Jussie Smollett has only been out of jail for a couple of weeks, but he’s wasting no time trying to reclaim his character. On Friday, the Empire actor shared a new single called “Thank You God,” a glossy R&B number that references the December court case that found him guilty of staging a hate crime and lying about it to Chicago police. Dedicating the song to “the people who kept it real,” Smollett said he’s donating all profits from “Thank You God” to social justice organizations Rainbow Push Coalition, Secure the Bag Safety, and Illinois Innocence Project. The track’s lyrics certainly don’t shy away from alluding to his 2019 arrest, where he filed a fake police report after orchestrating a racist and homophobic attack against himself. “It’s like they’re hell-bent on not solving ...

Blissed out. Yung Lean and FKA twigs have released their new collaboration, “Bliss,” as well as its accompanying music video. Stream the track below. In the quirky, nostalgic clip, the rapper picks the avant garde pop singer up for a chauffeured joy ride through a suburban town, complete with a white horse, bicycle gang, and a nod to Kelly Rowland’s famous texting via Excel spreadsheet in the music video for “Dilemma,” her 2002 smash hit with Nelly. “Oh, yeah, but I pray to God you’re good for me/ I want your bliss on bliss, a little company,” FKA twigs sings on the chorus before ceding the floor to Yung Lean, who raps, “You don’t know me or the shit I’m in/ Like The Exorcist, I’m making heads spin again/ Flash, flash, flash, flash, flash, flash/ Leandoer in the club, yeah, you find him in...
Every Friday, our new music column Rap Song of the Week breaks down all the new hip-hop tracks you need to hear. Check out the full playlist here. This week, ScHoolboy Q made his grand return with “Soccer Dad.” Since dropping his first two albums in back-to-back years, ScHoolboy Q has slowed down his release pace. The TDE rapper’s last LP, 2019’s CrasH Talk, dropped after a three-year hiatus, and prior to Tuesday night, he hadn’t released any solo material since then. With the arrival of the triumphant “Soccer Dad,” however, it looks like a new project could be on the way. Fans of ScHoolboy Q are well-acquainted with his life as a soccer dad, having seen videos on the LA rapper’s Instagram Stories of him cheering from the sidelines while also bragging about his daughter’s accomplishments. ...
Breakout Atlanta rapper Latto just earned her first Top 5 hit with “Big Energy” earlier this week, and on Thursday night, she stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to play the song as part of a medley with “Sunshine” (sans guest stars Lil Wayne and Childish Gambino). Starting out with her self-described hood gospel “Sunshine,” Latto began the performance while seated to sing the chorus before getting up to rap her verse. After shedding her outside yellow gown, Latto brought out a pair of backup dancers to run through “Big Energy.” For most of the song, Latto just gyrated at the waist, but she picked up the pace toward the end and broke out some choreographed dance moves. Watch the replay below. First released in September, “Big Energy” — which shares the same sample as Mariah C...
Interview Magazine was founded by Andy Warhol and usually publishes — you guessed it — interviews. But what happens when a famous artist would rather not sit for someone else’s questions? On April 7th, Donald Glover provided an answer of sorts when the magazine published him interviewing himself. “Yeah, so first question, why’d you want to do this?” he writes, before responding, “I guess I don’t love interviews and I asked myself, ‘Why don’t you like interviews?’ And I think part of it is that the questions are usually the same. This way I can get questions I usually don’t get asked.” He offers project updates, bizarre opinions, reflections on his own work, and more. The results are occasionally illuminating and often very strange. Glover does indeed ask himself questions that few oth...
