The White Stripes shared a previously unreleased video of the band’s performance of “Seven Nation Army” from their legendary 2007 Bonnaroo set. The 90-minute-plus set closed out the festival’s Which Stage, making it one of Bonnaroo’s last sets for that year. Jack White and Meg White played 23 songs that night, with covers including Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” Burt Bacharach’s “I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself” and songs from Blind Willie Johnson and Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band. As for their own tunes, the set included versions of “Icky Thump,” “Hotel Yorba,” “Ball and Biscuit” and “Black Math.” In 2020, Bonnaroo did “Virtual Roo-ality,” a free three-day livestream that featured some of the band’s 2007 set. Check out the pair’s performance below. [embedded con...
Jack White has been laying low for the better part of the past year, but his Third Man Records is dusting off a classic set for its latest Vault release. The Detroit native’s 2014 show at the city’s Masonic Temple has long been one of his most revered. White performed 38 songs over the course of three-and-a-half hours that included wide-ranging covers of Beck’s “Devil’s Haircut” to Hank Williams’ “Ramblin Man.” The collection will be released on four 180-gram colored vinyl LPs, with a slipcase cover with custom printed photo inner sleeves and will include shots from the night by official tour photographer David Swanson. To celebrate the release of The White Stripes Greatest Hits, the band shared live performance videos of “Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground” and “My Doorbell,” taken from a 2005 VH1 Sessions taping. Meg and Jack White played Sessions in support of Get Behind Me Satan. The 26-song The White Stripes Greatest Hits is the group’s first-ever official anthology, and features studio versions of the two live tunes released today, plus hits including “Seven Nation Army,” “Fell In Love With A Girl” and “Apple Blossom.” A video for “Let’s Shake Hands,” the first song the duo wrote, came out last week, and in mid-November, an animated video for “Apple Blossom” was shared by the band. SPIN recently spoke with White Stripes archivist and Third Man Records co-founder Ben Blackwell about the ...
On the same day that they dropped their first greatest hits collection, the White Stripes shared a new animated video for “Let’s Shake Hands.” “Let’s Shake Hands” is the first song Meg and Jack White recorded in their living room and originally released as a 7-inch single in 1998. The clip for the new video is directed by Wartella (Cartoon Network’s Mad), who has done other recent videos for The White Stripes. Today’s premiere follows the recent arrival of the Wartella-directed animated video for “Apple Blossom” as well as a never-before-seen live performance video of “Ball and Biscuit” from the White Stripes’ Oct. 22, 2003 show at Tokyo, Japan’s Shibuya-AX. We recently spoke with the White Stripes archivist/Third Man Records co-founder (and White’s nephew) Ben Blackwell, who gave us ...
If anyone knows the White Stripes, it’s Ben Blackwell. The Third Man Records co-owner/co-founder, and proclaimed lover of all things Archer Record Pressing, has been with Jack [who is also his uncle] and Meg White from their humble beginnings in Detroit in 1997 to international stardom to their demise in 2011. Blackwell still runs Third Man Records, which he co-founded with Jack White, and continues to preserve the White Stripes’ legacy, as cemented on their first greatest hits collection that’s out on Friday, Dec. 4. Blackwell, who remains the band’s official archivist, gave us the stories behind his favorite songs on the album, most of which you probably don’t know. Add “good deed-doer” to Jack White’s numerous list of accomplishments after The White Stripes icon bought a Scottish street performer a new, $4,000 Fender Stratocaster after the busker’s guitar was vandalized by a drunk passer-by on Oct. 20. The Edinburgh-based busker, Matt Grant, who called himself a “Live loop guitarist and street musician.” started a GoFundMe account to replace his acoustic. He posted a video on Instagram that said “Can’t believe this happened. My livelihood.” Word of the incident and the fundraiser reached White, who asked his manager to reach out to Grant. The young musician recounted the ‘incredible” chain of events on his Instagram page. The page had raised about £4,000 — more than $5,000 US dollars — before White stepped in with the generous gesture. Gr...
Jack White, who earlier in the day shared that he’d be playing a guitar designed by Eddie Van Halen, performed a pair of popular songs from his catalog on Saturday Night Live. With a White Stripes greatest hits collection on the way, White performed a stomping version of “Ball and Biscuit” that was interspliced with Beyonce’s “Don’t Hurt Yourself” and Blind Willie Johnson’s “Jesus Is Coming Soon,” a song about the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. White was a last-minute addition to the SNL itinerary, replacing Morgan Wallen. The rising country star was kicked off the show for violating COVID-19 protocol after footage surfaced of him partying, unmasked, at a University of Alabama football game last weekend. He was joined by bassist Dominic Davis and Daru Jones on drums. “My actions...
Jack White may not have much time to prepare for his Saturday Night Live performance tonight, but he found a touching way to honor Eddie Van Halen nonetheless. On the eve of his last-minute performance, White shared a post on social media revealing that he’ll be playing a guitar designed by the late legend. “i thought it could be a nice gesture for me to use this blue eddie van halen model guitar for one of the songs tonight on SNL,” White wrote alongside a few photos of the instrument. “the guitar was designed by eddie (with a few customizations i had added). eddie was very kind to me and saw to it that this guitar was made for me to my specs.” The tribute begins and ends with the guitar, though, so don’t expect a Van Halen cover. “i wont [sic] even insult the man’s talent by tr...
The White Stripes haven’t been a band for nearly a decade, which means that a greatest-hits set is long overdue…and now finally its way. Simply titled The White Stripes Greatest Hits, the collection will be released on Dec. 4 through Jack White’s Third Man Records and Columbia. The 26-song set will feature 26 previously released songs that span’s the group’s decade-and-a-half career. A deluxe edition of the set (that includes a variant color vinyl) will be released as the latest Third Man Vault package and will include a bonus third vinyl of largely overlooked, previously scattered B-sides. That collection will also feature three Rob Jones silk-screen prints and a White Stripes-themed set of magnetic poetry. From that set, the group has released a ripping live version o...

Just one cover of Richard Hell and the Voidoids’ classic “Blank Generation” is enough to make any punk fan go wild. Well, on Friday (May 29), the Raconteurs gave us two. The live and studio versions of Jack White and company’s jab at the 1977 track decorated the Detroit band’s first Spotify-exclusive live EP. Their latest project, recorded at Jimi Hendrix’s legendary Electric Lady Studios in New York City, features nine tracks from the rockers, most of which serve as fan favorites. Original Voidoids guitarist Ivan Julian joined the band for the Hell cover. “I’ve always loved that guitar part and never really sat down and exactly figured out what he’s doing,” Jack White said in a statement. “How amazing for Ivan to show up and show us how to do it.” The EP also includes performances of...
After less than a year since announcing their last live release, the Raconteurs will return this Friday (May 29) with Live at Electric Lady, a Spotify-exclusive EP paired with an hour-long documentary of the same name. The project sees the band jamming at the venerable Electric Lady Studios in New York City. The studio has been a musical home to acts like the Clash, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, U2, Frank Ocean, Run the Jewels and more, with nearly 50 years of music history under its belt. The group’s last studio albu...
