Every Tim Burton Movie Ranked from Worst to Best

Welcome to Dissected, where we disassemble a band’s catalog, a director’s filmography, or some other critical pop-culture collection in the abstract. It’s exact science by way of a few beers. The time, we enter the strange, dark, and still sometimes charming world of Tim Burton. This article was originally published in 2019 and has been updated. In 1986, after years of work in animation, various other below-the-line contributions, and a pair of short films by his own hand, Tim Burton stormed onto the international filmmaking stage with his ’80s feature run of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, and Batman. In just a few years, Burton made himself a household name, and one of the most unique and sought-after directorial voices in a Hollywood beginning to find itself overwhe...

Amber Heard Files to Appeal Verdict in Johnny Depp Defamation Case

Amber Heard has filed to appeal the verdict in the defamation case brought by her ex-husband Johnny Depp, as The Daily Mail was first to report. “We believe the court made errors that prevented a just and fair verdict consistent with the First Amendment,” a spokesperson told TMZ. “We are therefore appealing the verdict. While we realize today’s filing will ignite the Twitter bonfires, there are steps we need to take to ensure both fairness and justice.” Depp’s lead attorney, Ben Chew, responded that the motion is “What we expected, just longer, no more substantive.” Advertisement Related Video A Virginia jury tried to award Depp $15 million — $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages — though since Virginia law caps punitive damages at $350,...

Of course, the project rears its head in the wake of the public spectacle that was Depp’s high-profile defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard, but it isn’t...

Judge Rejects Amber Heard’s Claim of Jury Fraud in Johnny Depp Defamation Trial

A judge has rejected Amber Heard’s motion for a new trial, ruling that a mix-up between a 52-year-old man and his 77-year-old father did not constitute jury fraud. The jury awarded Johnny Depp $10.35 million in his defamation lawsuit, and Heard has not yet filed an appeal, possibly because Judge Penny Azcarate ordered her to pay an $8.3 million bond before any appeal could go forward. Instead, she’s focused her legal efforts on this father and son. While the identities of the two men have been redacted, they live together, and publicly available information suggests that they also share a name, although it’s unknown if one is a “Jr.” or “II.” But the 77-year-old was summoned for jury duty, and instead the 52-year-old showed up, ultimately getting enrolled on the jury. Heard’s leg...

Billie Eilish Slams Internet for Depp v. Heard Obsession: “Who Fucking Gives a Fuck?”

Billie Eilish is nothing if not outspoken regarding current events, and her new song “TV” kills two birds with one stone by expressing disgust about both the Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard trial and the US Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. In a new interview discussing the track, the artist questioned the Internet’s strange prioritization of one case over the other, asking, “Women are losing rights for their bodies, so why are we talking about celebrities’ divorce trials?” Eilish debuted “TV” at a Manchester show earlier this month, shortly after the court’s plans to overturn Roe were leaked. In the song, she sings the line, “The internet’s gone wild watching movie stars on trial/ While they’re overturning Roe v. Wade.” The young pop star explained the origins of the track in an int...

Jeff Beck, Johnny Depp Unveil Beach Boys Cover Ahead of New LP

Ahead of the July 15 release of their collaborative album 18, Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp have unveiled their instrumental cover of The Beach Boys’ “Caroline, No” as well as a live music video. Depp has been palling around with Beck in Europe since the conclusion of his defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard earlier this month. [embedded content][embedded content] Beck’s affinity for The Beach Boys stretches back to 1966’s Pet Sounds, which he says “was great support for me in horrible times. I’d left the Yardbirds and regretted it because I had nothing. I was back living with my mum and dad. I thought, right, I’m not going sit around doing nothing. So, I bought a stereo and Pet Sounds, and I was just riveted to the spot. I remember it was a great big cure from losing the Yardbirds, hav...

