When We Were Young Festival Makes Nostalgic Debut with Paramore, My Chemical Romance and More: Photo Gallery

After an unfortunately-canceled first day, When We Were Young’s inaugural festival finally kicked off this past Sunday (October 23rd) in Las Vegas, Nevada. Featuring a much-lauded, all-star lineup of emo, pop-punk, and indie rock, the festival overcame high expectations and extreme weather to deliver a day’s worth of nostalgic, angsty fun. Check out photos of the day below, featuring shots of Jimmy Eat World, Avril Lavigne, Paramore, My Chemical Romance, and more. From its announcement, When We Were Young was both hotly anticipated and heavily scrutinized. Skeptics pointed towards the relatively large size of the lineup for a single-day festival, predicting artist cancelations, general chaos, and conditions akin to Fyre Festival. While it might have seemed like the detractors wer...

Sleater-Kinney Unveil Star-Studded Dig Me In: A Dig Me Out Covers Album: Stream

Sleater-Kinney’s seminal 1997 album Dig Me Out passed its 25th anniversary this year, and now, the band has celebrated the record by unveiling Dig Me In: A Dig Me Out Covers Album. Listen to the project below. As Sleater-Kinney explained in a statement, “The artists who appear on Dig Me In have not so much covered the 13 original songs, but reinterpreted and reimagined them. Through added layers or the subtraction of guitars and drums, they provide a new way into the songs. Fresh rage, joy, pain, reclamation, slyness, and longing. Other interpretations slow down or stretch out the songs, trading urgency for contemplation, weariness or even a hint of ease.” Among the artists featured on Dig Me In are frequent Sleater-Kinney collaborator St. Vincent, clear Sleater-Kinney prote...

Arctic Monkeys Return With New Album The Car: Stream

Get your 2014 Tumblr flannels — or, rather, your 1970s hot pants — ready, because Arctic Monkeys have unveiled their new album The Car.  In his review of the album, Paolo Ragusa says that The Car “is sonically aligned with the slow-burning psych pop of 2018’s Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, the band farther away than ever from the tense post-punk or bluesy garage rock that characterized much of their output pre-2018. Orchestral flourishes, though not overwhelmingly frequent, give many of The Car’s songs a classic feel, while Turner’s vocal persona evokes a midlife crisis David Bowie.” Arctic Monkeys previewed The Car with the singles “There’d Better Be a Mirrorball” (which we named Song of the Week) and “Body Paint” (which they performed on Fallon).  Advertise...

Blondshell Offers Dramatic Devotion on New Single “Cartoon Earthquake”: Stream

We’re keeping our eyes and ears locked on Blondshell, the indie rock project of New York-bred, Los Angeles-based musician Sabrina Teitelbaum. She’s only officially released a handful of singles so far, but she adds another promising one today with “Cartoon Earthquake,” as part of Spotify’s Fresh Finds developing artists program. Sonically, Blondshell can be categorized as angry girl music of the indie rock persuasion, layering the bleeding hearts of ’70 singer-songwriters over fuzzy, sweeping guitars reminiscent of the ’90s. Lyrically,  Teitelbaum specifically has a knack for writing about the nuances of love. On “Cartoon Earthquake,” Teitelbaum cheekily ponders the extent to which her partner would put their lives on the line to keep their relationship intact: “If a rock hit the...

Beck Pulls Out of Arcade Fire’s North American Tour

Beck has dropped off Arcade Fire’s North American tour. The decision was first announced in emails sent to ticket holders, and Beck’s representatives have since confirmed his withdrawal to Consequence. Messages to ticket holders note that veteran Haitian roots band Boukman Eksperyans will be replacing Beck. The emails do not mention refunds, and they do not seem to be available. In an August 27th Pitchfork report, four people accused frontman Win Butler of sexual misconduct. Butler responded, saying, “While these relationships were all consensual, I am very sorry to anyone who I have hurt with my behavior.” Advertisement Related Video Feist subsequently withdrew from the European leg of Arcade Fire’s European tour in early September, citing the allegations and sayi...

Black Belt Eagle Scout Returns with New Single “Don’t Give Up”: Stream

It’s been three long years since we’ve heard from Swinomish, Washington’s Black Belt Eagle Scout, but today, the indie rock project of Katherine Paul returns with the new single “Don’t Give Up.” “Don’t Give Up” is a song of persistence that flits seamlessly between steady moments of calm and roaring cacophonies of shoegaze-inspired guitars. “Slow, important love/ It keeps me alive,” Paul sings in the opening lines. “You wanted a second chance at life/ Well, you’re alive.” The song’s title isn’t quite a pep talk, but a reflection of personal growth: “I don’t give up anymore,” she repeats in the chorus. “Spending time with the land and on the water are ways that strengthen my connection to my ancestors and to my culture,” Paul says of the inspiration behind the track. “It helps heal my spiri...

The 1975’s 10 Best Songs

There are British pop rock bands, there are British pop rock bands with charismatic frontmen, and then there’s The 1975. From their inception in the late 2000s, the quartet — comprised of vocalist and songwriter Matty Healy, drummer and producer George Daniel, bassist Ross MacDonald, and guitarist Adam Hahn — have spanned from scrappy funk to post-hardcore, hi-fi pop songs to paranoid New Wave, with songs that can be painfully revealing amidst songs that are jam-packed with jokes and absurdist commentary. Their 2013 self-titled debut was wildly popular (especially in the Tumblr Era), but the new wave pastiche and occasionally indulgent aura of Matty Healy led to a few detractors — this writer included. At the time, it was hard to understand what was so special about this band, what allowed...

Local Natives Share Sleek New Single “Just Before the Morning”: Stream

Local Natives are continuing to keep themselves busy between albums, and today, they’ve shared a new single called “Just Before the Morning.” While “Just Before the Morning” teeters more towards the pop end of the scale for the indie rock veterans, it still feels quintessentially Local Natives: Taylor Rice’s lead vocals are gorgeous as ever, and there’s no shortage of their distinct sweeping harmonies. With its sleek production, “Just Before the Morning” evokes the effortless cool of the band’s Los Angeles home base, recalling the heavy haze of a peculiarly warm autumn night. “‘Just Before the Morning’ came from a burst of creativity after we finally reconnected in the studio,” the band explains in a press release. “The song explores the cyclical nature of life and the many ways in which w...

Weyes Blood Drives Through Her Feelings on New Song “Grapevine”: Stream

As Weyes Blood, Natalie Mering hopes that a nice long drive will sort her feelings on the new song, “Grapevine.” “Grapevine” takes its title from a stretch of Interstate 5 with the same name in Southern California. Over pensive acoustic guitars, she sings, “Six hours on the grapevine/ And I feel kidnapped this time/ ‘Cause my baby thinks/ He always believes/ That he’s always right/ But I still think of him at night.” During the second verse, her “car broke down/ In an old ghost town/ Right around where they got James Dean,” and by the song’s conclusion, she comes to the realization that, “Now we’re just two cars passing by.” Advertisement Related Video “Technology is harvesting our attention away from each other,” Mering wrote in a statement. “We all have a ‘G...
