’s Life is Beautiful in Las Vegas to this coming weekend’s Governors Ball in New York, where he’s listed as one of the headliners. Rocky also gushed about feeling “...
Streaming makes up the second-largest category, with 9,000 units from that sector, equal to 11.5 million on-demand plays of the album’s songs. The remaining 2,000 units derive from individual track downloads of the album’s songs. (One unit equals the following levels of consumption: one album sale, 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams for a song on the album.) The album rejoins the top 10 for the first time since the chart dated Nov. 10, 2001, when it ranked at No. 9. Aaliyah peaked at No. 2 for four nonconsecutive weeks that year – its first and second weeks on the chart (Aug. 4 and 11) and again on Sept. 15 and 22, with the latter pair owed to reaction after the singer’s death on Aug. 25 that ...
