The 50 Best Songs of the Year 2000

The year 2000 looms large in pop culture history: the Y2k non-scare, the Seinfeld “Newmannium” episode, the “In the Year 2000″ sketch from Conan O’Brien’s original late-night show, the Hulu series PEN15. And just like, say, the grunge-defined 1991, the year immediately conjures specific sounds: gleaming teen-pop, earnest radio rock, the Neptunes and Timbaland. There’s never a bad time to revisit this music. But in the middle of a pandemic, with America on the verge of collapse, it feels extra comforting — a blast of nostalgia for a time when you could safely exit your home, visit your local mall’s Sam Goody and buy Mystikal’s “Shake Ya Ass” CD single. For this list, our only criteria was that the songs appear on albums or soundtracks released in 2000. Here we go. 50. Papa Roach, “Last Reso...

You Care: Beyoncé & Jay-Z Spotted Out For Dinner With Solange In NYC

Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty Apparently, Beyoncé and Jay-Z do the same things most couples do, like go out with friends and fam. The Hip-Hop power couple was spotted out having dinner in New York City, and Solange was there, too. Page Six has the stalker-like details. Beyoncé and Jay-Z were spotted having a late-night dinner Saturday with Bey’s sister, Solange, and two friends at Scarpetta in NoMad. A spy told us, “They were immediately taken to a private area outside. Jay-Z was seen browsing the wine menu and landed on a nice bottle of red. Beyoncé wore a tan long jacket, orange hat and snakeskin heels, and made sure to keep her face mask on until her food arrived.” They had fried chicken, lots of pasta and cheesecake for dessert. Can it really be that private if it was outside and clearly...

Jack Dorsey Goes Yachting With The Carters, Salty Twitter Still Not Over “Entrepreneur”

Source: Victor Boyko / Getty Want to feel broke this beautiful day?  Then come gaze at Page Six’s paparazzi photos of Jack Dorsey summering with The Carters during their family vacation.   Last week, Jay-Z and Beyoncé chartered a small yacht to ride through the “luxe waterways” of The Hamptons. Onboard to join the couple was Dorsey, who we imagined earned imaginary stripes to share air with unicorn twins Rumi and Sir.  We rarely see their offsprings in the first place, so that says a lot.  It’s not clear if this trip was for business or pleasure, but the photos suggest that it was at least a bit of both happening– one of the giveaways was catching Roc Nation executive Jay Brown lounging with the crew.  Plot twist: Jay Z and Jack are working to incorporate Tida...

The 25 Best Soundtrack Albums of the 1990s

In the 1980s, music and film collided for cross-promotional blockbusters both transcendent (Purple Rain) and transcendently cheesy (Footloose). In the ‘90s, soundtracks continued to sell in the millions, capturing cultural moments like the Seattle grunge of Singles or the Britpop and electronica of Trainspotting. Auteurs like Quentin Tarantino and Wes Anderson reached deep into their record collections to set the mood while movies like Above the Rim and Menace II Society pioneered the concept of soundtracks as hip-hop mixtapes. A great soundtrack can propel an unsuccessful single, like Seal’s “Kiss From A Rose,” to the top of the charts, or revive a decades-old hit, like Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” It can also push a cult singer-songwriter like Elliott Smith or Aimee Mann to an Oscar perf...

I Walk Like ,Talk Like Money Money Money: JAY-Z & Jack Dorsey Seen Walking In The Hamptons

Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty Jay-Z has been coined as Hip-Hop’s first billionaire and that status is very much solidified, even as he continues to drop verses here and there. In a recent photo, Hov was seen walking alongside Twitter’s Jack Dorsey in the Hamptons although the nature of the gathering is unknown. TMZ and the Daily Mail obtained snaps from the paparazzi that showed the rapper born Shawn Carter alongside Dorsey along with a small gathering of friends. It clearly wasn’t a typical business meetup as all the men in tow were dressed down to casual fits and seemingly engaged in normal banter. Dorsey and Jay-Z are somewhat connected after the Square founder and CEO donated millions to Meek Mill and Hov’s Reform Alliance initiative this past spring. Hov also name-dropped Dorsey on the ...

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz For those that didn’t know, JAY-Z and DMX didn’t really see eye to with one another despite always putting out great records together, but that didn’t stop Jigga from a tremendous solid for Dark Man X. Speaking with The Breakfast Club ahead of the premiere of Ruff Ryder’s Chronicles on BET documentary, founders of the iconic Hip-Hop stable Dee, Wah, and Chivon Dean broke down why the two Hip-Hop legends had beef in the first place. “What had happened was Jay-Z called X and told him, ‘The inmates have took over the prison.’ And when your man Jay-Z got in position, X felt like he didn’t honor him and hold weight like he was supposed to.” They go on to further explain that it was the massive egos of ...