The Hollywood Vampires (Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, Joe Perry) Reunite and Announce Tour

Whether you like Johnny Depp or long to drive a stake through his heart, you’re probably going to be seeing a lot more of him following his legal victory in a defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard. In the latest example, Depp is resurrecting The Hollywood Vampires, his supergroup with Alice Cooper, Joe Perry, and Tommy Henriksen, for a short 2023 European tour. The band was last active in 2019 when they released their sophomore album, Rise. Now, as the group wrote in an Instagram post, “The Hollywood Vampires are BACK!” The six-date trek includes five stops in Germany and one in Luxembourg, all between June 20th and 30th of next year. The Vamps expects this to be more of the beginning than the end; the announcement told fans to, “Keep an eye out for more to come…” Advertisem...

Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck Share Cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Venus in Furs”: Stream

Like it or not, Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck have a collaborative album on the way, and now, they’ve dropped the latest preview, a cover of “Venus in Furs” by The Velvet Underground. Whereas the original is notable for John Cale’s electric viola and Moe Tucker’s bass drum and tambourine shake backbeat, Depp and Beck’s take is more straightforward and sludges forward with fuzzed-out guitar and bleary vocals. Listen to it below. In addition to their Velvet Underground cover, Depp and Beck’s upcoming album, 18, will feature them taking on songs by The Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, and The Everly Brothers. It will also contain two Depp originals, including the previously released “This Is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr.” Advertisement Related Video “I haven’t had another creative partner like him fo...

Johnny Depp’s Lawyers: “Social Media Played No Role” in Swaying Jury

Ben Chew and Camille Vasquez, two of the lawyers who represented Johnny Depp in his recent highly-publicized trial, say “social media played no role whatsoever” in the jury’s decision to find Amber Heard guilty of defamation against her ex-husband. The attorneys appeared on both Good Morning America and The Today Show Wednesday morning to discuss the trial, which ended last week with both Depp and Heard receiving compensatory damages — though Depp’s sum was over $8 million more than Heard’s. “Social media played no role whatsoever [in the jury’s verdict],” Chew told GMA’s George Stephanopoulos. “This was a decision made by the jury on the evidence presented by both sides, and as Camille said [earlier in the interview], it was overwhelmingly in Mr. Depp’s favor.” Depp and Heard’s ...

Court Stenographer for Johnny Depp and Amber Heard Trial Saw “Jurors Dozing Off”

While the trial for Johnny Depp’s $50 million defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard seemed to completely consume the American pop culture conversation during its six-week proceedings, the case was not compelling enough to hold the attention of the actual jurors deliberating it. In an interview with Law & Crime Network, which livestreamed the entire trial, the court-appointed stenographer Judy Bellinger revealed what the multi-camera set-up evidently did not capture: “There were a few jurors dozing off… It was tough,” she said. “There was a lot of video deposition and they’d just sit there and all of a sudden I’d see their heads drop.” Bellinger began by her sharing her perspective on the jury selection process before acknowledging potential, arguably more deserving, a...

The day after Johnny Depp‘s high-profile defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard ended, guitarist Jeff Beck revealed the release date for an album he created with the Pirates of the Caribbean actor. “I met this guy five years ago and we’ve never stopped laughing since,” Beck told a UK audience in Gateshead Thursday night. “We actually made an album. I don’t know how it happened. It will be out in July.” While Depp didn’t mention anything about the verdict, which granted him over $10 million in damages. Beck said, “what a result.” [embedded content][embedded content] While jury deliberations were underway in Fairfax, Virginia over the weekend, Depp surprised UK audiences when he joined Beck onstage for covers of Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing” and Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Goin’ On.” Alon...

What the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard Verdict Means for Depp’s Future Career

It seems like an inevitability, at this point: Johnny Depp will be back on the big screen again soon. Not that he’s felt exactly absent from our screens over the last several months, as his defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard raged not just in a Virginia courtroom but across the entire Internet. The resulting decision was not a clear-cut victory for either side, but with Depp being awarded $10 million in compensatory damages in comparison to Heard being awarded $2 million, the jury made it clear who they thought was more in the wrong here. However, while Depp fans are treating yesterday’s verdict as a clear-cut victory for the star, the question becomes: What happens next, at least in terms of Depp’s career — the very thing he accused Heard of damaging?
