Bobby Shmurda will remain in prison until 2021 after a parole board denied his request for early release, according to TMZ. The Brooklyn rapper was arrested in December 2014 on a litany of charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, reckless endangerment, and drug and gun possession. New York City police accused Shmurda of being “the driving force” behind a street gang called GS9, which had been involved in a wave of shootings. Shmurda frequently rapped about drug-dealing, violence, and even murder, which police said were “almost like a real-life document of what they were doing on the street.” In 2016, on the eve of his trial, Shmurda pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree conspiracy and one count of weapons possession, and was sentenced to seven years in prison. Anitta‘s new bilingual song “Me Gusta,” featuring Cardi B and Myke Towers, has topped this week’s new music poll. Music fans voted in a poll published Friday (Sept. 18) on Billboard, choosing the Brazilian star’s latest track as their favorite new music release from the past week. “Me Gusta” brought in 54 percent of the vote this week, beating out new music by Justin Bieber and Chance the Rapper (“Holy”), Sam Smith (“Diamonds”), Keith Urban (The Speed of Now Part 1), and others. Anitta will release her official U.S. debut album, produced by hitmaker Ryan Tedder, later this year. Placing second on this week’s poll was Bieber and Chance’s new collaboration “Holy,” which brought in 38 percent of the vote...
Two years after the release of his excellent sophomore album Care for Me, Chicago rapper Saba has returned with a pair of new songs: “Mrs. Whoever” and “Something in the Water” featuring Denzel Curry. Our former Artist of the Month hasn’t been wholly idle since his last album; as the de facto leader of Pivot Gang, he was instrumental in the 2019 release You Can’t Sit with Us. But with apologies to his immensely talented collaborators, Saba has always stood out for his charisma and the intensity of his musical ideas. Somehow, his voice always sounds slightly different song to song, as he modulates his voice to better suit the beat. That instinct is on display in the contrasting new singles. Saba produced “Mrs. Whoever” himself, but the relaxed backing track is merel...
Busta Rhymes and Anderson .Paak will turn this car around on their banging new driving song “YUUUU”. It’s the latest single from Busta’s forthcoming album Extinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God. As an ode to U-Turns, “YUUUU” is much more metaphorical than literal, though the sparkling production would certainly lend flair to any high-speed swerving in your future. But in a broader sense, “YUUUU” is a stunt track framed as a willingness to change course, retrace, and take care of unfinished business. “Bitch I had to bust a Uuuu!” .Paak sings, his voice high but falling. He adds, “Know I had to finish what I started/ No, it ain’t too late to turn around, is it?” Busta Rhymes takes his high-octane verse in sixth gear, but he also slows down for a memorable bridge: “Now I’m gettin’ back li...
Kanye West has revealed that Eminem will be featured on a Dr. Dre remix of Ye’s 2019 song “Use This Gospel.” Yeezy took to Twitter on Friday (Sept. 18) to show his appreciation Eminem for appearing on the forthcoming track, and noted that it’s currently one of his daughter North West’s favorites from her dad’s music catalog. “@Eminem THANK YOU FOR RAPPING ON THE DR DRE REMIX OF USE THIS GOSPEL I HAVW ALWAYS LOVED AND RESPECTED YOU AND IM HONORED TO HAVE YOU BLESS THIS SONG … ITS ALSO NORTH WEST’S FAVORITE KANYE WEST SONG OF ALL TIME,” West wrote. “Use This Gospel” appeared on Ye’s ninth album, Jesus Is the King, in October 2019. A month after its release, Kanye announced that he was collaborating with Dr. Dre for the a...
Cardi B is squashing the rumors about her divorce from Offset. The “WAP” rapper hopped on Instagram Live on Friday (Sept. 18) to thank her fans for “all the love and prayers” they’ve been sending her. “However, I don’t really need it. I’m okay,” she added. “I wanted to let y’all know I have not shed not one tear.” “Every single time that this guy has been so crazy, so f—ed up and it hits the media, I’m always crying, always sad because I don’t like that type of s—,” Cardi continued. “This time, I wasn’t crying. You want to know why? The reason for my divorce is not because of none of that s— that ever happened before. It’s not because of cheating. I’m se...
19-year-old rapper/producer Baby Keem has dropped a pair of songs, “hooligan” and “sons & critics freestyle”. Both are expected to appear on an upcoming album, which will be released by pgLang, the new media company created this year by Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free. Born Hykeem Carter, this California wunderkind had an almost inexplicably quick rise. The official story, as he explained to Complex in 2018, is that he “sent a pack of beats to the TDE email,” and one of them unexpectedly ended up on Black Panther: The Album. He followed that up with a Beyoncé credit, writing and producing “Nile” with Kendrick Lamar on The Lion King: The Gift. For many people, his mysterious ascension was explained when Lamar’s sister tweeted — and almost immediately deleted — a message to Keem c...
With three days to go before the end of summer, Tyga drops off his summer party banger “Money Mouf,” featuring Saweetie and YG, Friday (Sept. 18) that’ll keep the party going long after the season’s over. He samples “Salt Shaker” by Ying Yang Twins, featuring Lil Jon and The East Side Boyz, which reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 nearly two decades ago in 2004. But now, the King of “Rack City” pays homage to what he started in the first verse (“What’s up, lil’ bi—? I invented racks (Rack city)”) and shakes his stacked pockets for a club-ready anthem that’ll have anyone’s hips moving in seconds. He extends his invitation to the “Tap In” queen, who shouts out her man Quavo&nbs...
Kamaiyah kicked off 2020 with Got It Made, her first project in over three years. Fans thankfully won’t have to nearly wait as long for a follow-up, as the rapper has just dropped off a new mixtape. Titled Oakland Nights, it’s a collaborative effort with fellow Bay Area local Capolow. Spanning 10 tracks, today’s collection finds the two artists proudly repping their favorite coast. Not unlike Kamaiyah’s past releases, Oakland Nights is peppered with bits of West Coast funk flavor, such as on opener “Finer Things” and closing track “So Much Money”. Other songs, meanwhile, are more geared toward the R&B/rap-singer in Kamaiyah and Capolow, including the suave “Digits” and “Undercover”. As Stereogum points out, the release might just be a reference to Kamaiyah’s debut mixtape, A Good ...
It’s been less than a month since Cardi B successfully sent politicians, conservatives, and sexists into a tizzy with her massive Megan Thee Stallion collaboration “WAP”. But already the New York rapper is back with another joint single sure to get people talking again: “Me Gusta” with Brazilian pop singer Anitta and Puerto Rican rapper Myke Towers. “I really love this song,” Cardi B gushed on Twitter earlier this week. “I don’t get on a song the same day I hear it. Like, I gotta listen to it a couple of times. But as soon as I heard the song, at the end of the night, while I was going to sleep, I kept repeating the hook in my head,” she said, adding, “You guys know how I love Spanish music, you guys know how I love Brazilian funk, and I’m just really excited.” Check out “Me Gusta” below v...
