10 Timeless Political Songs for Election Day

This feature originally ran November 2008 and has since been edited for Election Day 2020. Everyone hates politics. Election Day is among us, though. So, it doesn’t matter if you get nauseous any time you flip by C-SPAN or that you once had an asthma attack during your eighth-grade field trip to Washington, D.C. Truth be told, the country’s future is on the line, and it’s your civil duty to get out there and cast a ballot. As a source of inspiration, we scrambled together a cliché collection of the best political anthems out there. Because, really, sometimes you just need to hear the hits again to feel good about something — it’s sort of like how every sports team relies on the same three or four songs to get everyone in the mood. Lil Wayne’s Girlfriend Seemingly Denies Rumors She Dumped Him After Trump Endorsement

After rapper Lil Wayne endorsed Donald Trump for president, TMZ reported that he’d been dumped by his girlfriend, Denise Bidot. It looked like Weezy F. Baby might have to F. himself for a little while, but now Bidot seems to have quashed those rumors. In a since-deleted tweet, screenshotted for posterity, Bidot responded to the breakup story by writing, “I did NOT! This is absolutely false,” (via Complex). Bidot, a model, recently deleted her Instagram account, and one of her last posts was a meme that read, “Sometimes love just isn’t enough.” That fueled rumors of their breakup, and blogger B. Scott poured gas on the fire by publishing a confirmation from someone alleging to be Bidot’s friend. But yesterday, November 3rd, Bidot herself dumped cold water on the story. At this time, it’s no...

Tekashi 6ix9ine’s Kidnapper Is Sentenced to 24 Years

Engelmayer called Ellison “cruel and vicious” for “slicing open a man’s face” even though the man was not involved in a shooting Ellison was trying to avenge. Prosecutors said in a written court submission that the attack left the man with a scar from his ear to his chin, an injury so gruesome that Ellison’s lawyers succeeded in getting some of the images kept from jurors. Prosecutors said Ellison was a leader of a violent faction of the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods. “I’m not an angel but I’m not a monster,” Ellison told the judge. “I do have faults. I am human.” After his own arrest, Tekashi 6ix9ine — whose legal name is Daniel Hernandez — pleaded guilty and became a cooperator. At Ellison’s trial last year, the rapper testified about his involvement with the gang. He described the kidnapping...

In Honor of the 30th Anniversary of Rap’s First Hot 100 No. 1, A List of Hip-Hop Hot 100 Firsts

OK, so it probably wasn’t the seal-breaking No. 1 most hip-hop fans would’ve chosen: a pop-leaning, suburbs-courting, classic rock-sampling crossover anthem from the artist born Robert Van Winkle, a white MC of controversial credibility. Still, it was a crucial chart first in rap history: the culmination of a number of smaller breakthroughs over the previous decade, and the start of many historic hip-hop No. 1s to come. Here are 15 more of the most important rap firsts in Billboard Hot 100 history: 1. First rap Hot 100 hit: Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” (No. 36, 1/12/80) The first single to introduce hip-hop to the mainstream peaked in the Hot 100’s top 40 at the outset of the 1980s, portending the slowly building crossover influence the genr...

Kanye West Admits Election Defeat, Looks to 2024

Earlier, the rapper exercised his democratic rights. In a video shared online, he cast a vote in Wyoming, where he penned his own name on a 2020 election ballot. “God is so good,” West, face mask on and “I Voted” sticker adorning his blue sweatshirt, tweeted. “Today I am voting for the first time in my life for the President of the United States, and it’s for someone I truly trust…me.” The 43-year-old artist appeared on pre-printed ballots in just 12 states: Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah and Vermont. Running as an independent, he bagged some 50,000 votes, a vast distance from the heavyweights. In the small hours of Wednesday, the election was in the balance with neither...

Lil Pump Joins Donald Trump for Election Eve Rally, Introduced as “Little Pimp”

As Lady Gaga stumped for Joe Biden in Pittsburgh, Donald Trump countered with his own “celebrity” endorser. During a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Monday night, Trump was joined on stage by Lil Pump. The Harvard Dropout rapper came out in support of Trump last week, after apparently learning of Biden’s plan to tax individuals making over $400,000 a year. “Fuck I look like payin’ an extra 33 in tax for Biden, bitch ass n*gga? Fuck Sleepy Joe, n*gga! Trump 2020, bitch,” he yelled in a clip posted to social media. Word apparently got back to the reality show president, who’s always on the lookout for a new attraction for his “COVID-19 Superspreader World Tour”. Of course, neither man bothered to do one iota of research on the other before taking the stage together. Trump introduced Lil P...

Big Boi, Sleepy Brown, and Killer Mike Perform “We the Ones (Remix)” on Fallon: Watch

It was Atlanta night in New York City on Monday as Big Boi and Sleepy Brown brought their new remix of “We the Ones” to The Tonight Show. They were joined by fellow Dungeon Family alums Killer Mike and Big Rube. In its original form, “We the Ones” appeared on the self-titled 2017 EP from production trio Organized Noize, of which Brown is a member. Bigs Boi and Rube were already present, but it took last month’s remix to add Killer Mike of Run the Jewels. The track has always been a protest song, but since it came out Killer Mike has become one of the most notable voices of the resistance. His verse added a new perspective centered around aspiration and faith. After an introduction from Jimmy Fallon, the song opened with Big Rube at a podium labelled with the official “Seal o...

Kanye West Concedes 2020 Presidential Election

The results of the 2020 presidential election are still to be decided, but one thing is for sure: Kanye West will not be residing in the Oval Office come January 20th, 2021. The rapper-turned-presidential candidate formally ended his campaign shortly after midnight on Wednesday. He tweeted simply, “WELP”,  alongside a map of the United States shaded in with the evening’s winners. However, Kanye is seemingly keeping the door open for a 2024 campaign: WELP KANYE 2024 🕊 pic.twitter.com/tJOZcxdArb — ye (@kanyewest) November 4, 2020 Related You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. “¡Yo voté! ¡Vamos America! #Vote #LetsGetLoud #BidenHarris2020,” J. Lo, showing off her “I Voted” sticker in a selfie, tweeted Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 3). Kanye West, who put himself on the presidential ballot this year, acknowledged that he voted for himself. “Today I am voting for the first time in my life for the President of the United States, and it’s for someone I truly trust…me,” he tweeted. “I didn’t vote for a Democrat or a Republican. I voted for character, decency, justice, TRUTH and TRUST in the leader of our nation,” Camila Cabello, who said she voted for Biden, wrote on Instagram. “I voted for a President that believes in goodness, who will protect the morals and values of this country, and not betray them...

Milwaukee Official Apologizes for Promoting Weatherization Assistance Program with “WAP”

From 1976 until just quite recently, there was nothing funny about the Weatherization Assistance Program. But for this year’s National Weatherization Day on October 30th, those initials “WAP” got Ryan Clancy’s juices flowing. The Milwaukee County Supervisor promoted the program on his personal Facebook page with an image of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion. The image contained the words “Weatherization Assistance Program” and the parodic lyrics, “There’s some holes in this house!” That meme, along with a press release describing W.A.P.’s benefits, caused a public backlash. Now, at the bequest of the weatherization staff, Clancy has issued an apology. The news was first reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. With all the grace of Old Media, it described “WAP” as “a song so vivid an...
