Song of the Week breaks down and talks about the song we just can’t get out of our head each week. Find these songs and more on our Spotify Top Songs playlist. For our favorite new songs from emerging artists, check out our Spotify New Sounds playlist. This week, Drake’s Certified Lover Boy brings a wildcard banger. In a welcome reunion with Future and Young Thug, Drake gets weird with “Way 2 Sexy,” a playful romp sampling Right Said Fred’s 1991 classic, “I’m Too Sexy.” Egged on by Hendrix and Thugger, our Certified Lover Boy makes a slight departure from his sad boi vibes for a collaboration sure to ring out at Labor Day weekend cookouts. Future sets the tone with the chorus, which will probably go viral on TikTok. Stating the obvious, Hendrix tells listeners that not only is too sexy for...
Duckwrth has dropped his new SG8* EP. Stream it below on Apple Music or Spotify. As the title implies, SG8* boasts eight tracks, and is a continuation of some of the ideas first explored in his 2020 label debut, SuperGood. While that previous effort was a joyous reaction away from 2010’s trap rap, this new EP finds the positive vibes bumping up against a pandemic. “Now that things are opening up and we’re living in this post pandemic state of mind…no one is touching on the new anxieties,” Duckwrth said in a statement. “The truth of the matter is we shake the dice every time we’re around people. And now I’m contemplating whether I’ve always struggled with anxiety or if the atmosphere change has bred a new thing in me. Deep down I still just want to have a good time witho...
As all parents know, Peppa Pig is an insufferable little swine, devoid of any redeeming qualities except that her nearly constant whining and snorting can buy mom and dad about five minutes of precious silence. But the same personality that makes her such a bully to poor George Pig can also be extended to people who actually deserve it. And when it came time to roast Kanye West, that little porker went HAM. The savage tweet from the Peppa Pig account has now been deleted, the better to keep up the pretense that this porcine oppressor should be allowed anywhere near your children. But screenshots have preserved it for posterity, and it concerns the Pitchfork reviews of two divisive albums: Peppa Pig’s Peppa’s Adventures and Ye’s Donda. You see, Pitchfork gave Peppa’...
After months of hype, Drake has finally unveiled his new album, Certified Lover Boy, via OVO/Republic Records. Certified Lover Boy is the superstar’s first full-length studio set since his 2018 double album Scorpion. It was preceded by his March EP, Scary Hours 2, and last year’s Dark Lane Demo Tapes mixtape. He dropped the Lil Durk-assisted “Laugh Now Cry Later” as an album teaser more than a year ago. While CLB was originally meant to follow closely behind the lead single, it was delayed twice: First, it was pushed to this past January, and then again due to Drake’s recovery from surgery on his ACL. The Certified Lover Boy has arrived. Drake finally dropped his sixth studio album on Friday (Sept. 3) via OVO Sound/Republic Records. After keeping fans waiting nearly a year on the highly anticipated project, Drake delivered an impressive album rollout in the week leading to CLB‘s release. He kicked it off by revealing the album artwork, which features a colorful collage of pregnant mom emojis, and sharing the official release date after cryptically teasing it during ESPN’s SportsCenter. The 6 God later unveiled the A-list featured artists via billboards in their respective hometowns, including 21 Savage, Giveon, Lil Durk, Ty Dolla $ign, Tems, Yebba, Masgeo and many more. Drizzy also used billboards to tease his Instagram-caption-ready l...
Little Simz has just released Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, her highly anticipated new album and fourth studio LP overall. Stream it below via Apple Music and Spotify. Sometimes I Might Be Introvert spans 19 tracks in total, including early singles “Rollin Stone,” the magnificent rallying cry “Woman,” and album opener “Introvert,” which earned Little Simz the coveted title of Song of the Week earlier this spring. The tracklist also boasts “I Love You, I Hate You” as well as “Point and Kill.” This follows Little Simz’s 2019 album GREY Area that more than deserved its spot on our favorite albums of the year list. Since then she tided over fans with the 2020 Drop 6 EP, and as good as that was, the British-Nigerian rapper sounds even better here on Sometimes I Might Be Introvert.&n...
“Astronaut In The Ocean” impacted charts around the globe, hitting No. 6 on the Hot 100, No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs and earning Chartbreaker status. The two creators were presented with trophies earlier in the week at the APRA AMCOS offices. “I went out to celebrate 20 million streams because to me that was a goal and achievement,” explains Masked Wolf in a statement. “It’s crazy what can happen when you never give up and truly believe in yourself. One billion streams later I’m still the same person but am so grateful for this moment.” Tyron Hapi produced and co-wrote the song. Its milestone, he explains, is “an incredible achievement and stepping stone for me. I appreciate everyone who listens and supports. Without my team this also wouldn’t hav...
The whole show “felt like a ceremony of epic proportions that came off as either a dramatic funeral, a symbolistic rebirth, and possibly one of the most unorthodox renewals of vows that over 30,000 people witnessed at the stadium,” is how Billboard’s Mark Braboy saw it all unfold. The release of Donda has been almost as dramatic as the music video. Just hours after its late arrival Sunday morning (Aug. 29) on streaming services, the 44-year-old rapper claimed on social media that the LP was released without his approval by Universal Music Group, the parent company of Def Jam Recordings. Donda, Kanye’s 10th studio album, raked in over 60 million streams in the U.S. during its first 24 hours on Apple Music, a new 2021 record for the streaming platform. Apple Musi...
Injury Reserve are releasing their highly-anticipated sophomore album, By the Time I Get to Phoenix, in just a couple of weeks. The alt hip-hop group has already shared the record’s lead single, “Knees,” and today, they’re following it up with “Superman That” and an accompanying music video. “Superman That” sees Injury Reserve moving in an experimental direction, fueled by crunchy beats and a nearly-indistinguishable time signature. To top it off, Ritchie with a T’s melodic vocals are doused in Auto-Tune, making the track feel almost otherworldly. Its video, directed by Injury Reserve producer Parker Corey, is full of equally disorienting visuals. Check out the “Superman That” clip below. By the Time I Get to Phoenix, the follow-up to Injury Reserve’s 2019 self-titled debut, is due ou...
Rosalía has joined forces with rising Dominican dembow artist Tokischa for a collaborative single called “Linda.” They’ve also shared a steamy music video for the track. While Rosalía is one of the biggest names in Latin music, Tokischa is one of the most controversial. Still, the latter’s rebellious, authentic nature and unique blend of trap and dancehall sounds has drawn plenty of positive attention in the music world. Speaking in a recent interview for an outlet in the Dominican Republic (via a press release), Rosalía said of her collaborator, “Tokischa is an irreverent woman, a woman who speaks frankly and isn’t afraid to make people uncomfortable. Tokischa is a woman who is going to make a big impact just based on the message that she gives and what she represents. She is a woman who ...
Is a Lil Nas X and Kid Cudi collab really on the way? On Wednesday (Sept. 1), the 22-year-old rapper revealed the star-studded track list for his highly anticipated debut album Montero, which will feature collaborations with Megan Thee Stallion, Elton John, Jack Harlow, Doja Cat and Miley Cyrus. When one Twitter user called out the lack of Black male guest artists, LNX responded in his defense on Twitter, “Maybe a lot of them just don’t wanna work with me.” Durand Bernarr, Breland and more Black male artists eagerly flooded his replies to assure him this wasn’t the case, and it looks like Cudder has his back, too. The Man on the Moon rapper reshared Lil Nas X’s explanation and wrote back to him, ̶...
