Kelis has much more to say about being sampled on Beyoncé‘s Renaissance album. After venting her anger about what she claimed was Bey and The Neptunes alleged failure to secure her permission to sample the 1999 song “Get Along With You” on the Renaissance track “Energy,” the “Milkshake” star dove deeper into why she feels slighted in a series of videos posted on Thursday night (July 28). Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news “I’m an artist, so I am as Erykah [Badu] said ‘I’m sensitive about my s—,’” Kelis said. “The reality is that my real beef, is not only with Beyoncé, because at the end of the day, she sampled a record, she’s copied me before, so have many other artists, it’s fine, I don’t care about that.” The Neptunes’ Pharrell Williams an...
Beyoncé’s upcoming album Renaissance, out July 29th, has a long list of famous names in its writing credits, but one name missing from the list is Kelis, who isn’t too happy about the omission. The artist says she was sampled on the album without her permission, and is calling out Beyoncé and The Neptunes — who produced the sampled song in question — for “theft.” Beyoncé’s song “Energy” samples Kelis’ 2000 track “Get Along with You,” and while The Neptunes’ Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo are credited on the album, Kelis is not. The artist is quick to concede that Williams and Hugo are the officially credited writers and producers of the original song, thanks to a record deal that essentially prevented her from owning any of her own music. Still, the artist took to Instagram to blast ...

Marking the highly anticipated follow-up to 2016’s Lemonade, Beyoncé previewed Renaissance by sharing the statement, “Creating this album allowed me a place to dream and to find escape during a scary time for the world. It allowed me to feel free and adventurous in a time when little else was moving. My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment. A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom. It was a beautiful journey of exploration. I hope you find joy in this music. I hope it inspires you to release the wiggle. Ha! And to feel as unique, strong, and sexy as you are.” Just hours before the release of Renaissance, Beyoncé confir...

K-dot himself has responded to a TikTok that went viral over the weekend, in which a security guard on the job at the rapper’s Houston show can be seen openly crying to the DAMN. highlight. Jazlyn Guerra — a Brooklyn-based kid journalist who posts interviews to her Instagram @jazzysworldtv — spoke with Kendrick about the video a few days later at Rolling Loud. “At the end of the day, past all the politics, past all the numbers, [what’s most important is] what music makes you feel, you know?” Lamar told her. “To see that — and shoutout to him, by the way, because I see you, bro — I was like, ‘man, I wonder what he’s going through,’” the rapper went on. “At the end of the day, that’s how you want everyone to receive your music,...

“Is Dallas in this shit tonight?” Kendrick Lamar asked a roaring crowd before performing “Purple Hearts” from his new album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. “You know it’s been five years since I seen ya’ll, right? So I maybe a little bit rusty on this stage. I may need a little help. I think I need ya’ll to help me sing this … Let’s get it.” The last time Kendrick Lamar performed in Dallas was July 14th, 2017, when he brought the “DAMN. Tour” to the American Airlines Center. Exactly five years later, Lamar brought “The Big Steppers Tour” (get tickets...

On Fridays, Rap Song of the Week rounds up all the hip-hop tracks you need to hear. Check out the full playlist here. This week, Megan Thee Stallion recruits Future for her new single “Pressurelicious.” Though Megan Thee Stallion counts Future as one of her favorite rappers, the two superstars had somehow never connected on a track until her new single, “Pressurelicious.” Featuring a hypnotic beat from Hitkidd, the hard-hitting trap anthem should heat up strip clubs this summer. In a June interview with Rolling Stone, Meg said Future deserves his flowers for being “unapologetically himself” while dealing with constant online scrutiny “gracefully.” As someone who was put under a microscope long before Tory Lanez allegedly shot her, the Houston rapper can clearly relate to the immense p...

Miami’s Rolling Loud got off to a rocky start on Friday as the evening’s headliner, Kid Cudi, ended his performance early after audience members repeatedly threw items onto the stage. At the same time, Kanye West, who dropped off Rolling Loud’s lineup just days earlier, made a surprise appearance during Lil Durk’s own Friday night set. Kid Cudi joined Rolling Loud’s lineup earlier this week, filling in as a last-minute replacement for his one-time collaborator-turned-rival, West. The feud between the two rappers apparently permeated into the crowd, as audience members repeatedly interrupted Cudi’s set by throwing objects at him and chanting West’s name. As documented by fan-captured footage, Cudi ended his set after 30 minutes and walked off stage. Adding insult to injury, just minutes aft...
